- radicaldementia, on 10/12/2007, -6/+177agreed. They try to compare characters based on their place in the family, but their roles in the show are very different. Yeah, Maggie and Stewie are both babies, but Stewie is much more of a main character than Maggie. The opposite is true with Bart and Chris, nobody cares about Chris (and I think almost everything he says is dumb), but Bart is one of the lead characters. Meg is there just to get made fun of, while Lisa is supposed to be the braniac of the family. And yeah, Homer and Peter are both dumb, but at least Homer can be funny without saying "wow this is just like that time when....(random cut scene)" every 30 seconds.
Family Guy is funny, but The Simpsons is pretty much an American classic. - jimmiss, on 10/12/2007, -14/+129Without the simpsons, there would be NO family guy. NO southpark. NO adult cartoons in general. They were the precursor to it all.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+76the creator of this page is out of his/her mind...
- gnslngr1919, on 10/12/2007, -11/+77If you don't think that Futurama is the best animated comedy show, you can bite my shiny metal ass.
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -3/+47"dooh"
dooh? DOOH? It's D'oh. - Wonkanobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+44How can you even begin to compare Snowball to Brian?
- jglaser, on 10/12/2007, -4/+32Buried for badmouthing Robot Chicken, comparing Brian to Snowball instead of Santa's Little Helper, and using those clips when there are much better ones.
- bluetytanium, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31Get out of my internet tubes. Now.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+32I gotta say that Stewie and brian are perhaps my favorite cartoon duo; However, all-in-all simpsons takes the cake... hands down...
- HijackedFlavor, on 10/12/2007, -14/+38The Simpsons might have gone downhill, but Family Guy has never been funny.
- johnnybluejeans, on 10/12/2007, -12/+36@jimmiss
"Without the simpsons, there would be NO family guy. NO southpark. NO adult cartoons in general. They were the precursor to it all."
Actually, the Flintstones was a precursor to it all... - sigsegfalt, on 10/12/2007, -8/+28I could live without ever seeing another installment of the Peter/Chicken fight sequence.
- albrad84, on 10/12/2007, -17/+35The early to mid Simpsons years absolutely destroy even Family Guy's best years, but during the time in which they both have been on the air (the last 5 years or so), Family Guy has been much better, due mostly to the terrible writing that has plagued the Simpsons in their later years.
- themastersb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Like they said on SouthPark: The Simpsons has already done everything possible so it's practically impossible to not copy it in some small way.
- racekarl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17@jimmiss:
You're showing your (lack of) age. The Flintstones originally aired in prime-time and was intended for adult audiences, exactly like the Simpsons, Family Guy et al. that followed them. - Hootyea, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Oh, I'm sorry, did your show have Conan O'Brien write for it?
No? Sorry. - stevealford, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Parker and Stone summed it up perfectly through Butters on South Park: "Simpsons already did it."
Family Guy is hilarious about 30% of the time, amusing about 5%, and completely ***** retarded the other 65%. I watch every episode, just for the 30%... but the Simpsons can't be touched when it comes to best adult cartoon comedy series ever, Futurama comes second, Family Guy a close third. I don't classify South Park as a cartoon, so I get to cop out on that one... but if pressed, I'd have to admit that it's the greatest animated series of all time. You can't find that level of intelligence in satire and allegory anywhere else these days... hell, most people don't even realize the political and cultural referrences and parallels because the show is so ***** funny that the second layer of humor flies under the radar. - dausone, on 10/12/2007, -14/+24Im going with the simpsons on this one... because they are o.g.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -14/+24simpsons kick ass.. dooh!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9A-freaking-men...
Futurama was witty, original and concise.. edgy and wholesome.. slapstick and sarcastic.. classic and culturally relevant at the same time...
Can't wait until next year... - LaueOfficer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Simpsons did it!
- jimmiss, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Someday Family guy will start to suck and be over as well. But in the end, the show with the largest number of hilarious episodes will be the simpsons. They started it all. BTW, there new episodes are kinda tame, but they old ones are where it's at.
- sfpfc, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15sorry the timer ran out before i could edit it but family guy will never ever match the success of the simpsons
the simpsons is probably one of the few shows that you can watch reruns on a weekday everyday and not get bored of it. I watch it 5:00/5:30 if i have the time and i still laugh at the jokes.
i just hate family guy because i think they believe they they push the limits with their show but they don't come close to south park. I have no doubt that if there was no simpsons there would be no family guy because watching family guy is like watching a crappy rerun of the simpsons while catching every time they steal a joke from em. in addition, the critic was a great show too (if it was released a few years ago during fox animation domination sunday i am sure it would still be making new shows) I can just remember the episode of the simpsons when the critic's jay sherman was on the show.

hell, even the simpsons don't overdo the stupid jokes that last forever, and when the simpsons do it, it is actually funny. - EvilAnimator, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Family Guy = unfunny Simpsons ripoff.
Futurama wins anyway. - xerigen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Wow. Listen, you can think either the Simpsons or Family Guy is better, but to say one or the other ISN'T FUNNY?! Come on, grow a sense of humor.
- jsballardx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7People still read Mad magazine?
- sathias, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Personally I think that Southpark nailed it when they did their double episode about Family Guy. It's funny, but its not very well written unlike The Simpsons, Futurama, or Southpark.
YMMV of course :) - DrunkenDevil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Homer losing to Peter is complete BS.
- grookie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7if you don't care who copied who, but rather who is the funniest, are you saying its the delivery, not the joke?
- grookie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7the comments on the last page are priceless. i didnt even catch that the guy can't add- nevertheless its a good shot at trying to solve the debate even though he's wrong
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yeah Simpsons has a better handle on how everything flows together. Family Guy (though I loved it before it got canned and now think it's far from funny) is just a sub par story with funny 1-liners that are added in during scenes that have nothing to do with the joke. Another major thing with these shows is that the Simpsons has a ton of characters to base episodes about to keep it fresh. Family Guy is the same few characters and the overuse of that old perverted guy every episode.
- pnkflyd350, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6What? homer lost. He has a passage in the dictionary.
- Gramage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think we're all forgetting something. It's impossible for ANY show to do ANYTHING that has not already been done on the Simpsons. The only thing the Simpsons never did was an epsiode about how everything that could possibly be done has already been done on the Simpsons. South Park covered that one.
Sooooo Family Guy is stuck between a rock and a funny place. That's also why the Simpsons isn't funny anymore. They've already done everthing.
I like all three shows and I really could care less what other people think. Family Guy and South Park get the most laughs out of me though. - spoon47, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Proof of plagerism:
http://www.jimmyr.com/blog/Family_Guy_Copies_Simpsons_123_2007.php - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5This is not even close. Comparing the Simpson to Family Guy is like comparing Michael Jordan to Lebron James, yeah Lebron can run like the wind right now, but MJ got 6 rings baby. I mean are you kidding me? SOUTH PARK freaking made an episode called "The Simpsons already did it". I mean the Simpson is a series that defines American TV, its one of the top 10 greatest show of ALL TIME.
- DonCarcharo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I really liked Family Guy during it's "repeats on Adult Swim just before bedtime run". I never watched it when it was originally on the air but I thoroughly enjoyed the show when it was canceled. As for the Simpsons, I've never been a fan but I've never disliked the show either. I watched it when I stumbled upon it but never made an effort to see it.
Now as for the NEW episodes of each? Personally I find Family Guy unwatchable these days. They went from skirting the line of obscene with innuendo and wit to just crossing the line and filling up the dead air with fart jokes and what seems like double the amount of flashbacks. Yeah it's all about the shock value but I don't find much shocking about it. It's no longer clever and I actually find myself fast-forwarding through large chunks of the show or just turning it off altogether.
The Simpsons on the other hand have actually gotten a little more enjoyable. Maybe it's because I miss Futurama (In my opinion the consistently better of the three shows) or maybe because I'm just tired of the fact that there's no point to watching Family Guy. No plot, no theme, just running gags and Seth McFarlane doing virtually every voice on the show.
/Can't wait for new Futurama - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'll take Fry any day of the week.
- OsiVert, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10I don't know why a lot people try to jump on one side. Heck, I like Simpsons/Family Guy/South Park. You find one funnier than the other depending on what mood you're in. Family Guy is slapstick comedy; South Park is very clever and Simpsons can play both sides. They all have their place.
- jsballardx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The writer of this article pulled a homer.
- scjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A bit more adult? Thats a joke right? Right? Unless by farther you mean taking one simple "joke" and beating the living ***** out of it for five minutes. Like the chicken fights, and the Quagmire song, Peter hitting his knee. REAL DEEP.
- Damienz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The Simpsons is better on the basis that it is funnier and has quality. Family Guy basically appeals to 15 year olds who feel mature by watching a show with sex jokes and violence. You say the Simpsons is old and doesn't have new ideas? Why don't you try maintaning a show for 18 years, it's because you can't. If you could, you would be working in Hollywood and not posting on Digg like the rest of us.
- TwiztOG43, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i totally agree with you. i have seen almost every episode of both of the shows. i have dvd box sets, and watch the newer episodes when they air.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Doh! This guy fails.
Simpsons is the true winner. - Usernamesarefun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Simpsons=classic
- scjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The post sucks, the jokes aren't even on the same level. Family Guy is all dick and fart jokes, and so predictable it bored me after about ten episodes. The Simpsons is better in every way, the writing has taken it's turns but has never totally relied on simple throw away jokes; that's why it's still running so strong. Even with American Dad vs. Futurama, Futurama is amazing and American Dad, well... wtf. One last Family Guy suck comment: The movie.. I didn't laugh once. But the animators are ***** good. That's their only competition with The Simpsons, which they also lose in.
- rebopper, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@GawtMilk
Actually...
Beavis: "hm'heh"
Butthead: "huhuhuhuh"
Huge difference...
A little off topic, In kindergarten, my P.E. coach was named Mr. Beavis. Too bad the cartoon wasn't around for another 12 years or so. - spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Simpsons is starting to steal from Family Guy too. They now have this fast-talking J. Jonah Jameson newspaper editor character who is the definitive Family Guy gag character. I like Simpsons better, but I cringe when I see them acting like they're threatened by Family Guy.
- geoffreyireland, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Peter over Homer?
Get the ***** outta here.
While Peter holds FG together, Homer is just Homer a ***** legend. This list is *****. - Usernamesarefun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And I think by seeing all the buried comments I can speak for all of us when I say "Shut up and grow up, padlock7"
- werdmath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They did this in an issue of Mad magazine.
Marge and Louis go lesbian and run off together. -
