- DeskFlyer, on 05/28/2008, -4/+54Phil Hartman was superb on SNL. RIP.
- kjames00, on 05/28/2008, -4/+50I totally forgot that Chris Farley was the original Shrek
- Matrixsta, on 05/29/2008, -3/+42Man do I miss Chris Farley...
- darkoline, on 05/28/2008, -5/+38I can't believe it was ten years ago. So sad!
- negativenancy, on 05/29/2008, -1/+34RIP Troy McClure
- aflaks, on 05/29/2008, -5/+34Rip Hartman. The simpsons havnt been the same without you.
- sinisterouge, on 05/29/2008, -1/+30you'd think a list like this would at least have a picture of each person
- Miamisun, on 05/29/2008, -2/+30Most tragic was Phil Hartman....Did not see that coming
- Kajico, on 05/29/2008, -3/+25I miss Phil, he was hilarious and made SNL great. If only Andy Dick had overdosed and killed himself instead of ***** up Phil's wife a great tragedy would have been adverted.
- cnot3, on 05/29/2008, -1/+22Chris Farley is livin' in a van down by the river in Heaven now.
- wordfan, on 05/29/2008, -4/+24I want to see a list of 7 tragic non-deaths from SNL alums. Number one, Rob Scneider.
- Owwmykneecap, on 05/29/2008, -1/+20Phil Hartman lives on within Billy West's Zapp Brannigan.
- scotticus, on 05/29/2008, -1/+19The curse only applies to funny cast members.
- ZepJefferson, on 05/28/2008, -2/+18For the curious, the "most notorious obscenity on live television" mentioned in the post that was pretty much the final nail of Charles Rocket's SNL career.
When asked by that night's guest host, Charlene Tilton, at the show-ending cast gathering what it was like to get shot (Rocket had been 'shot' earlier that night during a parody of the Who Shot J.R. episode of Dallas), still in character Rocket replied: "Oh, man, it's the first time I've ever been shot in my life. I'd like to know who ***** did it."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Rocket#Saturd ... - TheGreatBelow, on 05/29/2008, -2/+17God damn I miss the '90s.
- Wootstapler, on 05/29/2008, -1/+15R.I.P. Chris Farley. AKA Beverly Hills Ninja, Tommy Callahan, Mike Donelly ect...
- morphinapg, on 05/29/2008, -0/+12It would be cool if they had a second audio track on a Shrek DVD/Blu-ray including all of Chris Farley's recorded lines.
- nan0bug00, on 05/29/2008, -0/+11I read an interview with Artie Lange in Playboy once that pretty much spelled out what causes guys like Farley and Belushi to die.
They're usually not the most attractive guys. Their humor is usually a way to cover up their insecurities and lack of charisma, to get others to like them, but inside they're not having as much fun as it looks. They are driven by a real need to be accepted by others usually because they feel without the attention they have no self worth.
Then you get these guys who start building a reputation for hard partying and being the life of the party, and then you mix that with the aforementioned insecurities and need for acceptance. They do more and more drugs, mix stuff, party harder and longer than everyone else for the same reason that they make jokes at their own expense.
When they finally do realize that they need to quit because it starts affecting their health, or their careers, or their relationships with their friends and family, they're stars and everywhere they go they have people sticking it in their face 24/7. And they still have that internal drive and desire to be accepted, so they are naturally weak to peer pressure.
Artie Lange was more specific about it, but that's the general summary anyway. And it's ***** sad. These were all really talented guys. - FatLoser, on 05/29/2008, -6/+16I'm being absolutely serious here. I ***** cried until it hurt when I heard that Phil Hartman died. I don't know what it was about him, but he seemed so genuine and decent.
When Chris Farley died I was shocked, because he was bigger than life (though I guess it shouldn't have come as too much of a surprise given his weight issues and because he was a coke fiend), but it didn't really shake me like Phil's death did. I guess the fact that Phil's wife offed him and left behind orphaned children is what really made it so much more tragic than Farley's passing.
RIP to both of them. - negativenancy, on 05/29/2008, -2/+12You obviously don't know who Andy Dick is.
- elizabethb221, on 05/29/2008, -0/+9Phil Hartman :( :( :( :( :( :(
(don't hate the frownies, you know they're well deserved) - aflaks, on 05/29/2008, -0/+8Yet another reason why Futurama Rocks
- rheaume, on 05/29/2008, -0/+8I guess if you saw Andy Dick getting Phil's wife back into cocaine right before she went psycho and shot him, you might have seen it coming.
- Dorepoll, on 05/29/2008, -1/+8Gilda Radner will always be one of the funniest women in showbiz. In an industry where males dominate, and women struggle to keep up, she was up there with the best of them. She made jumping into a wall look so good.
- eclectro, on 05/29/2008, -1/+6Phil Hartman makes a joke about not coming back at the end of the final "titanic" episode of News Radio. I think it since has been edited out. Did anyone else catch it?
- JustinNoland, on 05/29/2008, -1/+6All on one page? Unbelievable!
- skeletorcares, on 05/29/2008, -3/+8Now you're just milking it. Babyman, BURY.
- spc4, on 05/29/2008, -3/+7Not to sounnd insensitive or sarcastic, but Phill Hartmen and Andy Kaufman is the only one I would call tragic. John Belushi & Chris Farley just did too meny drugs. The rest of them died after they were off the show from ntural causes.
- SteveIsTheDude, on 05/29/2008, -0/+4Hartman was great. You know, he co-wrote Pee Wees Big Adventure, a ***** HILARIOUS movie.... Hartman was great, and his words are as true now as they were in his time...
- blackrage, on 05/29/2008, -4/+8Obligatory..."neither did he"
I'm sorry Phil, I'm Sorry. I loved you man... But that ***** served me up a softball.
*Pours a little out for his homie Phil and rubs his NEWSRADIO 4EVER tattoo* - Joeyrev, on 05/29/2008, -0/+4It's all relative to when you're growing up. I remember loving the 90's SNL with Farley and Sandler and Chris Rock, while older members of my family told me it was terrible, and nothing compared to the early Belushi days. Now I tell my younger sister the same thing about today's SNL.
- TheAkolyte, on 05/29/2008, -0/+4I don't blame Farley, though. Life gets rough, and that ***** is tough.
- Deadpixel1221, on 05/29/2008, -0/+4wordfanarinooooo, makin' copieeees....woooord.
- Changa, on 05/29/2008, -0/+3Gilda was a shock and I consider it tragic.
- Lst01, on 05/29/2008, -0/+3Yea, that would be great although I don't think he finished recording all the lines.
- Barackalypse, on 05/29/2008, -6/+9The real SNL curse is that it continues long after it stopped being funny.
- AgentMull, on 05/29/2008, -0/+3ROCKET FUEL MALT LIQUOR. DAAAMN.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JpwjnMFlJI - rheaume, on 05/29/2008, -1/+4You don't obviously know who Dick Andy you do?
- kataztrophy, on 05/29/2008, -1/+4I still remember the coverage of Hartman's death vividly. Cant help but wonder what would have been next in his career. It's tough to translate the SNL style of humor to movies(especially with the significant drop off in quality), but I think he would have done well with it.
- lagannt, on 05/29/2008, -2/+5You don't know who Andy Dick is do you?
- Miamisun, on 05/29/2008, -2/+5Who will be the next to go????
- keithnoir, on 05/29/2008, -2/+5Image of Charles Rocket but not Chris Farley? or Hartman?
- GhostRidr, on 05/30/2008, -0/+2People have been saying that they didn't think it was funny almost immediately after the original cast left. And yet all these years later, it's still on, for one reason only--it wins it's time slot in ratings = it makes money. Obviously people still enjoy it, even though it's very popular to say it sucks.
- 808ethan, on 05/29/2008, -1/+3In honor of Phil, PLEASE give your woman a psych exam before you get engaged. I am serious.
- lcarsdeveloper, on 05/29/2008, -0/+21) You're a spammer
2) You posted a signature (instant Digg bury)
3) You said Phil murdered his wife brutally, he was brutally murdered BY his wife!
You're tarnishing his name by being so completely wrong and making such silly statements. Phil did nothing wrong, he was murdered, he wasn't a murderer.
You idiot - inactive, on 05/29/2008, -0/+2Steven Bernstein stabbed himself in the throat three times. BTW, as ways to kill yourself go, this would not be my first choice. I guess it could be a lot worse, like this guy had a much worse idea, IMO:
http://www.worldsfamousphotos.com/tag/monk - lcarsdeveloper, on 05/29/2008, -0/+2One thing that a lot of people forget about John Belushi is that he is the only person in America ever to be:
1) On the number 1 album (Briefcase Full of Blues)
2) In the number 1 movie (Animal House)
3) On the highest rated late night TV show (Saturday Night Live)
all at the same time, that was on his 30th birthday in 1979. He was the biggest thing in America that year, he was so famous he could literally waive a passing police car and catch a ride like his own personal taxi service. - HiImMikeCastro, on 05/29/2008, -0/+1I forgot that Phil Hartman was murdered on my birthday, thanks internet!
- Elranzer, on 05/29/2008, -0/+1I know it's not P.C. to say that some people deserve to die and the world would be better off without them... but unfortunately, it's true sometimes (actually, it's true a lot).
- SketchaMPM, on 05/29/2008, -0/+1Hahaha, classic.
