- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -6/+99why do so many people find it so very necessary to tell us about words they misread in articles? I swear, every story on Digg has some commenter saying something like:
"Steve Jobs? I thought it said Steve Boobs there for a second"
"This story is about Tampa? I'm sorry, I read Tampax"
"OMG, for a second there I thought it said 'Bill Gates Sucks *****' instead of saying 'Bill Gates Plays Golf'"
People, we are sorry you are dyslexic, but do you really need to tell it to the entire world? - aliengoods, on 10/12/2007, -14/+78After seeing the winners, how could anyone believe its a talent competition?
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -3/+60yeah, I mean, Taylor Hicks and Rueben Stuttard's careers are just taking off like a jet
- reject, on 10/12/2007, -2/+59My friend auditioned, and pretty much said they look for the worst, or the most easily liked.
- spencewah, on 10/12/2007, -1/+56A "tell all" from someone who didn't make it past the first cut?
- phronko, on 10/12/2007, -2/+55Hah! For a minute there I thought you said "Tom Cruise is gay", instead of "dyslexic"
- huckmank, on 10/12/2007, -1/+38"If she sings as bad as she writes I can EMPHASIZE..."
Oh, the ironing. - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -3/+36and lets not forget all the Oscar and Golden Globe nods for "From Justin to Kelly"...
- fowleryo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31auditioner's band: http://www.myspace.com/naughtybird
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+37I believe you have mistaken "haters" for people with common sense.
- JohnClay, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27Am I the only one that finds it a bit ironic that Fox News is reporting what amounts to a negative review of a Fox show?
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24Come on, did anybody honestly think that Simon, Randy and Paula sit and watch millions of hopefuls audition? If they gave every person a 2 minute or so chance like they portray on the show, they would have to watch people audition 24/7 for weeks
- headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -17/+33"yeah, I mean, Taylor Hicks and Rueben Stuttard's careers are just taking off like a jet"
Nope, they're not. But Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood have both won enough awards to make up for the losers. - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19sweeping generalizations...comment buried as lame and shortsighted
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17aliengoods..if you think that Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood are not talented, you are seriously nuts. You may not like their kind of music, but that does not make you any better than people that do.
- Bleeblaow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Sorry, but millions of people are talented singers, which is what American Idol is about. Personally, I don't care how great somebody sounds singing somebody else's music.
I'd rather listen to people who write their own good music. And you can say whatever you want about previous American Idol's jumpstarting their own careers and writing their own music; but it all sucks. I'm not intrigued by recycled music that has to do with "love" or "fun." I'm just not interested in music with unoriginal lyrical content. It's not talent. It's *****. - mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15"Days later, my band Naughty Bird performed at a local club and I felt a deep sense of relief — to sing our own songs in that cramped, dark place, on our own terms, to loud applause."
That right there is the biggest deterrent any self-respecting musician would have to auditioning on American Idol. A guy that used to be in a band of mine auditioned, he has a great voice, plays saxophone, good guy. Didn't make it. This guy was offered a full ride to Syracuse on his vocal ability alone. Then my friends asked me if I would ever try out. Without even thinking I said "absolutely not". The reason? Even if you win, you lose. You're under the thumb of Simon Cowell and a large record label that make you something you may not want to be. "Big Music" is dead. Indie labels and artists are slowly gaining momentum and attention. As for getting rich at it, well, it's never really been about that for most of the musicians I know. It's about rocking your heart out in a local club, to thunderous applause of the crowd. - jackhole, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14It was a chilly morning in August.
- SoxFanNH, on 10/12/2007, -9/+18Crappy show who cares...
- Rell812, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Well, it's pretty obvious they go through preliminary screenings. They've even said so on the show.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9So, this is just another whinefest from someone who wasn't good enough (or bad enough) to make it to the judges, and this is news?
LOTS of local bands think they are so great because the same 100 (or less) go see them at a club. And most of them are pure crap. Something tells me that Naughty Bird falls squarely into this category.
As far as this being negative toward AI, how? It is one loser's bithcing about it. Everyone knows that there is a screening process. there is simply no way that Simon, Randy and Paula could see everyone that shows up. There is no enough time in the 2 days to do that. Even if they spent 15 hours a day, and each audition took 45 seconds (from the time one sings until the time the next one sings), they could see 2400 people in two days. (And 15 hours without a break in not happening, nor is 45 seconds between them) So they obviously MUST screen about a good 90% or more beforehand, with several sets of preliminary judges.
It is also no secret that the shows knows what they are doing when they put on the bad auditions. Every yer many fans say "I am not getting involved next year." then, they tell themsevles they will just watch the auditions just to laugh at the bad ones. And by the time that is over, they realize that they have grown attached to one of the good singers, and despite their best intentions, they are hooked for one more year. there is a reason why this is the only reality show that INCREASES its ratings every single season. - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9because I'm sure similar talent shows in other countries only showcase the best singers
- thesparrowband, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@headzoo, yeah i dont like those people either, but the posts above aren't them. they're just people who recognize idol for what it is.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7the last thing these people are capable of telling is reality
- debney, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12All the winners have been able to sing. Yeah it's about ratings, but the people on that show can sing and fit what the directors want for the most part... Pop Singers.
And that "naughtybird" indie rock, garage band, it's cool because no one else listens to it crap... is sooooo played out. Whoopdy effin do.
If you can sing you get through, obviously that person couldn't sing well enough. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Yeah...I am sure Chris Daughtry is just PISSED that he chose to go on American Idol. Now instea of 100 cheering fans, he has almost a million aand a half buying his CD (expected to top 2.5 by the end of its run) and he is singing the same music that he always sang.
- kingatrock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7you're kidding you mean 3 judges dont sit through 50,000 auditions every year within a few weeks? Waahhh you suck, get over it, also the writing was boring and had too much to prove. Use the other door on ur way out.
- acff, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9wow, i hate her overdone vibratos
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6How does this article imply that the show is not real? She REALly auditioned, and REALly wasn'tgood enough to make it to the next round.
- EochaidRiata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The story is from the Associated Press. It is probably an automated feed.
- RealityCheque, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7The 37 million or so that watch it.
Though you may not care, a vast majority of people do...just saying. - strangeless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4its a vast majority of the amount of people (estimated) who watch tv.
- lysdexia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5She can't sing for *****, her band is rank-rotten and she's a grade-A minger into the bargain. I really don't understand why she didn't make it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4As they have started to show entire stadiums full of people it would really take a pretty dim wit to think Paula, Randy and Simon are listening to them all.
- lcohiomatty86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3in the beginning they will pick the worst and the best for the TV program, ALOT of people watch the show to laugh at the horible singers, but remember.. people vote for those that continue on in the show (whether that is fair or biased voting on FOX's part is another story...) so in the end the shows "customers" get to pick the winners... not the network.
- jackhole, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I have lived there. And I've lived up north. That's not the only reason I picked that line:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/It_was_a_dark_and_stormy_night - Darthmalt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Calling the "Judges" producers may have been giving them to much credit. As 20 somethings they probably aren't very high up the totem pole and after all they did get stuck listening to people with questionable talent sing for hours on end.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3While it is a behind-the-scenes look I don't really see how it's negative. They haven't hid the fact that there are preliminary auditions, and they've occasionally shown brief clips and mentioned as much on the show. If anybody is naive enough to believe what you see on TV is representative of the auditioning process in its entirety that is their problem--not Fox's.
- thejokell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So does the original make England look stupid?
- dokbeast7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Either that or the reality shown is a reality so scary, so terrible, that we are in denial about it.
- myheaditches, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yah, and every person in UK loves Benny Hill, and I am led to believe every person in the UK is stupid. Oh wait, that's terrible logic.
- SirNoobius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@jackhole
if you lived here you would know that it's freezing (relatively speaking) in the morning everyday no matter what time of the year it is. - mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@broomett
And how much revenue is he getting from those CDs? How much did he have to fight to write his own music, if he even does write his own music? I like the guy but Wayne Kirkpatrick writes a lot of what you listen to with very little input from the artists and there tons of others like him. Actually if any of you are thinking about trying to make money in music, become professional songwriters for a label, you'll make out like a bandit off of the royalties. Sorry to burst your bubble, but what you believed to be true, is in fact a giant hoax invented to get you to spend your money.
By the way, your comment smacks of a PR rep for a record company. Do you work for one? I don't know many that follow the BB charts that closely. - XBassGuitarX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4"If she sings as bad as she writes I can EMPHASIZE..."
And I just CAN'T get over this. - distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thank you for bringing some common sense in to drown out the emotionalism.
- whistlerpro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yep, youre either terribly bad, really good or an odd wildcard - average, good, or mildly good don't cut it, unfortunately.
- strangeless, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3get over yourself.
- SakisRakis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It is so rare to find an American Idol/Pop Music fanboy such as yourself broomett.
- N080dy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!
- mjpatey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So American Idol pre-screens contestants. Is this somehow damning? Believe me, I understand disliking the show, but to say that pre-screening contestants invalidates (or further invalidates) it is silly.
Can you imagine if the on-camera judges had to screen 20-30,000 contestants individually at each location? It couldn't work.
Oh, @ Darthmalt... "producer" is a more common title than it used to be, and is increasingly given to entry-level kids right out of college, so it's probably correct here. If not, they're probably just called "talent screeners" and will soon be producers somewhere. -
