Letterman CLEARLY did not imply that he wanted Palin's 14 year old daughter to be raped. The Palin family are exploiting the fact that it was vaguely written as a way to keep her in the news so that she's relevant nationally when the election cycle starts up again next year.

The so-called "members of the Left on Digg" are not necessarily saying people shouldn't make off-color jokes about each other. They can say derogatory things about Palin supporters and are not hypocrites unless they say Palin supporters shouldn't say derogatory things about them. The Palin supporters are making off-color comments about Letterman while saying he shouldn't be allowed to make off-color comments. Thus they are hypocrites.
If everyone is eating pizza, the only people who are hypocrites are the ones saying "You shouldn't eat pizza" with a mouthful of pizza. Anyone--regardless of whether or not he/she is eating pizza--who points this out is not necessarily a hypocrite.
