- spyda45, on 10/12/2007, -6/+242You've got to be kidding me! He's stepping down because the Boston Police Department can't tell the difference between Lite-Brights and bombs?? The stupidity of some people in this nation... (referring to Boston PD)
- WhiteRaven, on 10/12/2007, -6/+200God how I wish Turner and the Cartoon Network would stand up to those incompetent boobs in Boston.
- BGFeltenink, on 10/12/2007, -7/+117Bomb threats are serious. I don't remember a bomb threat though, so you're full of *****.
- super_spyder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+109bomb threats are extremely serious, but circuit boards depicting purple cartoon characters giving people the finger are quite comical
- othersomethings, on 10/12/2007, -2/+98I was really afraid something like this might happen, but at the same time I'm surprised. I kinda thought Cartoon Network was the network with balls.
- welvis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+90By the way, if you've ever wondered what kind of a man Jim Samples is read this:
http://www.worldscreen.com/interviewsarchive.php?filename=samples
After the tsunami hit in 2004 Mr. Samples helped launched a series of PSAs that talked to children about what happened, encouraging them to give to UNICEF and write letters to other children affected by the disaster. There's no way I would accept the resignation of someone so creative and professional. - dafragsta, on 10/12/2007, -11/+83That's right sheeple. Express your outrage. Anything that you fear must be destroyed, even if there's nothing to be afraid of. Some guy lost his job because police officers don't know the difference between a discreet bomb designed to blow up and a non-discreet sign with lights all over it. Next thing you know, Christmas wreaths will be mistaken for bombs.
- yocheo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+67@rochester
Well maybe if it were a marketing flop. This on the other hand is just proof of how ignorant the Boston government is; By giving Boston $2 million, Turner Broadcasting just allowed other idiots to seek recourse for trivial ***** such as this. - gardnmi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+53If anything he made the company money, he gave Aqua Teen Hunger Force Advertisement you can't buy.
- Kardde, on 10/12/2007, -4/+54He should be getting a raise or a promotion. The amount of publicity the situation has garnered for Aqua Teen Hunger Force is worth a LOT more than the $2m Turner paid to Boston officials.
- welvis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+46This is not right at all. Jim Samples is the guy responsible for getting Adult Swim on the air. It's one thing for Turner to bend over, but this is too far. This actually will end up affecting the content we've all grown so fond of. I've made this point before, but if the Boston reaction was truly justified then how can any city possibly function during false alarms. Extrapolate this out over the course of a year, say 1 or 2 of these over reactions in every major city and what are we left with? Shame on the leadership of Turner and the local Boston government.
- webdevil, on 10/12/2007, -6/+44This has to stop......he shouldn't of had to step down because of this. It wasn't his fault the city of Boston flipped out. I think something more needs to happen rather then expressing my disgust on a web site board. Some sort of mass email needs to be sent to the mayor of Boston telling him we don't approve of their response to the situation.
Mayor@cityofboston.gov - Domza, on 10/12/2007, -4/+33This is lame. This just shows that if you feign enough outrage you can get what ever you want. If anything this guy should have been made grand overlord rule of Cartoon Network.
- Desslok, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28But they did buy it...for $2 million
- WhiteRaven, on 10/12/2007, -6/+33Well... just because I think accuracy and logic are worth more than simplistic hyperbole, I'm going to correct you. It would make prefect sense to disguise a bomb as a highly visible but innocent seeming object. But, the world is always full of such things (visible, innocent objects) and they don't generate fear. Boston made a fool of itself but not because someone considered the possibility that these things that suddenly showed up might be dangerous. They just took it too far. Way, way too far.
- ogletree, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28This is so lame. There is no reason for Turner to pay that money or him to step down. They should fight the idiots in Boston. The citizens of Boston need to elect better officials. They have an incompetent administration. The proper response was for the city to apologize for reacting the way they did and implement some more training on when and when not to push the panic button. Whoever is in charge of the button needs to have never watched 24 or James Bond or anything with supervillains.
- et_nyc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26Ignignokt:"Quiet, Err. I'm transmitting rage."
- cisaza, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27In blatant abuse of the reply button - anyone have contact info we can use to write/e-mail and complain about this idiocy??
- IchiroBoston, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Write your opinion to Cartoon Network:

Cool! Does this mean we can all get 2M each for having to watch trailers for Assy McGee?
@broomett
If the Boston PD couldn't figure out that the devices were a hoax after the first one or two, and the fact that they'd been up for two weeks prior, they need to find a new line of work.
BTW, does anybody know if Boston actually had advance notice of this? NYC seemed to know about them. - Lucavious, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17The President should get a promotion? :)
- bugsy187, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Why did the man resign? The Boston police department overreacted in a paranoid way. Cartoon Network has nothing to apologize about.
Does this situation strike anyone else as crazy? - Lucavious, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15What the heck? He should have sued the mayor of Boston for causing widespread panic, if putting up lite brites is a crime consider my daughter an outlaw.
- whiledo, on 03/25/2009, -2/+14@technopundit
The entire rest of the country (and, for those out there who heard about it, the world) is laughing at Boston. It has hurt their public image. This could have a real impact on tourism dollars. Not sure the $2 million will really make up for that, though. I know I'll probably never think of Boston without thinking of the idiot comments that came out of their politicians mouths over this. Someone needs to let them know when you get pissed, you should try to avoid pissing on yourself. - dkm201, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Well then you must not care about Adult Swim, because this is the dude that had the balls to put all the weird ass awesome ***** on there.
- aquadoctorbob, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18The word "sheeple" pretty much ruined your perfectly valid point for me.
- bromanct, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12they were LITE BRITES
- aristoworks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13@welvis
one of the best comments I've seen on digg! - moofree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11My kidding is not pathetic!
- groovytrance, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Agreed, bomb threats are very serious.
Was this a bomb threat, though?
Seems more like some dumb asses saw a circuit board sticking out of a lite-brite and wigged.
*edit*
not sure why the comments didn't show up when i posted this, but looks like 3 people beat me to it... - jayfarer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I have a hunch that this is going to lead to tightening the leash on Adult Swim
- IchiroBoston, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11This is wrong, Boston f'ed up.... this guy should not step down.... how embarrassing
- bromanct, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9thanks for pointing that out. I wonder what good all the VULTURES in the local/cable news channels have done in their lives. Bunch of soul-eating mofo's.
- mustache, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Jim Samples is not only a great guy, but a great leader, and a guy with great vision. He's just the kinda guy you want to work for, and he has made Cartoon Network what it is today. And he is the reason a guy like me has a great job at a great network like Cartoon Network. Thank you Jim. I will miss you, and so will all of us at CN New Media.
- hollowex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Goodbye [adult swim] Hello eight hours of tom and jerry reruns
- WhereAmI, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I just don't get it and the other people like you.
Do you not see the [reply] in the lower right hand corner of the comments? - mustache, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Um, excuse me, but ***** you. Jim Samples is the reason I have a job at a great place like Cartoon Network, he made it the success it is today. Have a little respect for peoples livelihoods.
- Fox318, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8They lost $2 million and they may make $100 million because of this incident, I don't see he deal here.
- rc_collins, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6You've got to be kidding me! He's stepping down because the Boston Police Department can't tell the difference between Lite-Brights and bombs?? The stupidity of some people in this nation... (referring to Boston PD)
- danakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Does this mean that shows like "Tom Goes to the Mayor," "12 oz Mouse" and "Tim and Eric" won't be greenlit from now on?
- dn11, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@broomet
first of all, ***** YOU. Second let me remind you that this same marketing campaign was carried out in some 10 other cities. In no other case did the police find the need to convene on the light brights with bomb squads, shut down major roadways, and cause mass hysteria. The Boston PD ***** up, that's all there is to it. The Chief of police needs to be fired. You seriously think people are defending cartoon network only because they like the show? I'd never even heard of it, but I know a messed up situation when I see it. - welvis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Agreed, thanks for finding this. And to echo something hinted at above, let's say we all go see this thing 5 or 6 times each when it hits theaters. That would be a nice cap to this story to have ATHF hit #1 after all this garbage.
- Akronos, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Agreed. This is ridiculous.
- joaob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not to mention the "campaign" and publicity completely failed to do anything to the ratings.
He should have been fired before he could resign. - Mechmuertos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My conspiracy theory...in actuality he did not resign over the "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" ad campaign...but rather the canceling of "Justice League Unlimited" and replacing it with "Boboboboo". Constantly waking up in the middle of the night covered in a cold sweat, unable to look at his wife or children or himself in the mirror.
- Razster, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I'll be landing in Boston this coming Sunday.
With me I will be bringing some ATHF Stickers I bought from Hot Topics and sticking them all over everything and anything I can.
BOMBS baby! They're Bombs! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5That sounds plausible. Where did you hear this?
- Jujubes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7My understanding of the situation is the Boston officials knew these things weren't bombs, but had received a few reports about them and decided to remove them as a training exercise for first responders. Well, the exercise went horribly, horribly wrong so the local government decided to save face by blaming everyone else by calling it as a terrorist hoax. The media got a hold of it and all sorts of stupid broke loose.
The entire situation is dumb and the people of Boston should be ashamed. Unfortunately I seriously doubt the elected officials will feel any sort of backlash from this incident. - krugzilla, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4As repulsive as this situation is, I must admit it was bad judgment to place these devices on bridges. Most of them were high out of reach so they could not be examined easily to discover they were harmless. These are paranoid times we live in and I am not surprised at all about such a reaction. It really sucks but I think they should have known better.
- mille716, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can anyone from Boston tell us how the Boston media is playing this situation now?
I know they're primarily responsible for the hype in the first place but have they gotten their senses back after a few weeks?
Is it just a select few media figures that are upset or is it generally all of them? -
