- a7bat, on 10/11/2007, -2/+122Blame the Australian networks as they screw over their audience. Aussie networks tend to run overtime or start the shows early and sometimes not even run shows in order. Other times, they'll show an episode and then you have to wait a week or month(s) to see the next one. And sometimes they'll give other shows more priority, such as reality shows, so they air more of it than scheduled shows. So they're basically screwing themselves and the people won't take it. Thank goodness!
- Crash1337, on 10/11/2007, -1/+91Agree with you totally a7bat, aussie tv networks are hopeless with US tv shows... I BT most of my TV shows because the delay that we have here is crazy. At one stage i think we were over 2 season's behind in Smallville while channel 9 was airing it. Atleast when channel 10 picked it up they started showing it twice a week just to catch up, they also gave it some good advertisement to help the show along.
But thats only good if the show is even on here in Australia, i watch alot of stuff that doesnt even get aired here.
And most of the stuff on here that we get is bloody reality TV crap or gameshows. So we only really get a handful of shows to watch, and when we do get them, we are usually a season behind. Im sticking to BT.
Check out channel 7 for tonight:
6pm - Seven News (News and current affairs)
6.30pm - Today Tonight (News and current affairs)
7pm - Home and Away (Aussie soap)
7.30pm - Last Chance Learners (Aussie people that can't drive)
8pm - Police Files - Unlocked (....People doing stupid things to cops)
8.30pm - It Runs in the Family (4 year old movie)
10.50pm - 24 (Jack's back!!!)
Look at the tv guide for tonight....THATS WHY WE ARE DOWNLOADING OUR SHOWS!!!! - dyckdownunder, on 10/11/2007, -1/+46Except the issue here is that although our TV is behind a season or three...our internet still isn't up to scratch either...we're screwed both ways.
- Gizza, on 10/11/2007, -1/+44@crash1337 (#7157082)
He he, try a typical channel 10 night.
6pm: The Simpsons, will be a old ep thats been repeated 100 times already
6.30pm: Neighbours, crap soap
7pm: Big Brother, crap
7.30pm; Big Brother Friday Night Live, more crap
9.30pm: The Most Expensive Celebrity Divorces, come on, WTF!
10.30pm: Big Brother Up-Late, you gotta be ***** me, more of this crap. - philvell, on 10/11/2007, -0/+37i know why i torrent Channel 10 material, every time i see another big brother ad, i want to tear my eyes out with teaspoons.
- renegade334, on 10/11/2007, -3/+39@crash1337
What about Spicks and Specks? and The Chaser's War On Everything?
They're world premieres of the episodes...
And House and Heroes are on too.
Too bad i've already seen them... even though they aren't repeats...
Come on Aussie T.V networks, get your act together, you know why your ratings are low!
because you are behind so many seasons!!!!
BTW, is there any idea of IF/WHEN Apple will release t.v. shows to aussies through iTunes? - andrewcsayer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+30At least *one* show on Aussie TV promotes downloading it's vodcast
*cough* The Chaser's War On Everything* cough
Also may be why they are hitting the ratings jackpot. Just a thought.... - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+25What about A ***** Current Affair? ***** that show.
- andrewcsayer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+211 word.
Quizmania. - aussieNickuss, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22Vote Labor in October (or is it November). Ruddy will sort us out.
- Lochie, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23I for one am not interested in even watching shows on Television. I much rather downloading them so I can watch them in my own time. I don't want to be constricted to, "Oh I need to be home to watch so and so at 7:30 tonight!"
- chrisc801, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19Channel BT= Up to Date shows, Less noisy HD, No commercials, On Demand
Australian Channels= 6 months old shows, Horrible HD (especially channel 7), Commericals, Any time the channel feels like airing it
Hmm i wonder which one i'll choose - Gondolieri, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18Interestingly you can only download the chaser from within Australia. Which seems strange to me as people overseas have no chance to watch it anyway.
Perhaps because it's a government funded broadcaster, it's responsible for serving to people in Australia regardless of whether they have a TV or not (I don't), but not overseas watchers. - Ranneko, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18We're responsible for 20% of BT usage? Awesome!
But how do they determine that? Random samplings of traffic and geolocation on the IPs?
Spying on various trackers? - cheersrazer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18A fair bit ABC & SBS content can be found online
- http://www20.sbs.com.au/podcasting/
- http://www.abc.net.au/services/podcasting/ - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17And how many fat shows do we need? The Biggest Loser, Teen Fat Camp, The Biggest, Fattest, Most Pustulent ***** Ever. Give us a ***** break!
Also, I hate the Channel Ten voice overs for their drama shows "A SHOCKING SECRET" "THRILLING DRAMA" "BEST EPISODE THIS SEASON". How cliche can they get? - MackPrime, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18I only torrent shows that i know i will eventually get to watch at some point. BT is my DVR ... from the FUTURE.
Seriously, Scrubs is on at 11:30 at night, 6 episodes behind. ***** that. - BeefBaron, on 10/11/2007, -0/+17Tonight on A Current Affair:
Shonky car dealer rips off so and so!
Shonky landlord rips off so and so!
Shonky builder rips off so and so!
All that and much less tonight, on ACA. - tinman730, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16Aussie TV networks couldn't schedule a 1 hour show properly let alone a whole line up. Its time for them to wake or they will sleep with the fishes.
- lcarsdeveloper, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16Wow, an entire digg story full of comments I actually agree with!
I've been complaining about Big Brother since day 1, I spend 6 months every year screaming abuse at my TV because they're running late, and it means I'm going to miss 15 minutes of a show on a different channel because they now overlap. Yeah I know, use a VCR, but still it's the principle of the thing.
Here's the list of TV shows I watch:
Mythbusters (repeats at the moment, know them all backwards)
South Park (repeats also, but good for a laugh)
The Simpsons (new episodes occasionally on Tuesdays, but mostly repeats)
Spicks & Specks and The Chaser (first run, no commercials, and if I miss the Chaser I can download the entire episode)
Law & Order: Criminal Intent (alternates between new and old episodes)
That's about it.
Here's a translation of two very common Australian TV phrases you'll hear:
"Special 2 hour movie length episode!" - A new episode, followed by a repeat of an old one
"World Premiere Movie" - A very lame Australian movie that nobody ever saw in the cinemas
Channel 7 - Every show they have is either crap, or a good show in a crappy timeslot (Family Guy, Atlantis)
Channel 9 - Never anything on
Channel 10 - The Simpsons, Law & Order, NCIS. I respect them for reviving Futurama in Australia, but I despise them for reality TV and constant viral marketing. Anyone remember the David Tench campaigns? And what about "6:30 will change everything". Now they've got Torchwood (Dr Who spinoff series), but the promos make it look like a complete cliche. I even remember the 2 months of advertising for NCIS, making it sound like some secret government agency, "above the law" I think was used when really they're Navy cops.
ABC - Wednesday nights are alright, and I'm looking forward to Dr Who returning
SBS - Mondays are alright for entertainment, but I'm not impressed they had to resort to showing commercials. And what's with saying South Park is on at 8:30pm, but running 15 minute episodes of "The Movie Show" at 8:30 and starting South Park at 8:45?
I downloaded all my Stargate episodes, and also NCIS. I buy those shows on DVD to support the studios and the actors, but I don't watch them here. I've basically boycotted Channel 7 because of an unpleasant incident a few years ago. They said Stargate was on at 11:30pm, so I dimmed the lights, made a coffee and got comfortable at 11:20pm waiting for it. I waited and waited, and it wasn't on. So I called them (I have them on speed dial) and they said it was on at 8:30pm! I got very upset, but they said they couldn't help me out, and that if I'd been watching their commercials this week I'd know they had changed the timeslot! It took 3 years for me to see that episode. Also they cut dialog out of an episode because it referred to Atlantis, which wasn't due to be aired until months later.
Wow that rant came out a lot longer than I expected, but this is a particularly sore point for me. - Gizza, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16@Ranneko (#7159826)
"According to piracy tracking site Envisional’s recent studies, Australians are the greatest BitTorrent users per capita in the world. Despite making up only 0.3 % of the world’s population, Australians account for 20% of BitTorrent traffic."
AUSSIE! AUSSIE! AUSSIE! - 23MAL, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15And who said there were no Aussies on Digg....
- nipuL, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15I recently setup up a mythtv box so we could record shows, but as said australian tv scheduling it appauling, it makes using xmltv almost pointless.
Plus everything on TV is either crap or Simpsons reruns. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15I agree with you a7bat
Aussie TV is terrible. The amount of game shows is ridiculous. Also who else is sick of sitting down during dinner ( the only time to relax with the girlfriend at night ) only to watch Home and Away, man that show does MY HEAD IN.
Good job that the networks are suffering. Its their own bloody fault. - DirtySnachez, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15I totally agree with all above points, Aussie networks are pure rubbish atm.
The fact we are required by law to have ~30% locally produced content (hence H&A, Neighbours and all the dodgy game shows)
If we aired the 'big' shows at the same time as the US, the need to download would be effectively squashed, its not rocket science. I finished watching the US version of Lost Season3 around two months ago. Tonights ep is just about to bring Juliette to the camp. That's fkn lame that there's an 8 week difference.
Oh yeah, and we cant TIVO ***** either cause the networks don't support EPG / EKG, and tivo boxes aren't even readily available for sale. I know Chan 9 actually copyrights their program guide, so if you want to see whats on 9 in a week or so.. and you don't have a monthly Chan 9 guide, your SOL.
And TV-over-IP is useless too, cause the maximum speed available for residential 'broadband' is ADSL, and usually that's capped at around 20GB / mth
For ***** sake, someone fix our country. - sathias, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14It amazes me that we make up so much of the BT traffic when pretty much all Aussies have download limits on their Broadband.
- EochaidRiata, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Networks need to wake up and realize that you can't stagger the release of episodes months and years apart in different countries. People are not going to wait on your archaic provincial distribution when we can grab Life On Mars, Top Gear and Trailer Park Boys the same day they air in their original countries. Stop whining about the Internet (it is not going away) and fix the problem.
- stonedgeek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+12I had to digg this because I've been downloading 95% of tv shows I watch for over 2 years now for the following reasons.
a) I live in Palmyra, near the middle of Perth metro area, and I still can't get good reception. It just can't compare to dvd quality rips on the bt sites.
b) The weeks or months delays that about 20 other people have mentioned on this thread so far.
c) High quality shows that I like, ie: Sopranos, Firefly, Buffy, (there's more but I can't think of them right now) are on at 10:30pm or later and get zero advertising. Prime-time is a *****-fest of crappy Oz-dramas (I'm looking at you McLeod's Daughters), game shows, reality shows (please, no more big brother), and blatantly biased current affairs programs, which are advertised everywhere.
d) Some of the best shows I've seen in years have never made it to air (did Arrested Development make it?)
e) ABC cancelled one of their highest rating shows (The Glass House) because it was critical of the government, and the Chasers War on Everything spent the whole of it's first year in the worst timeslot imaginable (for it's demographic), after 11pm on friday nights for presumably the same reason. I suppose they should still get points for funding these shows though.
f) The obvious advantages of the net. No ads, watch when I want, watching five or six episodes in a row when I have a couple of hours to spare, pause & rewind.
g) I'm not a big sports fan, so it sucks on weekends when 4 channels out of 5 have football on.
I have to give high marks to SBS though. It's an absolutely world class network with great shows from Australia, US and the rest of the world.
I know that advertising is the reason we get high quality shows so I would be more than happy to watch a few ads if I could download free tv. That being said, I'd rather trade my obcene isp bill (and extra charges for passing the download limit) for a reasonable subscription fee, provided I can download whatever I want. When you look at it that way, there's plenty of $ to go around for all the media providers. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11You know it's not the consumers fault that networks aren't adapting to tech changes. Update your business model or slowly die off like the rest of the old networks.
- avisotin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11John Howard has serious problems in understanding Australia's growing and undernourished technology market. He seems to think the Australian population hasn't grown in 20 years and that maybe a little investment in, say, broadband upgrades, would go a long way.
Oh, wait, the government sold country's biggest ISP a while back under claims of fraud and corruption. Bugger. - estvir, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Sorry to double post but do you want to know is on RIGHT NOW on A Current Affair ? A story about how a lady never returned a video for whatever reason 2 years ago and she now has a bill in the thousands. Depressingly enough, this is one of the more interesting stories on ACA.
Quite an epic story, I hope someone buys the rights and writes a novel and possibly get Michael Bay to direct a trilogy. - thebru, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12I'm ashamed to say I once called Hotdogs.
He scammed me of 50c! - aussieNickuss, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11Scrubs is more than 6 eps behind. I watched an episode 2 weeks ago....it was from season 5. Season 6 has finished airing in the US.
Pathetic. - chingy1788, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10yeah go Ruddy
Fibre optic line through Aussie land! - Crash1337, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Just to give you an idea.....

OZ - Last episode was #18 (Will end towards the end of July)
About 4 months difference
Smallville :-
US - Final Season Episode #22 Aired May 17th
OZ - Last episode was #4 Aired on March 17th...(Supposed to be back around December 2007!!!! Will finish around march 2008)
About 10 months difference - fugazied, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Its just an insult to a normal persons intelligence. As is most of what these channels produce now. The current affairs shows packed with sensationalist rubbish (ACA, and often 60 minutes), the moronic big brother and quizmania, the xenophobic customs and police reality shows, donald trump reality tv, plastic surgery shows, generic homemakers show.
Its pretty sad that many Autralians watch this crud nightly. Bit-torrent and quality TV (deadwood, studio 60, 30 rock, the chaser + some abc shows) for the win! - positron, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9You can download Chaser's anywhere in the world. I'm American and I watch it religiously. It may not be legal, but it happens. Thanks to BT, and wonderful uploaders worldwide, I watch more TV from the UK, Australia, Japan, etc. than I do American TV. Good thing too because, aside from HBO and Showtime, most American shows are crap.
- stolenisotope1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9If we didn't have them pesky download limits, do you reckon we would take like 50% of the BT pie?
- sathias, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9@brucerchapman
I was wondering the same thing. I guess we are in a similar situation when we watch The Daily Show, to a degree. - Ranneko, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8@Gondolieri: Most places work like that with shows. To save on bandwidth costs mostly.
- wisie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8I'm amazed entourage hasn't been shown in Australia yet. Ahh well it seems TV isn't the only disadvantaged thing in Australia just look at our broadband.
- Gizza, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8@ogore (#7159944)
Hehe, I remember one a while back. One of the shows was saying that Australia was enjoying a baby boom, while the other was complaining that Perth city is starting to sprawl out too far because too many new suburbs are getting built. Are we enjoying our population increasing or not? - CrazyChair, on 07/21/2008, -0/+8Oh my god, if they'd stop showing complete utter trash like Big Brother 24/7, we may start watching Free-To-Air again. When they stop catering JUST to the morons who can't get enough of this reality TV garbage and start showing episodes from real shows that aren't 6 months to a year old (at a decent hour too), they may prevent people from downloading it.
Ugh... Someone fix our networks. - ogore, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7There like fighting animals. I was flicking through channels and ACA was defending a 6 yr old kid accused of sexual assault (how would he no what sex is) and Today tonight wanted him locked up at exactly the same time, and remember Wawah
- estvir, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7> What about A ***** Current Affair? ***** that show.
Not only does the show suck but I'm so damn sick of Tracy Grimshaw. - estvir, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Channel 7/9/10 just suck, more or less. Everything I actually want to watch is either not shown (Like The Office) or is horribly out of date compared to the rest of the world (Like Heroes).
The only time I turn the TV on is for M*A*S*H at 5PM when I get home from work, the occasional movie or soccer game on SBS.
Stop putting out rubbish (Big Brother.. for the love of all that is good, please stop showing a hundred ads Channel 10), keep at least close to being up to date with countries like America with big shows like Heroes and in general just pick up your act and I might start watching again. - Narwaffle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7@poedguy
Don't get me started on Australian internet. Sure, what Telstra is making me pay and what the download/upload speed I get is embarrassingly slow, so I should switch ISPs. Problem is, I can't. Even though I live in an area from which I can *see* the skyline of Brisbane city, which is only about 5 kilometres away, the best I can get is ADSL. While it's gotten better (recently upped the speed to 8mbps), it's really trivial as to why I can't get cable *or* ADSL2. The reason really comes down to one thing - Telstra was half-assed about wiring the area up, and they can't do anything about it. This also means I can't get cable TV without paying a ridiculous amount of money for a satellite. - poedguy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8@aussieNickuss (#7159923)
You should really switch from Telstra to ANY other provider. No-one should ever count uploads towards a user's quota, AFAIK Telstra is the only company in Australia that does this. I to am on iiNet getting 24mbit with 80gb/month downloads for $89.95/month. - estvir, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I think I might actually vote for him because of his plans to finally get decent internet in Australia and because he's kind of amusing when he's on the radio shows.
And I'm sick of John Howard's eyebrows. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I watch just a single hour of TV a week now. Well, I say 1 hour, but its all DVR'ed so I can skip the ads with a single click of the remote.
EVERYTHING else is either bought on DVD (minority) or downloaded via BT from the UK or US.
Australian made shows generally suck ass, and those frigging 'lets copy the US' reality shows are even worse!
The ONLY way I'd ever watch Big Brother on a regular basis was if they released a live panther into the house every 5 days.
That'd be frigging sweet!!
Once you've used BT its VERY hard to go back to regular TV broadcasts. Sure, the quality is a bit better, but when more than 1/3 of most programming is advertisements I'm simply not going to watch it!
A recent article I read gave some interesting rundowns of how the networks make their money:
* A typical US show (Desperate Housewives for instance) costs an aussie network between $45,000 and $50,000.
* Each 'hour' of programming has between 18 and 20 minutes of advertising.
* Thats around 40 commercials (including 10 or so network and 'whats next' adverts).
* Each 30 seconds of commercials is sold for upwards of $13,000, sometimes as much as $25,000 in a prime-time show
(lets assume $18,000 for a nice average).
So, for a ***** $45,000 cost to a network for 'Housewives' they rake in almost $540,000 in advertising revenue (for 30 adverts per hour).
Thats a profit of almost 1/2 a million for one hour of ***** US bought programming!
http://fifthestate.rmit.edu.au/the-cost-of-tv-advertising-.php
With such obscene profit margins as that the networks are now reaping what they have sowed! They all deserve to crash and burn if they keep treating their audience like this! -
