- Caluen, on 10/12/2007, -15/+82@Dolomite
No, your the Lame one here, would you stop with the ***** key, people that know how to use it, has already printed it multiple times and cut it into there desk and possibly memorized it as well..
So PLEASE just stop the spam.. - Tiak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+88Dear God! How do I get safely from my last.fm to digg?!! There be pirates in them waters!
- macfanboi, on 10/12/2007, -102/+2Digg should be scratched out and replaced with 09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0

- lerker, on 10/12/2007, -22/+4@dolomite
You're the troll, mate. Get over yourself and don't bother replying because you're already in my block list. - reconbot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+103"I'm waiting for the day when, if you tell someone 'I'm from the internet', instead of laughing they just ask 'oh, what part?'"
-xkcd's alt text for this image - counterstriker, on 10/12/2007, -5/+37wow the mapmaker really missed something there should be a whole nother continent that is devoted exclusivley to porn!
- mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -4/+43Where's Google? I guess google is the entire planet..
- ogryn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Did you not notices "Google's Volcano Fortress" right down the bottom? ;)
- bmcnally, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23XKCD rules.
"And over there we have the labyrinth guards. One always lies, one always tells the truth, and one stabs people who ask tricky questions". - SubKamran, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0This is fantastic, I really DO want a poster of this. I am wearing my SomethingAwful shirt! Goons represent!
- zeldafan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29@mrfreeziexp (#6469154)
Google is a secret subway system that runs underneath the entire planet. Everyone uses it to get around, but few know how it truly works. - OsiVert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@counterstriker
I would say porn is more like the ocean. It basically surrounds everything and is fun to go swimming in. - brianez21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3$sudo I love xkcd
- 3tcp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Loks like Digg is in a perfect position to take over Fark...
- redslash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love the series of tubes... classic. But wouldn't you expect it to be under Digg instead of Myspace? Like your average myspace user knows what the series of tubes means...
- cbergeron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bay of Angst below Xanga
That's Priceless.
Well done! - RyeGye24, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Where's google? Is it like, the entire other side of the map?
- profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+76You can get one - soon!
- sikosmurf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+41Main site - http://xkcd.com/c256.html
(you can't get Alt-text with the PNG link)- mcnappy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18"I'm waiting for the day when, if you tell someone 'I'm from the internet', instead of laughing they just ask 'oh, what part?'"
- knocknock, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18I wish firefox showed alt tags like IE does :( FF cuts them off if their too long.
- davean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Firefox not showing alt tags properly is a 7 year old bug, and the mozilla folk are nasty about people even wanting to fix it.
- BaconSquid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Alt fix Firefox extension: http://home.etu.unige.ch/~robin0/LongTitles_en.html
- Bamborzled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@davean
You are looking for the TITLE attribute, not the ALT attribute.
- gigaquack, on 10/12/2007, -23/+4let's not turn into reddit
- profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+66Look at "The Compass-Rose-Shaped Island" near the middle, and the map becomes that much more genius.
Oh, and see also:
Map Of The Internet -- http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/map_of_the_internet.jpg- IHaveIssues, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25So Something Awful is slightly below Digg (ie. more intellectual)? LOL!
- profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17^^ Nah, just Digg is slightly more practical. :)
- Pr0v0st, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Odd. I'd consider Wikipedia to be one of the most practical sites on the internet.
- Yoshi39, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5I never understood "Map Of The Internet" whats the joke?
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7its not a joke, its just really cool and accurate
- dn11, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5the compass rose is the key to the whole thing - although not entirely accurate obviously - most of these communities are made of of many different sorts of people with many different interests and agendas - digg especially has intellectuals and zombies, RL and political news junkies, and web culture junkies etc - and according to this map WoW players are slightly more in tune with RL than digg users? and of course this brings up the question of just how you separate "RL" from the web these days.
- pathy, on 10/12/2007, -11/+58Link to the comic page instead of just the picture, ya' *****. http://xkcd.com
- darkstar949, on 10/12/2007, -0/+46The homepage link only works for one day - here's the link to the actual comic: http://xkcd.com/c256.html
- madman678, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1looks pretty accurate to me.
- FyreGoddess, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I'm pretty sure that the Blogipeligo is a bit closer to the Sea of Memes. There are quite a few bloggers who seem to swim in it daily...
- mzwaterski, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Don't forget that the online world is a sphere. The Sea of Memes and the Blogipeligo are actually quite close when you wrap the map around.
- frequenicity, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Yep. Just remember that the location of the underwater Isle of Usenet may have been approximated...
- xkcd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4FyreGoddess: Yeah, the memes spread everywhere. If only it could be up the right side of the map as well as off to the left. Oh well.
- wounded625, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Not to me, I think the Reddit island will grow bigger.
- MrUnderbridge, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"Don't forget that the online world is a sphere. The Sea of Memes and the Blogipeligo are actually quite close when you wrap the map around."
I think the map is assumed flat, otherwise the East-West part of the compass rose would make no sense, with the most real-life oriented and web-oriented places sharing a border. Of course, taking seriously something that is clearly meant for fun might be a mistake as well... - pixelate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6dugg for "Bay of Angst"
- leetdood, on 10/12/2007, -5/+414chan is way too small.
- darkstar949, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11The /b/tards need more representation!
- shinji675, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This image must just represent the Western side. The eastern side would just consist of 2ch
- keyguy242, on 10/12/2007, -144/+7The coordinates for my home are as follows: 09 F9 11 02 9D 74 E3 5B D8 41 56 C5 63 56 88 C0
- AlphaEta, on 10/12/2007, -3/+83Dear sir,
Will you kindly shut the ***** up?
Thank you,
The adults
- AlphaEta, on 10/12/2007, -3/+83Dear sir,
- keegster, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2i need directions to youtube, i cant find it.
- imeddy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Where is the Ocean of Pr0n?
- databyss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+60I'm sure you mean the Pr0nosphere....
You can't draw the atmosphere that wraps the planet on a map. - YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28The Pr0nosphere starts approximately 1.5mbps above the surface.
- databyss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+60I'm sure you mean the Pr0nosphere....
- jazzlsx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Where's porn at? All those communities are nice and all, but as everyone knows, "the internet is for porn."
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+30See that little island named 4chan?
- darkstar949, on 10/12/2007, -13/+8Also, Usenet is well known for the fact that you can get anything on Usenet.
- Tiak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Unless there's some legally traded free good porn available on these internets that I'm not aware of, it's trade on the high sees among the pirates, where else?
- pants428, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28however, the first rule of Usenet is that you do not talk about Usenet...
- asauterChicago, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15@darkstar949
What's the first rule of Usenet??
Heh, anyhoo folks, no such thing as Usenet, that's why it's a dotted line, it's no longer there, it never really was, just an old collection of .edu servers, please move along, nothing to see here...
*angry eye at darkstar, minus one digg*
Edit: pants428, you beat me to it... - dougmc, on 10/12/2007, -13/+1Usenet is most certainly still there. It may not be in it's heyday anymore, but it's not dead yet.
(And contrary to popular belief, there's more to Usenet than the stuff under alt.binaries.* ...)
- DisposableRob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28Heh, I nearly missed Slashdot, next to Soviet Russia.
- Netmonger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I was going to make a comment on why is slashdot missing until I read this..
- iet2004, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27In Soviety Russia, slashdot misses you.
I'm so so so so so sorry to have posted that. I know we're tired of the joke, but dammit it was just so easy... - aarongough, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26@iet2004: anything is welcome after the 'key' debacle!
- seattlephantom, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0@iet2004
I was so making a stand against that joke, but when used properly it's still funny. Thanks. - seattlephantom, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0@jet2004
I was so making a stand against that joke, but when used properly it is still funny. Thanks
- haooken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Lol, Google's Volcano Fortress...
(bottom right)- qcfb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Don't forget Richard Stallman's Airship
- zackkitzmiller, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4lol @ usenet
- toppgun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+41st rule
- IanWhalen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19The far north island of Qwghlm is a nice touch too.
- revolvingcur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Dunno why you're not getting dugg up. Seems like a Stephenson reference would be appreciated among this set.
- Artifez, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Diggers don't seem to read much, but they snark like champions.
- FlamingWombat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Damnit, you got to this before me. But yes, that was completely awesome. But then again, so is xkcd. I dugg you up!
- TKDEE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I like that MIT got its own island (connected to Wikipedia). Randall Munroe is going to MIT to give a talk on May 14th:
http://lsc.mit.edu/schedule/current/desc-xkcd.shtml- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah but I don't get how MIT is an online community...
- DeadlyBrad42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26Dugg because it's xkcd
- Aliarse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21My new wallpaper.
If anyone else wants it, I've uploaded it for you. (1440x900)
http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/5122/onlinemapxz5.jpg
I liked the "your base" one the best. - SteveRogers, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1That's pretty good, I like third life.
- grungemusic3001, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Where is The Pirate's Bay???
- Batiu-Drami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6There is a river called the Bittorrent ;)
Also, slightly cleaner wallpaper-sized version: http://img79.imageshack.us/img79/692/onlinecommunitieswallpaxa9.png [found on the xkcd forums]
- Batiu-Drami, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6There is a river called the Bittorrent ;)
- superdupergc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9oh man, it's got qwghlm (from neal stephenson's baroque cycle) and the lonely island (from the guys that make saturday night live funny now) and i love how YTMND is called SPAAARTA (ytmnd). this map is beautiful.
- drev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16This is brilliant.
I love the tiny little peninsula, "Attractive Myspace Pages"- thomashauk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah but its waaayy to large... Should be like a grain of sand
- AnnieMole, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Top map - Boing Boing is bigger than than Soviet Russia
- dave292, on 10/12/2007, -11/+0The world is definitely changing. Check out "I.T. Wars: Managing the Business-Technology Weave in the New Millennium." The best book yet about the coming eCulture. If you're struggling with the alignment of technology to business, this is your ticket; it changed our organization (we even made our vendors read it).
- cderagon182, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Google's volcano fortress is the best part of the map.
- bobisoft2k5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Nay, it's Qwghlm, the unpronounceable island of unpronounceable Anglic-types, sorta. Qwghlm ftw!
I'ma go take a dip in the Wet Sea.
- bobisoft2k5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Nay, it's Qwghlm, the unpronounceable island of unpronounceable Anglic-types, sorta. Qwghlm ftw!
- AlexRage, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1weird...they forgot adult friend finder.
- adrake86, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2facebook?
- MosX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's there. Right next to LJ and Xanga.
- mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I guess now the bigger question for adrake86 is.. "LJ and Xanga?"
- donkz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Noob Sea surrounded by MySpace, AOL, and MMORPGs -- very accurate.
- dn11, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1i been playin EQ 1337 stylz since b4 U Cn a puter NOOBZ!! who the NOOB?
- camaro08, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Where is Google on the map??
- MrUnderbridge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Google is the map.
- thomashauk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But their lair of PhDs with their control centre is on there somewhere...
- profOblivion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Some of the less readable portions, for anyone confused out there:
Above the word "The" in "The Blogipeligo": Shipwreck of the SS Howard Dean / Huffington Post
Above the word "Spring": Make Blog
Below letter T in "Subculture": Numa
And can someone clear these up?
- Mountain below the word "North"
- Speck on the island of Technorati
- XY _____ below the letter B in Blogipeligo
- Something else below the letter G in Blogipeligo- mikesol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Spec looks like JWZ, who is Jamie Zawinski, the former Netscape lead programmer and now owner of the DNA Lounge in San Fran.
- geneticlone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1lol @ little soviet russia.
- xswag, on 10/12/2007, -19/+1LAME! Looks like some art project by a 12 yr old.
- Si1van, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16You look at it and think "oh hey, a Tolkien-style map of the web - that's funny". Then you look closer, and you realise that this is insanely accurate. The compass-shaped island is what threw me.
- ED209, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1pogo.com should be over by yahoo games, did I miss it?
- PJBonoVox, on 10/12/2007, -26/+3£50 says most of the Americans on this site think this actually is a map of the world with the countries replaced with sites.
- ateoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Somehow I wouldn't be surprised if there were a good number of people that did believe that, but considering most people on Digg are nerds.... I'm guessing that they know the difference between a fake map and a real one. In fact they probably can discern that almost as quickly as discerning that you're a pompous *****. See what I did there, see how I criticized you instead of your whole entire country? You should try it sometime, it might make you look like less of a giant flaming douche hat.
- Comatose51, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I love how he has Qwhlm in the upper right hand corner.
Go Cryptonomicon! - aelias, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1YouTube and the pirate community should be recognized on this map.
Scrape, Mininova, Demonoid, Piratebay, etc.
I could see why the pirates wouldn't, since they don't have a central community, but YouTube?- MrUnderbridge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"I could see why the pirates wouldn't, since they don't have a central community, but YouTube?"
Uhhh...YouTube's on the map there, Magellan.
- MrUnderbridge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"I could see why the pirates wouldn't, since they don't have a central community, but YouTube?"
- dn11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3youtube only exists as a body of water, not a landmass?
- thomashauk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's because it is a service not a website...
- Arcadian, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I wonder where Gaia would be.
- pblood1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5They forgot Maddox's pirate ship.
- cbreaker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2That map is reminiscent of Ultima's Britannia - http://www.dengler.net/xedragon/hrump/u5-050.jpg
- j2los, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0What parallel universe is this guy from where YTMND is more intellectual than the surrounding communities?
- Kalior, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3YTMND? THIS IS SPARTAAAAAA!
- Artifez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He means intellectual as in conceptual not as in book-smart
- Mirag3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No kidding.
- LavaHot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2... How does a person feel like an island? Do you have to be sandy and hot and have trees growing on your back?
- rationalist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No man is an island -
Except Aldous Huxley. - thomashauk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Metaphors man metaphors
- rationalist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No man is an island -
- Tremblor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I saw this and thought, I'll post this on dig!... I got beat to it. Bravo Live.. bravo
- anescient, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1xkcd sucks.
- garageillusion, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Deviantart: gays of web 2.0
Ha!- corvairkid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Would have been better if it was closer to "here be anthropomorphic dragons."
DeviantArt is either anime, anime style furries, or pictures of queer artsy emo crap that are mirrored on their MySpace and Flickr pages.
- corvairkid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Would have been better if it was closer to "here be anthropomorphic dragons."
- clpo13, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Awesome! I'm totally getting the poster.
- jamend, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Missing:
Geocities/Angelfire/etc. (at the north pole?)
Engadget, Neowin, [H]ard forums, the huge hardware site network (Anand, THG, etc.), and GenMay
Gaming (IGN etc.)
Maddox (a solitary island east of Digg, SA, etc.)
The Pirate Bay, eztv, mininova, demonoid, isohunt, ...
Hacker culture (2600 etc.)
Porn (Lawina, stile network, ?)- pgm_01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Are the underage brothels located in the mountains between Myspace and Orkut? Also, remember if you are sailing in the P2P Shoals, Peer Guardian may help you stay of the sonar screens of the USS RIAA.
- dragoneye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Engadget isn't missing its just tiny.
It's the island in between Wikipedia and Technorati. - superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Engadget is there, just really, really small. Its in the blogapagos
- wassim2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Can one of you Photoshop a mushroom cloud over MySpace?
- Anonii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Seriously, classmates.com has too much space, compared to 4chan.
