The Simpsons vs. Family Guy
uber.com — Pound for Pound, clip for clip, character-driven comparison of the Simpsons and the Griffins. I don't know if I totally agree with the judges but the clips are entertaining and it's way more fun than the 'who copied who' threads from the purists.

- radicaldementia, on 10/12/2007, -6/+176agreed. They try to compare characters based on their place in the family, but their roles in the show are very different. Yeah, Maggie and Stewie are both babies, but Stewie is much more of a main character than Maggie. The opposite is true with Bart and Chris, nobody cares about Chris (and I think almost everything he says is dumb), but Bart is one of the lead characters. Meg is there just to get made fun of, while Lisa is supposed to be the braniac of the family. And yeah, Homer and Peter are both dumb, but at least Homer can be funny without saying "wow this is just like that time when....(random cut scene)" every 30 seconds.
Family Guy is funny, but The Simpsons is pretty much an American classic. - jimmiss, on 10/12/2007, -14/+129Without the simpsons, there would be NO family guy. NO southpark. NO adult cartoons in general. They were the precursor to it all.
- Jo9100, on 10/12/2007, -27/+17i don't give a ***** whos copying who, i just want the funniest
- audiowizard, on 10/12/2007, -38/+3I'm getting old....at 27 I don't even remember what the hell ppl like in either of these shows...
- albrad84, on 10/12/2007, -17/+34The early to mid Simpsons years absolutely destroy even Family Guy's best years, but during the time in which they both have been on the air (the last 5 years or so), Family Guy has been much better, due mostly to the terrible writing that has plagued the Simpsons in their later years.
- Calypsoaf, on 10/12/2007, -14/+6I think we all know who the REAL winner here is;
http://www.manatees.net/manatee-picture.jpg - zjungleist, on 10/12/2007, -18/+9until Bart gets his coinpurse shaved there can be no fair comparison
- CaliLove09, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0You're out of your mind. You idiot.
- sfpfc, on 10/12/2007, -13/+3old simpsons > South park > old (before cancelled) family guy TIE with King of the Hill > new family guy > most recent simpsons episodes
its just family guy does these stupid jokes that go no where for like 5 minutes that are not funny i.e. when stewie thought will farrell was stupid caught a plane and punched him, that so called joke was the terrible (and thats just one example)
plus no question that it is a rip off (peter homer 4 friends, drink one type of beer, same family, homer=peter, marge=louis - grookie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7if you don't care who copied who, but rather who is the funniest, are you saying its the delivery, not the joke?
- johnnybluejeans, on 10/12/2007, -12/+36@jimmiss
"Without the simpsons, there would be NO family guy. NO southpark. NO adult cartoons in general. They were the precursor to it all."
Actually, the Flintstones was a precursor to it all... - sfpfc, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15sorry the timer ran out before i could edit it but family guy will never ever match the success of the simpsons
the simpsons is probably one of the few shows that you can watch reruns on a weekday everyday and not get bored of it. I watch it 5:00/5:30 if i have the time and i still laugh at the jokes.
i just hate family guy because i think they believe they they push the limits with their show but they don't come close to south park. I have no doubt that if there was no simpsons there would be no family guy because watching family guy is like watching a crappy rerun of the simpsons while catching every time they steal a joke from em. in addition, the critic was a great show too (if it was released a few years ago during fox animation domination sunday i am sure it would still be making new shows) I can just remember the episode of the simpsons when the critic's jay sherman was on the show.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W27U6T54u_E
hell, even the simpsons don't overdo the stupid jokes that last forever, and when the simpsons do it, it is actually funny. - OsiVert, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10I don't know why a lot people try to jump on one side. Heck, I like Simpsons/Family Guy/South Park. You find one funnier than the other depending on what mood you're in. Family Guy is slapstick comedy; South Park is very clever and Simpsons can play both sides. They all have their place.
- themastersb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Like they said on SouthPark: The Simpsons has already done everything possible so it's practically impossible to not copy it in some small way.
- sigsegfalt, on 10/12/2007, -8/+28I could live without ever seeing another installment of the Peter/Chicken fight sequence.
- Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Both shows are sort of stale. It just took Simpsons 8 years to be and Family Guy 4 years.
Digg me down if you want, but both shows should wrap it up before they get canceled. - jimmiss, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3@johnnybluejeans
"Actually, the Flintstones was a precursor to it all..."
The flintstones were for kids. - racekarl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17@jimmiss:
You're showing your (lack of) age. The Flintstones originally aired in prime-time and was intended for adult audiences, exactly like the Simpsons, Family Guy et al. that followed them. - Emanji, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5This is not even close. Comparing the Simpson to Family Guy is like comparing Michael Jordan to Lebron James, yeah Lebron can run like the wind right now, but MJ got 6 rings baby. I mean are you kidding me? SOUTH PARK freaking made an episode called "The Simpsons already did it". I mean the Simpson is a series that defines American TV, its one of the top 10 greatest show of ALL TIME.
- audiowizard, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2You guys are forgetting 'Beavis n' Butthead' on your list of cartoons in this vein....
- daborg, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2You can't really call 56-55 a win. That's like Pepsi saying that they're better than Coca-Cola because 52% picked them in a blind test. It basically just shows that they're JUST AS GOOD.
- thefaithful, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2So the family guy mom is better because she's sluttier?
- EvilAnimator, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Family Guy = unfunny Simpsons ripoff.
Futurama wins anyway. - seattlephantom, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1They are both funny for what they are. Why does everything have to be a Mac vs PC thing?(the new black vs white)
- Modulo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1"Actually, the Flintstones was a precursor to it all..."
cough *honeymooners* cough

- dausone, on 10/12/2007, -14/+24Im going with the simpsons on this one... because they are o.g.
- CaliLove09, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3Your mom is o.g.
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yeah Simpsons has a better handle on how everything flows together. Family Guy (though I loved it before it got canned and now think it's far from funny) is just a sub par story with funny 1-liners that are added in during scenes that have nothing to do with the joke. Another major thing with these shows is that the Simpsons has a ton of characters to base episodes about to keep it fresh. Family Guy is the same few characters and the overuse of that old perverted guy every episode.
- Ohkneebee, on 10/12/2007, -14/+24simpsons kick ass.. dooh!!

- hozameen, on 10/12/2007, -28/+10Family Guy all the way!! Brian . . . Stewie. . . What can be better than those two?
- Ulisses, on 10/12/2007, -27/+8Peter.
- Hootyea, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Oh, I'm sorry, did your show have Conan O'Brien write for it?
No? Sorry.
- grookie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7the comments on the last page are priceless. i didnt even catch that the guy can't add- nevertheless its a good shot at trying to solve the debate even though he's wrong
- entropicchild, on 10/12/2007, -7/+32I gotta say that Stewie and brian are perhaps my favorite cartoon duo; However, all-in-all simpsons takes the cake... hands down...
- N1NJ4hippie, on 10/12/2007, -25/+4I'm sorry, but the best cartoon duo has to be Beavis and Butt-head.
- GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Beavis: "Ha ha"
Butthead: "Heh heh"
Get it? I don't. - spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2I have to agree that Beavis and Butthead was a better due. Stewie and Brian do play well off of eachother, but they care about eachother which equals more morals and less funny. Beavis and Butthead constantly dare the other to do idiotic things regardless of personal peril which is way funnier in my opinion.
Plus Beavis and Butthead never sing. I love them for that. Whenever Stewie and Brian start singing to eachother I hit the mute button with lightning speed. - rebopper, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@GawtMilk
Actually...
Beavis: "hm'heh"
Butthead: "huhuhuhuh"
Huge difference...
A little off topic, In kindergarten, my P.E. coach was named Mr. Beavis. Too bad the cartoon wasn't around for another 12 years or so.
- kinestaylahdat, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5not sure where the argument is here. i'm gonna have to go with Simpsons on this, especially after watching the clips where Family Guy is accused of "stealing" on Youtube.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZnNsbtsUV0- velocat74, on 10/12/2007, -10/+7Good artists copy. GREAT artists steal. - Written by Picasso, stolen by Steve Jobs.
- spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Simpsons is starting to steal from Family Guy too. They now have this fast-talking J. Jonah Jameson newspaper editor character who is the definitive Family Guy gag character. I like Simpsons better, but I cringe when I see them acting like they're threatened by Family Guy.
- AndyAt, on 10/12/2007, -11/+9Simpsons still the best.. I don't care wat you will say
- seanhupe, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4Gotta go with Family Guy.............. ya bastids!
- gristlebear, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4i chose...simpsons for wholesome family values
- grookie, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0omg did you say family values? wrong thread
- ganthirogani, on 10/12/2007, -13/+6Family guy definitely... big heads are the poo...
- FlaG8r, on 10/12/2007, -12/+8Simpsons are definitely the best (if this is 1994)
- CaliLove09, on 10/12/2007, -14/+3Gotta give The Simpsons love for being a classic, but Family Guy is hilarious!! Can't beat it...
- Wonkanobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+44How can you even begin to compare Snowball to Brian?
- RCcola159, on 10/12/2007, -16/+5Methinks the simpsons fans are digging down all the family guy fans...
- Alucardbsm, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1I agree. I watched all the videos and didn't laugh at any of the simpson's videos but laughed at about every single family guy video. Oh well, time to get dugg down.
Simpsons were good up till the point where they replaced the good authors with bad jokes.
- Alucardbsm, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1I agree. I watched all the videos and didn't laugh at any of the simpson's videos but laughed at about every single family guy video. Oh well, time to get dugg down.
- nicoleucla, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1My Name is Stewie but you can call me Cookie. Enough said.
- kikkoboyie, on 10/12/2007, -15/+9simpsons is finished
- jglaser, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32Buried for badmouthing Robot Chicken, comparing Brian to Snowball instead of Santa's Little Helper, and using those clips when there are much better ones.
- padlock7, on 10/12/2007, -59/+6No NO NO!!!!!!!!!!! Family guy is the winner hands down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Simpson's hasn't been funny since 1995. ***** that! Family is fresh and new. Simpson's needs to move over for the new Generation of comedy. I used to be a fan of the Simpson's.... then they just started to get lame..... stupid... mind-numbingly idiotic...... But Family Guy gave me a new hope. gave me a reason to go on watching cartoon comedy for adults....... Family WINS..... ***** anyone who still watches the Simpson's..... ***** you.
- bluetytanium, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31Get out of my internet tubes. Now.
- jimmiss, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Someday Family guy will start to suck and be over as well. But in the end, the show with the largest number of hilarious episodes will be the simpsons. They started it all. BTW, there new episodes are kinda tame, but they old ones are where it's at.
- HijackedFlavor, on 10/12/2007, -14/+38The Simpsons might have gone downhill, but Family Guy has never been funny.
- padlock7, on 10/12/2007, -32/+4and ***** you all that digg me down!!!!!
- nicoleucla, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2I'm with you Padlock, I got your back
- gnslngr1919, on 10/12/2007, -11/+77If you don't think that Futurama is the best animated comedy show, you can bite my shiny metal ass.
- Ndric, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11Yeah pretty much. Futurama beats both hands down
- mdeppi01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9A-freaking-men...
Futurama was witty, original and concise.. edgy and wholesome.. slapstick and sarcastic.. classic and culturally relevant at the same time...
Can't wait until next year...
- m2313, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Old simpsons pwned. The new stuff is getting a bit boring because they've been around so long they're running out of tricks. Either way Simpsons are better in IMO. Family Guy is good but it just doesn't match up to the greatness that is The Simpsons.
- padlock7, on 10/12/2007, -16/+3no way.... yeah it used to be good... but Family Guy is the new lord and master....
- LaueOfficer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Simpsons did it!
- jstem1994, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Maybe I'm alone on this, but can I like them both? And throw in Futurama, Beavis & Butthead, and American Dad (sometimes)
We can compare/disagree all day, but in the end I watch all of them whenever possible. Still beats any of the crappy "reality" shows, or stupid sitcoms with laugh tracks. Except for House, these animated shows are all I watch on regular TV anymore.
- spoon47, on 10/12/2007, -13/+11Family guy is a cheap knock-off of the Simpsons. The Simspons makes jokes. Family Guy copies them about two years later. It has happened over and over. Furthermore, the Simpsons is intelligent, snappy comedy. Family Guy is stupid humor for stupid people. No comparison.
- padlock7, on 10/12/2007, -18/+5you also are a ***** moron.... you can't copy what's been copied over .... and over..... and over.... and over again.... ***** idiot.
- spoon47, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Proof of plagerism:
http://www.jimmyr.com/blog/Family_Guy_Copies_Simpsons_123_2007.php - TwiztOG43, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i totally agree with you. i have seen almost every episode of both of the shows. i have dvd box sets, and watch the newer episodes when they air.
- Lobut, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3It's not a cheap knock-off if it has a different flavour entirely.
Family Guy has the old time references, South Park has the witty moral satire, Futurama has the 'smart' and 'witty' jokes, and the old Simpsons had it all. - scjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Kudos.
- padlock7, on 10/12/2007, -18/+5you also are a ***** moron.... you can't copy what's been copied over .... and over..... and over.... and over again.... ***** idiot.
- TheDiggPig, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3Both are good but I like Family Guy better....They should combine the two shows and make an hour long show! Maybe as neighbors or something...Peter could have an affair with Marge...that would be funny!
- m2313, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Genius!
- werdmath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They did this in an issue of Mad magazine.
Marge and Louis go lesbian and run off together. - jsballardx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7People still read Mad magazine?
- hedgehog1, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0I didn't know anyone watched either of these shows anymore. AllAboutSP son.
- RIMUSAR, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2i disagree with the result, but good comparisons
- BurnTees, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6family guy is SOOOOOOOO much funnier than the Simpsons
- edmoney90, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5They both pretty much suck now but in their prime I would definitely have to go with the Simpsons because they just had overall more emotion and better plots and 3 dimensional characters.
- blog4charity, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4Yeah!! Family Guy wins.
- stevealford, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Parker and Stone summed it up perfectly through Butters on South Park: "Simpsons already did it."
Family Guy is hilarious about 30% of the time, amusing about 5%, and completely ***** retarded the other 65%. I watch every episode, just for the 30%... but the Simpsons can't be touched when it comes to best adult cartoon comedy series ever, Futurama comes second, Family Guy a close third. I don't classify South Park as a cartoon, so I get to cop out on that one... but if pressed, I'd have to admit that it's the greatest animated series of all time. You can't find that level of intelligence in satire and allegory anywhere else these days... hell, most people don't even realize the political and cultural referrences and parallels because the show is so ***** funny that the second layer of humor flies under the radar.- DonCarcharo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Family Guy is hilarious about 30% of the time."
I think you hit the nail on the head here, at least for the new stuff. These days I fast-forward through large chunks of it, stopping at each new sequence hoping to catch the bright spots. When it's good it's great and when it's bad it's unbearable, painful even. Perhaps the saddest thing however is that the show is so disjointed anymore it doesn't even matter if you miss 2/3 of the episode. Which is exactly what I did the other day when Peter fought the stupid chicken for the fifth time.
- DonCarcharo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Family Guy is hilarious about 30% of the time."
- TwiztOG43, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0wow wow wait a second here. so your saying that just because Family Guy plagiarizes from the simpsons and makes it more funnier makes it ok? seriously?
its like a teacher grading papers, the teacher cant give cred. to the student even if it was funny, it was plagerizm. dont get me wrong i like family guy, but still, i notice, that they also do alot of "filing in" sometimes it seems that after they have plagerized the simpsons, they try to incoprorate something totally different. like stewie starts talking "bla bla bla like the time i met Bush" then they show a clip of that. i mean seriouly it looks like they dont have any good material they created themselves.
please don't bury even though i will be just like what happen a few weeks ago about the HD-DVD crap. i get buried by those who don't agree with me even though its the truth - DeFex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Family guy was funny before it was canceled. after it came back..toilet humor and "that reminds me of the time i met (insert famous person here here)"
the Simpsons still has some good episodes, not as many as they used to though. - xerigen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Wow. Listen, you can think either the Simpsons or Family Guy is better, but to say one or the other ISN'T FUNNY?! Come on, grow a sense of humor.
- DarkReign16, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Doh! This guy fails.
Simpsons is the true winner. - Gramage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think we're all forgetting something. It's impossible for ANY show to do ANYTHING that has not already been done on the Simpsons. The only thing the Simpsons never did was an epsiode about how everything that could possibly be done has already been done on the Simpsons. South Park covered that one.
Sooooo Family Guy is stuck between a rock and a funny place. That's also why the Simpsons isn't funny anymore. They've already done everthing.
I like all three shows and I really could care less what other people think. Family Guy and South Park get the most laughs out of me though.- velocat74, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with Gramage. Simpsons been on for over a decade and has pretty much covered everything.
- acomj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2South Park manages to be original and funny. As do other cartoons. South Park even had an episode talking about how the simpsons have done everything already, but really its a very different show.
Even the most jaded has to admit the video posted on here by spoon47 was pretty damming, gambling problem, the track scene, the child services... I mean come on, if they weren't on the same network you know there would be a lawsuit. Even the simpsons writers seemed to get aggravated enough to put peter Griffin as "plagarismo" in the big book of italian crimes.
The simpsons is now one of the longest running TV shows ever. 400+ episodes. That says a lot.
- ArthurSucks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This debate seems kind of dumb. Certain jokes have been around for ages.
- Yage2006, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I'm getting a bit tired of these "comparisons". Why don't they just start comparing sidcoms and start complaining about the billions similarities there too. .
That said they are too totally different shows that appeal to different people. Family guy is a bit more adult and takes things a bit farther then Simpsons. I like both shows for different reasons though I gotta say Simpsons is getting less and less funny and some ep's are just plain bad.- scjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A bit more adult? Thats a joke right? Right? Unless by farther you mean taking one simple "joke" and beating the living ***** out of it for five minutes. Like the chicken fights, and the Quagmire song, Peter hitting his knee. REAL DEEP.
- DonCarcharo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I really liked Family Guy during it's "repeats on Adult Swim just before bedtime run". I never watched it when it was originally on the air but I thoroughly enjoyed the show when it was canceled. As for the Simpsons, I've never been a fan but I've never disliked the show either. I watched it when I stumbled upon it but never made an effort to see it.
Now as for the NEW episodes of each? Personally I find Family Guy unwatchable these days. They went from skirting the line of obscene with innuendo and wit to just crossing the line and filling up the dead air with fart jokes and what seems like double the amount of flashbacks. Yeah it's all about the shock value but I don't find much shocking about it. It's no longer clever and I actually find myself fast-forwarding through large chunks of the show or just turning it off altogether.
The Simpsons on the other hand have actually gotten a little more enjoyable. Maybe it's because I miss Futurama (In my opinion the consistently better of the three shows) or maybe because I'm just tired of the fact that there's no point to watching Family Guy. No plot, no theme, just running gags and Seth McFarlane doing virtually every voice on the show.
/Can't wait for new Futurama - GleepGlop2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Of course Family Guy was influenced by the Simpsons. Only one of the 2 hasn't jumped the shark yet; guess which one! The Simpsons long ago became a sad parody of itself. Reminds me of how Star Wars just wouldn't go away and ruined the entire thing for itself. Yeah, The Simpsons is doing that now...
- Deedubau, on 10/12/2007, -2/+199 percent of the shows out there use ideas from previous shows so I don't even think things like this are relevant anymore. As long as the show is good I could care less. It used to bother me but not anymore because it's not good to critique everything I see. I notice tons of japanese animation shows are heavily copied from the dragonball series which may or may not be borrowed from something else! Example; Goofy main guy, fights and almost dies form someone then befriends them, loses to a villian and gets stronger to beat the big villain, only to feel weak again from the next big villain repeat.....
Some people say simpsons is a takeoff from flinstones but I was too young when Flinstones was on tv. I will give some serious credit to South Park though. I'm not really an avid viewer of the show but i've seen some newer episodes of it and it is BRILLIANT. The humor is over the top and very original and I love the spoofs they do on existing properties! - dimplemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The Simpsons begat Family Guy. It's an evolutionary thing. They both stand well on their own.
- Cojawfee, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Why is it telling me to install Flash 8 when I have Flash 9?
- DonCarcharo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Because Flash 8 is better than Flash 9. If you don't believe me, visit my website where I compare Flash 8 to Flash 9 in a pound for pound, feature for feature, functionality-driven comparison of Flash 8 and Flash 9.
- Damienz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The Simpsons is better on the basis that it is funnier and has quality. Family Guy basically appeals to 15 year olds who feel mature by watching a show with sex jokes and violence. You say the Simpsons is old and doesn't have new ideas? Why don't you try maintaning a show for 18 years, it's because you can't. If you could, you would be working in Hollywood and not posting on Digg like the rest of us.
- sathias, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Personally I think that Southpark nailed it when they did their double episode about Family Guy. It's funny, but its not very well written unlike The Simpsons, Futurama, or Southpark.
YMMV of course :) - ccase2k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is the most asinine thing i have ever seen. You can't compare the characters to decide who has the better show, and plus it's a matte of opinion. It's stupid to even try to compare them. They are two different styles of humor, it's just impossible.
- djsleeper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0you're supposed to compare different things my furry friend, it's really hard to compare two things that are exactly the same
- getsk3wled, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1totally been posted before.
