When this was first posted someone linked to the story behind it. Basically it started off with the one little move, and every once in awhile they'd tag on something new. The "3 Stooges" eye poke, etc. It became a ritual for these two because the first segment usually covers the most depressing stories-- fires, crimes, death.
So this is a way for them to "liven up" and remember the world they live in. Eventually, it just got more and more complicated until they started rehearsing it off-hours. It's apparently a ritual now.
Here is the interview:
HeadCandy — Is there a name for this?
Robert Jordan — We came up with the title “What Anchors Do During Commercials,” because people are always asking what the anchors do during commercials. We said yeah, this is what all anchors do.
HC — Until now, it’s only the crew that got the show.
Jordan — The camera crew from our weekend shows have for the most part been with us for years and years, and this has developed over 10 years. And they critique us – that wasn’t so good, you missed a move.
HC — What was the first move?
Jordan — It kind of started with the Three Stooges. Jackie used to always poke at me with the two fingers, like Moe, and I would always put my hand up to block her. And that was our move. And it took off from that.
HC — Where do the moves come from?
Jordan — Some have significance. One night there was a fly in the studio, buzzing around Jackie. I thought we’d gone to a clip and she was off camera. So I reached out and tried to grab it. Did it twice. And as it turned out she was on camera. When we went to commercial we laughed. And it became part of it. The shotgun comes from Dick Cheney, the fist bump comes from Barack and Michelle. During one late Cubs game, we came up with the baseball move.
HC — And you keep adding?
Jordan — Most of the moves I’ve come up with, she rejects. I’ll say, Let’s do this. She’ll say, ‘No.’ I’ll say OK, what about this? ‘That’s too stupid.’ Her favorite line is ‘You’re ruining my anchor credibility.’
HC — How far can you go?
Jordan — We’re already almost out of commercial time. The commercial break is 2 ½ minutes, and I think we’re up around 2:25. That gives us 5 seconds to get back and compose ourselves again.
HC — How do you keep a straight face?
Jordan — The first segment of the show is the death and destruction thing, the murders and the fires and the really horrid stories. You come out of that first segment and it’s pretty tense. That loosens us up a little bit. The rest of the show generally isn’t as intense as that first segment. Coming out of that, sometimes we’ll look at each other and whew, that was pretty rough. - cawpin, on 02/10/2009, -0/+7This isn't the best you'll see. We got satellite television when I was about 8. It was the big dish that you moved between satellites. Whenever a news station from another city was on and they went to commercial our feed stayed on because they just played local commercials over whatever station they were on. You won't see a better freak out than a news person who thinks they're off camera. It was quite awesome.
