- Dradis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26It's pretty cool that Sci-Fi did this.. acknowledging their audience and fostering creativity are two things that television networks all too often fail to do.
- cypher35, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13from the guidelines section:
"Do not post your film on other sites, such as YouTube, MySpace, Google, etc."
Are they nuts??? This is the perfect oppurtunity for a ***** of free viral marketing and they're going to tie it down to their own in-house video viewer thingie? Sheesh. - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12If they include Grace Park, I'm in.
- dracostimpy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Hell yeah, open source television!
This is brilliant of the BSG/SciFi people... it gives us nerds something geeky to play with and stokes fan loyalty, and when we start YouTubeing our homemade vids, it's free advertising for BSG.
Nicely done, SciFi! - alecks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Some in-ship backgrounds would be nice for some greenscreen action...
- dracostimpy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Uh huh, yeah okay... I'm sure we'll all abide by that.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!!! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Nougat:
They don't want you to distribute it. They only want you to post it to THEIR site, not any other video site.
I guess that disproves your little theory, doesn't it. - aerospace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I may not make a video, but it looks like plenty of sound effects for a nice ringtone.
- bagofbeef, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6There's actually an ART to that handheld look there, Rush Limbaugh.
- kaidovak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6
screw stock clips sci-fi... give us the high poly zoic models!
I'd give them all the free advertisement they want for a shot at dissecting those meshes - AllnightChemist, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Dibs on Cops-spoof "Chromes."
- jcdickerson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is a great idea, though I think the prize ("we'll show your clip on TV!") seems cheap to me... Geez, if it's good enough to air, fly the winner(s) up to the set for pete's sake!
- jcdickerson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4...pauses...

"No." - delvach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Check the terms... they specifically prohibit posting your content to anywhere but their site.
- dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is what happens when you let the marketing people from a TV network set stuff like this up instead of the production company. The production company isn't using these ambient noise derived SFX. They should've gone back to the production company. The Theme Song sounds like it's too quiet, IMO. I wonder if someone just clipped these from finished episodes off the DVD's or something.
- delvach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ilyag - Nope, his(her) point still stands. They're getting fans to create content that will get aired on Sci-Fi, and all the related buzz that entails. As much as I like the show, this IS the same 'Sci Fi' network that's started disintegrating into a wrestling channel.
SuckItUp - ditto. - ericeman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It isn't, as people are pointing out, an all-access pass to their library of effects and clips, but for what it is it's kinda cool. In other words, it's definitely not the definitive source for BSG fan-film creators, but it's a small, yet legal, library for those who want to make videos akin to the example on that site.
- Wonderama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good to see some people (like Ron Moore) understand the Internets and the positive things it can do for them.
- Cybie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No kidding... models for the ships would be awesome.. some hi-res stills of the sets would be useful too.
- vcleniuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now BSG can sprout fan films like Star Wars has. Cool.
- jrtcs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Dammit allnightchemist! You you beat me to it!
Somehow, I doubt "Clones" has the same potential for humor. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Brilliant. Nicely done, sci-fi. Just think if Lucas would have thought of doing something like that for the Star Wars franchise. Fans would have produced entire movies for him and probably done an overall better job.
The next step would be actual character green screen shots or scene cut outs so you could put your own characters in different places from the franchise universe. Anytime people are involved the licensing gets wonky. Too bad, because you could have entire fan generated episodes.
Personally, I'd like to see what the fan base could come up with an open source production model.
Even this was a hugely cool and very smart thing for sci-fi. Talk about playing to your fan base. - super_spyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is sooooooo cool, I spent hours scrounging up small audio clips and video clips to make my own battle star galactica episode for my final for my video and 3d animation classes.
- RapidEye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The quality of the clips is great!!!
Need a phat pipe to pull them in - one of the files is over 300Megs! 8-) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1rdm's been net friendly for a while now, ever since his trek days.
- raferx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just wrote this up (http://www.webware.com/8301-1_109-9694881-2.html) but then I found this in the Terms:
PORTRAYAL ON WEB SITE OR PROGRAM: In and in connection with any site or program in which your Submission may be used, information of a personal, private, surprising, defamatory, disparaging, embarrassing or unfavorable nature, that may be factual or fictional, may be used and included regarding you and your Submission. YOU UNDERSTAND THAT THE DEPICTION AND PORTRAYAL OF YOU AND YOUR SUBMISSION IN CONNECTION WITH ANY WEB SITE OR PROGRAM MAY BE DISPARAGING, DEFAMATORY, EMBARRASSING OR OF AN OTHERWISE UNFAVORABLE NATURE, MAY EXPOSE YOU AND YOUR SUBMISSION TO PUBLIC RIDICULE, HUMILIATION OR CONDEMNATION, AND MAY PORTRAY YOU AND YOUR SUBMISSION IN A FALSE LIGHT. [caps theirs]
Really makes me want to play. I mean, ok, it sounds a lot like YouTube, but still. - FullMetalMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I still wish that they would release some similar stuff from Stargate: Atlantis!
- WeeklyGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1These sound effects are REALLY messy. There's ambient noise, some of them have parts of the musical score, and some clips like the centurion firing even has people talking. LAME.
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The thing is, NBC Universal, which owns SciFi, isn't so keen on BSG pornos making the rounds of the internet. If you've ever seen the ST or SW crap, you'll know why.
Fan porns are bad enough, but fan porns using actual stuff from the show could get them in legal or financial hot water (for reasons too complicated to explain here). - dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just know that for every Troops or Chad Vader: Day Shift Manager, there's 15 Star Wars Kid videos waiting to be seen.
- iAryeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So Say We All!
- JonathanKane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dang, that's awesome. why can't every scifi show do this? cheers!
- SuckItUp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Cool.. Now I hope someone can write better than the current season... The show went from cool to lame in one season. Sad, as it was such a great show.
- zadadka, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Lt. Martin Castillo ...pauses....

"Yes".
('cos that's how Edward James Olmos talks...although he shouted a couple of times in Blade Runner...) - unabonger, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Way to go SciFi channel!!!
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Wow....I want these kind of sound effects for Atlantis.....
- AdmiralAdama, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Yeah it's very cool. Seems very smart. Dradis, how's the dradis these days? Foggy?
- Tyr7BE, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Perfect timing, considering how boring this series has gotten in the last 10 eps or so. Hopefully someone else can deliver some kind of action.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Does it include lots of scowls, frowns, and raspy/inaudible voice acting a la Adama?
Don't get me wrong, I love the show...but it's almost too depressing sometimes. - Ahnteis, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Are you hoping they read Digg and will see your comment? :P
- Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4If you think their intent was to honor the audience and foster creativity, you are mistaken. They are getting the audience to create and distribute advertising for them at no charge. The facts that the audience feels honored and creativity is being fostered are fringe benefits, which make swallowing that pill of "becoming the unpaid marketer" easier.
- lava, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Ok, this is somewhat related. *SPOILER*
Did they really kill who I think they killed on BSG? - voodoom, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1uh oh, looks like sci-fi channel can't even handle the digg effect
- Punisher2K, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1Sounds effects are good but you'll need Michael J Fox to do the camera work to get the real BSG experience.
