He eats Cookies NOW, before when he was created in 1965 he was called Building Eating Monster in the first issue of Building Monsters in 1972. BEM was created to allow children to see Building Demolition to be safe and fun. it was also aimed to educate kids on how we as an society grow from putting up new buildings to make our economy stronger. After BEM and Sesame Street was brought to air in 1982 the BEM Monster was changed to Cookie Monster because the lazy prop guys did not make the buildings in time for destruction so they just had him eat what was in the breakroom which was....you guessed it! COOKIES!
