Graham Yost wrote Speed. He is the son of Elwy Yost, host of Saturday Night at the Movies on TVO for the past 30 years at least.

Specifically he is known to have worked on the dialogue between the two main characters (apologies, their names currently aren't in my head) to create a more convincing relationship. That bit of trivia is direct from the autobio' "Joss Whedon: The Genius Behind Buffy" (Candace Havens).

I don't think the show won fans over because it follows 'My Name is Earl', which in my opinion is a pretty retarded show.
