The ones you don't want voting in the next election. - digitalgopher, on 10/12/2007, -15/+78I know it's GW we were listening to but, regardless, it's a sad day when more folks watch the absolute garbage of a show that American Idol is than something that like the State of the Union which addresses the current, short-term and long-term future of the country we live in and has direct economic and social implications for each and every one of us.
Shame on you.
On a somewhat related note, I still can't believe shows like Arrested Development get canceled and yet horse ***** like American Idol is still on the air. Who are these people that watch this garbage? - unpurposed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Bad thing for America. Who cares about Idol?
- blahtastic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16SUPPOSEDLY YES, HOW ASTUTE OF YOU TO NOTICE! /caps
- blahtastic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Ok, honestly I pay as little attention to politics as I can without it making me a complete moron (I'm a disgrace, I know). But if you really want the info, why watch the miserably long and boring State of the Union (about 50% of which is usually gratuitous applause) when you can read a summary of what was said in about 10 minutes on the internet?
I think ADD wins out in this case. - alex189a, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Doesn't surprise me but still makes me scared and a bit disappointed.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14DON'T MORE PROPLE VOTE FOR AMERICAN IDOL THAN FOR THE PRESIDENCY TOO?
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16"absolute garbage of a show"
I didn't watch either, but this accurately describes the lies and and delusional conclusions that is the State of the Union. Watching that, one would get the impression that Bush is the consummate environmentalist and that the war on terror is solely based upon the misguided thoughts that the "terrorists are jealous of our freedoms".
I'd rather read the transcript a day later than watch our idiot of a president stumble his way through his lies yet again. - wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I'm not sure which is worse. That so many people were disillusion at what they thought the President was going to say, or so many other are so enamored with that piece of dreck.
God, Ford Prefect was right. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6THE WEST COAST were the ONLY ONES forced to make the decision of America Idol or State of the Union. Here in Central time zone, Idol came on at 7 and State of the Union at 8. Don't blame the east coast...
- davecor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7...And the winner of the 2008 Presidential Election will be the candidate with the best MySpace profile and the most friends.
- benijuana, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6i didn't watch either of them, and i don't regret that
- bjohns, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I do. We are in a freaking WAR.
- sbrown123, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"than something that like the State of the Union which addresses the current, short-term and long-term future of the country we live in"
Lets see: Iraq war, tax cuts for businesses and those who don't really need tax cuts, and...um....thats it. The other stuff he says is just fluff which he will never do anything about. I think most Americans know Bush follows his tired old personal agenda and watching him repeat it again, and again, and again seems pretty tiring. Hell, American Idol is more original than any changes Bush would talk about. I think a repeat M.A.S.H. episode would be more original and constructive. - benijuana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riKGGWFqnH8
recent history has shown that to be a very bad idea - GonadHunter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Tom?
- alex189a, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Ouch. I hear where you're coming from, but damn.
- alex189a, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Excellent execution, both of you. +1
I woulda spelled YOU as YUO though. - VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4There was a State of the Union address?
- trimpton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I thought it was kinda boring after the first encore.
I'm sure many saw it on the internet instead, TV ratings are growing meaningless if they weren't always. - RealityCheque, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7"Who are these people that actually watch this garbage?"
Nearly 37 million people...
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/television/news/e3i5047ab3e2ae42934c7085e8ffe1c3536
That's about 36,750,000 more than those that watched Firefly! (HAHAHAHAHA) - Nizerifin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I say that the #1 problem with America is not Bush, the Republicans, the Democrats, terrorists, global warming, but IGNORANCE! People have no clue what they think or believe because they have no clue what's going on in this country. They have no clue what has happened in its history either. The low interest in the state of their country proves that APATHY has ruled over many and why the voting percentages are so low.
1. Too many are here trying to get all they can w/o giving. People are safe at night, no reason to bother with politics... WRONG!
2. If you don't vote, don't you dare complain.
3. If you do vote, educate yourself first! Know why you're voting!
If people stepped up on this, well, the country would be much better. - DRTED, on 10/12/2007, -11/+15They should have just had Bush walk out on the american idol stage and perform the state of the union....like a "mashup," you know, the cool new word that has been spreding like wildfire over digg..MASHUP KID
- toomuchfreetime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm old enough to vote. I pay attention to the issues. This doesn't mean that I'm not sick of listening to George Bush try to justify going to Iraq, and discussing all sorts of economic and political issues that, let's face it, he has no clue about.
I watched Idol, and I turned off the TV at 9:00pm. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3""Idol" garnered a 12.6 rating among adults 18 to 49, according to preliminary Nielsen Media Research figures. That's a 20 percent drop from last week's two-hour season premiere, but Fox points out the singing competition is still up 7 percent compared to its State of the Union-night telecast last year. "
Has it already been mentioned? The big 4 DID beat Idol by a few points in the ratings. This story is reporting the 18 to 49 demographic. - gmprunner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Maybe they should start having the President do musical numbers every so often during the STOU.
- berfmurret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3personally i don't care enough to waste an hour from my day to watch what that lunatic has to say. he will do whatever he wants anyways. no need for him to justify his actions to me. personally i would rather just catch the synopsys online....
- alex189a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Might have already been posted (sorry if so) but does anyone else see the irony of the banner ad in the middle of the page? If not, refresh a few times.
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I don't know of that's a good thing for Idol, or a bad thing for America...
- CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well we all knew what he was going to say.
- wh0r4cl3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4So I was playing beer pong with a bunch of people during the speech. And said "How much do you want to be that american idol gets better ratings then the state of the union?" Everyone laughed but nobody wanted to put money down. :(
- gboodhoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3actually its the people who voted so "rationally" last time around that concern me. Despite the hand-wringing posturing, what of any real significance was stated during the address? Seemed to me like business as usual and ham handed propaganda.
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That was my point ~_^
- albinoMithos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Man instead of watching American Idol or the State of the Union I did something useful with my life and played video games.
- swimmingbird67, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6well... the at least the judges are honest.
- SuspectDevice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The fact that more people were watching Idol says more about the state of our union then anything Bush said in his entire speech.
- fibreoptix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ah ..... your all hypocrites. Look, I hate the show too, but the first couple of weeks are funny...come on. I actually watched the GW speech and I'm Canadian. But there was nothing in the speech you didn't already know, so why watch it anyway? The only interesting thing I noticed was when GW said something like applaud if you support the troops there, and the ones that are going there.
Then the Democrats had no choice even though they disagree with the latter. I thought that was the big highlight.....I know lame.
Go watch whatever you want and stop judging people. Now stand and applaud this comment for 30 secs. - m1th, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4And yet these are the people who will vote for the next "lame duck president".
- TimmyGUNZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, to be fair to Idol, they DO let you vote by text message.
- guardsman85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@bjohns
Good point, but actually most of the address didn't even relate to the war. Being from the Midwest myself, I'm wondering how on earth we're going to crank out enough ethanol to meet the President's new goals. I'm not a farmer, but corn prices are sky-rocketing as it is. Even more demand for it will have an effect on many areas of the economy. That includes fuel prices, pork and beef prices (corn is used for feed), and the price just about anything that contains corn products--like cereal, soda, chips, pizza (crust)... - Charron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I dunno, I have a hard time believing these pre-teens will be voting for anything besides American Idol for quite some time.
- SpeedyG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So tell us: did you watch either one?
I'm betting that practically anyone could tell you the information presented in the speech without having seen it. Iraq, war on terror, economy, a couple of empty promises, single out a few people (like Dikembe Mutombo, who is described as humble before hilariously raising his arms and lapping up the crowd applause), and call it a night. Somewhere between 49% and 100% of the crowd stands and applauds every thirty seconds.
And if you really have no guess? Transcripts online, read 'em in 10 minutes or so. You'll have saved yourself 50 minutes. - aserer511, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Eh, I wanna say I am surprised, but I am not....I'm a republican and I don't even consider this really 'sad' on our part. you can just get a summary of the SotU on news.google.com when it's over...
- tb0n3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The reason I didn't watch the State of the Union address: It's all just filler. Nothing is really said by Bush that he hasn't been said before, at another time, or another place. He parrots the same phrases over and over and over again.
And besides, we have the "blogosphere" to tell us what was said, and what our opinions on the subjects discussed should be anyway, so why bother?
That being said, I didn't watch American Idol, either. Same reasons. %s/Bush/the judges/ - brianbennett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What if you add the cable news networks?
- tb0n3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1--"Bush DID hint--for what may be the first recorded time--that he might be buying into global warming by talking about a need to "combat global climate change"

I didn't believe that we was serious then, and I don't believe that he's serious now. - shreveyboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Although this is slightly unrelated:
@rig0rmortis - "Simon said, "Ok, Ping-pong or whatever your name is...."
Simon, being British (god, why do I know that?), has probably seen the
sketch show 'Little Britain' a few times in his life. And that line right there
is commonly used when referring to one of the Asian characters on the show.
I;m sorry rig0rmortis, but I hardly believe Simon, or American Idol, is original.
@hukedonfonix: When I was 14 I 'jerked off' plenty of times, but still made time
to care about politics, education, my grades, etc. - guardsman85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Took me about 6 refreshes, but yeah...that's ironic!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not a fair comparison. Add up the viewers on all channels in the EST timezone only, then it would be fair. In PST zone, there were much less available viewers during the SOU.
- lbytesxk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1my dog has a larger mental capacity than the average american TV viewer, so this shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone.
