- ngageguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26Firefly/Serenity always gets a digg. "Can't stop the signal"
- c5mjohn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26"ok so enough with the firefly don't you people have a forum or something to pray to the firefly god?"
Yea. I call it the Internet.
I miss Firefly... - imalegend, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Just shows what happens when people group together to make a bad situation better.
Kudos to all the organisers who pulled it off and it was great to hear that the actors invited to the Flanvention turned up to the Back-Up Bash.
Makes me all goosebumpy again and that dream of a second movie a little more real. - ringo380, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20I've seen this on the front page 3 times over 3 consecutive days now.
And I'm still digging it up, gorramit. - jaewalker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I already thought these folks were terrific (both the actors and the fans) - this only reinforces my admiration for them.
- podgey22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Haha agreed. The internet is for porn, firefly and bitching about all films and TV that aren't firefly based...
You don't need to tell us it's a dupe. We either:
a) know already but still like it
b) don't care - podgey22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Me too.
It's good the fans got what they want. I just feel sorry for the people that got their travel refunded and/or didn't bother going. The people that "organised" this should be hung out to dry.
One other thing to mention is how dedicated the Firefly stars are to their fans. If this sort of crap was pulled on 9/10 other shows, the stars would have just stayed at home rather than showing up and going on with it regardless of there not being a venue. Perhaps they'll be able to convince stingy Whedonpants to make another series of Firefly or even just another film. We can only live in hope. - Taedirk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The money you spent on a computer and internet connection could have been spent on people starving and dying all over the world as well. I know I wish it would've been.
- c5mjohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7You can also listen to the Firefly 'verse podcasts for the latest news.
The Signal http://signal.serenityfirefly.com/
Firefly Talk http://fireflytalk.libsyn.com/ - andr3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7What I will never understand is why the studios won't put their money behind this baby... I know it didn't do as good as people were expecting in the box office, but it didn't do poorly either ($25,514,517 in the US alone -- according to http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?page=weekend&id=serenity.htm )... The expectations were just too high!
On top of that, this is one of those rare shows/films (like star trek, stargate sg1, battlestar galactica, etc) that a huge amount of people will put down their cash and buy whatever stuff comes out. The Firefly DVD and Serenity DVD were some of the best selling articles in amazon.com. The series DVD, released in 2002, is still at #31 in their DVD Top Sellers list!
The group works, starting with the Director, Whedon aka new George Lucas, to the amazing set of actors.
The big shots need to get their stuff together and do what we, the people, want. More films. More seasons. Thank you. - c5mjohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I don't think its up to Joss. Someone needs to pony up some cash first.
- rickweasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I wanna know how one finds out about these. I was a big buffy fan back in the days but never knew where or how to find out about these conventions. It was cool that Nathan came out for those fans even when he wasn't paid for it. Thats awesome
- sapphicbeats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6shiny! :)
- ringo380, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm betting this:
http://www.fireflyfans.net/
would be a good place to start. I'm sure the discussion board has mention of these kinds of events, if nothing else on the site does. I haven't really visited it that often, but I always hear that it's the biggest firefly fan site. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I found out about it through http://whedonesque.com/
It doesn't have a discussion board or anything but it's great for finding whedon related news. - roniabirk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The Firefly/Serenity cast and crew are amazing, the Jossverse actress who helped with super-secret location rocks, and another outside fandom actor joined in too when he heard what was going on. (He was associated with other BE events.) I am so glad this weekend was turned around by the Browncoats, once again.
- Trogdor420, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Check out http://www.mosquitoverse.com/
From the site:
"Mosquito: Behind the Scenes Preview"
is a comedic parody of Joss Whedon's sadly short-lived "Firefly" television show. Clips and interviews with the cast and crew accentuate this humorous sneak peak at another up and coming, yet doomed to failure, science fiction/western series.
Based on the DVD featurette "Here's How it Was," this short was filmed and produced by a crew in and around Brandon, Manitoba, Canada, between May 9th and June 15th, 2005.
Directed by: Nathan Town - Trogdor420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4 You can also view the 'Mosquitoe' short on Youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=puUsMYcI74g
I apologize Pinto if I killed your site by linking to it on Digg. I thought the exposure might be good for your upcoming film. - rooster1056, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4We're digging it because We've Done The Impossible Again!
>Boobs and Firefly supersede duping rules.
Amen to that!!!!
Two more sites for you rickweasel:
BigDamnBoard's Web Site Directory has tons of links: http://www.bigdamnboard.com/
My site links list: http://rooster1056.stumbleupon.com/
I didn't know there was that much stuff out there until I started hunting for it.
Now, I'm trying to bookmark all of it and comment it for reference.
The Firefly community is huge, but the networks seem to be ignorant to that. - c5mjohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I Digg you down because you are mean. If you had a civil tone while stating your "opinions", then I would digg you up.
- andr3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you take into account international numbers the number will rise, not counting with dvd sales.
But I agree, this movie could have done so much better... One of the arguments that come up frequently is the poor job Universal did promoting this movie... It seems that studio executives always have a rough time supporting Firefly/Serenity... from the series getting axed at fox until the whole marketing campaign for the movie.
Either way, numbers don't translate literally the quality of the piece. You dissed Kevin Smith along with Joss... To me, you lost all credibility. I could sum up your whole comment into "I don't like his work", which isn't exactly the same as "He is a bad director". - Krakn3Dfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I watched Serenity again this weekend, awesome movie, great story, and one of the few movies out there with a good ending. I've heard talk of TV movies on the Sci-Fi Channel, I hope that happens, although it would be better if they made it to the big screen again. They're making money hand-over-foot on the Firefly DVDs, and no one thinks it would be worth it to revive the series? Amazing the short sightedness of these companies.
- c5mjohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It doesn't "need" to be dugg up. And you don't "need" to make an inane comment.
This news keeps getting frontpaged because of our love.
We love Firefly.
"Love keeps her in the air when she ought to fall down..." - c5mjohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thats fine. I never try to "recruit" people. Firefly just makes me happy so I talk about it a lot(and digg stories about it). I don't think I am going overboard.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Why do you even care who likes the show? Watch it, and judge for yourself if it is good or not....
- c5mjohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thank you, old man. :)
But even if we never get the Star Trek treatment, my faith in Firefly will always make me happy.
"You don't fix faith. Faith fixes you." - VinceRavensayl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Amen, Firefly rules, It feels good to be a Brown Coat!
- rooster1056, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2>Uhm, yeah, this overboard fandom is the reason I stuck away from Whedon's work >(aside from the fact that Buffy was crap). You're not convincing anyone, you nuts look >worse than Trekkies. How many people looked into Star Trek after meeting a Trekkie?
I was a Trekkie in the mid-60's & we put up with your type back then, too.
What did it get us??? --> Beaucoup spinoffs and movies.
We forgive you for being a gorram purplebelly :o)
We'll even accept your opinion.
If you wanna state it more than once, we reserve our right to do the same.
Now if you want to be nasty, why don't you just fadeout??? - itsHef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Never underestimate the never say die scrappiness of sci-fi fans.
- PDelahanty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't know what resources exist for Firefly-type conventions, but I know that anime fans can find conventions at http://www.animecons.com/
- c5mjohn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"this overboard fandom is the reason I stuck away from Whedon's work"
So you stay away from anything with a large, active fanbase? So you don't like Star Trek, Star Wars, Apple, Nintendo, Grand Theft Auto, Halo, Firefox, and Digg?
Thats cool. At least you have principles. - rooster1056, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2>One good sequel like 20 years later, another semi-good one when it ripped the plot off of
Were you even alive back then??
Can you speak knowledgeably of an era, if you weren't involved with it?
The fans kept the original series on the air when the network tried to pull the plug.
That's what I'm talking about.
That is what fandom is all about.
There were issues with Spock's ears (Could this be Satan?), Kirk kissing Uhura (Oh No - a Black & White thang), and a Russian on the crew (Those damned Commies).
Roddenberry's orginal concept was way ahead of it's time, and yes, that type of paranoia existed back then.
I am sorry that you are so bitter. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1firefly was cancelled?
hell, i never even heard of it until right now - rowlodge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i did'nt...
- phlavor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0By wrapping up all of the story lines and killing off people who had potential for new ones in Serenity, they (the producers) basically screwed themselves out of bringing back the show in any viable form. I'm sure new story lines could be created but it was the mystery of the diverse past of the crew and the back story of the universe itself that made for good viewing.
Now? Well, that ship has sailed. - fadeout, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0"I was a Trekkie in the mid-60's & we put up with your type back then, too.
What did it get us???"
One good sequel like 20 years later, another semi-good one when it ripped the plot off of another show. Many of the original actors won't even touch the franchise again and have made fun of you to no small extent while your money keeps Shatner in the poon.
"We'll even accept your opinion."
Apparently not, considering I can't even criticize the spamming of this article onto the front page over and over again without getting dugg down. - bwesterman, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1uggg. firefly sucks.
- fadeout, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0As much as I enjoy Firefly how many times does this "news" need to get dugg up?
Seeing the same article over and over and over again isn't going to get anyone to buy the DVDs, guys. Give it a rest. - converge, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2i'm digging this because Firefly rules, but i'm also burying it as a dupe.
- fadeout, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0"This news keeps getting frontpaged because of our love.
We love Firefly."
Uhm, yeah, this overboard fandom is the reason I stuck away from Whedon's work (aside from the fact that Buffy was crap). You're not convincing anyone, you nuts look worse than Trekkies. How many people looked into Star Trek after meeting a Trekkie? - archer75, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1This was posted yesterday on digg. Why do people insist on posting duplicates articles when the system tells you it's already been posted?
- BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1Serenity budget: $40+ mil
Serenity box office: $25 million
The movie was a critical and commercial failure, just like the television show (it was cancelled early).
I am a big fan of sci-fi and I really wish all these Firefly fanatics would stop giving real science-fiction fans a bad name. Joss Whedon is a nerd like Quentin Tarantino except Tarantino has all the talent and understanding of cinema that Whedon lacks...so he's just a talentless nerd. He uses the SAME tricks over and over again: so-called witty (only witty to brain-dead TV-watchers who never read) rapid-fire dialogue, strong heroines, homosexuality, etc. He has a limited bag of tricks up his sleeve, just like fellow Hollywood hack Kevin Smith, and like Smith...his star is quickly fading as he is now working on comic books and couldn't get a new film produced if his life depended on it.
The guy is a television writer, for christ's sake. If you want to worship somebody, go worship Cameron or Aronofsky! - onelikeseabass, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0yes, congratulations to those that raised thousands of dollars to hang out with ACTORS
people starving and dying all over the world need that money far more
news like this makes me sick - MEbuDDy6, on 10/12/2007, -18/+3Dupe, from just 2 days ago.
http://digg.com/television/Serenity_Firefly_cast_turn_up_to_cancelled_convention - RadiatedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -41/+2ok so enough with the firefly don't you people have a forum or something to pray to the firefly god?
