- AppleLuva, on 10/12/2007, -14/+216To Kevin Rose and the staff at Digg: I don't know if you can do it but could you find a way to "pin" this story, or the duplicate, to the top of the main page? This one needs to stay in front of everyone until James and his family are found! The more people who see it the better the chance it may help.
Thanks,
Matt - Trention, on 10/12/2007, -12/+108This is a front page duplicate, but worth it.
- n8r0n, on 10/12/2007, -5/+68My prayers are with him and his family.
- ringo380, on 10/12/2007, -14/+65Agreed. This deserves a dupe or three.
+Digg. - ipodman715, on 10/12/2007, -6/+53Damn, I hope he's ok!
- voldak, on 10/12/2007, -15/+57no reason to bury everyone's comments....take your frustration out on this comment. BURY THIS ONE. DO IT CHUMPS!!
- 1337gmr, on 10/12/2007, -6/+40This is a great example of why I respect the tech/gaming community so much. There is a great need to help someone and make sure that they are safe and all the people that no one ever sees band together to make something important happen, I hope this turns out positive because no one deserves this let alone a fellow enthusiast.
- TheThirdWheel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28Google map directions from his last known location to where he lives. If you live near the path it maps out and you know of any sharp curves/low shoulders/drop offs by the side of the road drive by and see if they went off the road.
- Egress99, on 10/12/2007, -4/+31This, surprisingly, had more impact on me than I would have thought.
Hoping for the best. - murdoc43, on 10/12/2007, -3/+27i hope nothing serious happened to James and his family. we should all pray for their safety and return.

Update 2: According to Crave, officials investigating the case have narrowed their search to a stretch of Oregon's Highway 38, which is on the route that the family would most likely have taken to get to the Gold Beach motel where they had reservations.

- molecool, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17This is really creepy - I hear that thousands of people disappear in the United States, never to heard of or seen again. Some of them probably do it intentionally, but a 'whole family' disappearing - there seems to be something going on. Oregon is pretty wild turf and it's easy to miss a turn and plunge down a ravine - I hope the cops up there are tracing the route they were traveling.
- akira117, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Yea, even though this is a dupe I'll digg it again to get the word out better.
I hope they all are found soon. Everybody post it to as many places as possible.
If you live in the area hand out fliers, and contact the local media about the story.
Basically anything that will help.... - TheWriteGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I'm craving new information about this situation. It's been nearly a week and nobody has heard from any member of this missing family? This is just disturbing. I am thinking positive thoughts but.... :-|

- RobototoboR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I posted this comment on yesterday's story but it won't hurt to put it here either:
This is kind of related. A member of a forum I go to (Entensity.net forums) went missing a week ago in Chicago while on a trip for school. Please check out these links if you are in the Chicago area just to see if you have seen him around:

I hope they're okay. - dhulser, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15it's much more difficult than you would think, you have to have 3 cell towers all getting a signal from the phone in order to triangulate, and even then, it's more difficult than you would think.... especially now, two - three days later it is unlikely they will still have any battery, unless as we all hope, everything is okay...
- trigon77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Internal CNET e-mail from Joe Gillespie, Executive Vice President:
"It has come to our attention that James Kim, a CNET editor and a friend to many, is missing along with his family while on vacation in the Pacific Northwest. James, his wife and two children left last week on a road trip to the Pacific Northwest. They were last seen in Portland on Saturday November 25th, where they visited with friends. His family has filed a police report and we currently working with the San Francisco Police Department, which has opened a missing persons investigation, to help in any way we can. We are also working with local news station who are planning to air stories tonight in the hopes that more visibility will help locate the family.
We are all very worried about James and his family, and will keep you up-to-date with any developments. If you know anything about James' whereabouts, you can contact the SFPD by calling 415-558-5508 during normal business hours and 415-553-1071 after hours." - rasterbator, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Digg Alert: this is a good idea for a feature on the Digg site. It could be like an Amber Alert. Just put as much info as possible in the description and digg readers could respond. Also to keep lame comments out of the Digg Alert section, ban users who abuse the space.
@stevenutz:
This would not be like pinning a normal story. It could run in the normal advertising section at the top of the Digg home page. It could even be sponsored by an advertiser, maybe rotating sponsors each week. - bdbr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12FYI, this was one of the top stories on the Portland Fox station's 10:00pm news (not sure about the other stations with later news). They had photos of the family, the car, and a graphic simulation of the licence plate.
Its really, really bad news that the police are checking Hwy 38. Its a small road, not one of the main thoroughfares to the coast. I'd never even heard of it before. Its not uncommon for people who take odd forest routes to get lost (which can be fatal this time of year). Usually after a week or so it no longer becomes a search operation, but a recovery operation. :-( - LTrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Wow, they could have been on the 126 between eugene and florence... Thats a bad road to drive on at night, there are some crazy twists and turns out there. I do hope they're OK.
- HumpyMcGee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I hope they find them as soon as possible, and that everything is OK.
- felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I've just blocked you, and I hope everyone else does the same. This is real life we're talking about here, and a man and his family who everyone is very worried about.
- sezzme, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10If you look at a map of Gold Beach, Oregon, there is what SEEMS to be a perfectly good road between Gold Beach and I-5. It isn't. THAT is one BAD road.
I was in Gold Beach once and the locals warned me about going on that road. It's hardly more than a car-eating, snow-covered trap for unsuspecting travelers. It's a linear hazard. I listened to the locals and avoided it.
If he called from Salem, I bet he ended up trying to drive on that road and now that stretch has got him and his car like a python gets a rat.
I REALLY hope he did NOT choose that road! - blanktarget, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9It's funny how people can be so petty especially in the gaming community, but when someone is actually in trouble people band together.
- RonaldLewis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8This should be the real spirit of digg users everyday.
- UltimaNut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Dugg to give more attention.
Hope they get home soon and safe. - draven_b4u, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7My sincere prayers go to James and his family. I hope in my heart that it is simply just a matter of miscommunication and he and his family are safe and off on a vacation somewhere. Hopefully we can all share a good laugh about this very soon.
- iampeanut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Wow, this is some shocking new to me. I've been watching James Kim since he was on Tech TV. I often watched his video reviews on digital audio on Cnet to help me make a purchase.
I hope the best for himself and his family. - Squidly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Seems that some of those mountain/lumber roads really are tricky when the snow flies. Check out this recent story:
http://www.mailtribune.com/archive/2006/0322/local/stories/01local.htm
Hoping for the best. - fyrfyter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You can only do Amber Alerts for when kids are abducted, not when people go missing. Also, you have to have some idea of who abducted them, in order to get the info out and posted on the interstate lighted boards. Home they find them OK.
- robio376, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I just read this and thinking of his two children brought tears to my eyes. My heart goes out to him and his family.
- chris4404, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Has anyone come out with any theories as to what happened? Seems like most are pointing to a car accident not any kinda of foul play.
- GiggleStick, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Well, if it's a fairly remote stretch of highway, then there's probably one cell tower per so many miles, so if you find out which one it's closest to, you can just search around that tower. If they can tell you're roaming at a certain tower, it seems like they could figure out this.
- stevennutz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6RE: rasterbator, i think that is a great idea, esp when its an issue such as this where it may not be the top news story perhaps, but it is something that affects our community as this does for alot of us geeks, gamers, Diggers, Twits, and just plain old TechTV fans.

It would be great if Digg was actually used as a tool to help solve a missing persons case or gather enough support for his family. You guys have alot more power than you think! Think flash mob meets investigation and problem solving. Digg for a better tomorrow!
*** - burstaneurysm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I know that everyone's already said it... but I hope they're all okay.
- pauly1980, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7the gaming community? dude its called human nature
- DZNpusher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I can honestly say, if I were in the area, I would go out and look.
Why wouldn't you? It doesn't matter if you don't even know who he is.
There's an entire family missing and that is absolutely horrible. Whatever I could do to help, I would. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if there were Diggnation shirt-clad searchers all over that road by now. - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6This is really upsetting. I always watch his reviews - I don't pray, ever... but I'm going to do it for real, now.
I don't know what to say - this feels like it's happening to a member of my own family. God, I hope they turn up safe and sound and very soon. - mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Dupe, but for a good cause. We need about 4 more of these..
- ulsterwrod, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4are there any diggers that live in that area?
are the roads around gold beach covered with ice and snow? blocked? - rheaume, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4
I want to pin it on your forehead actually. - OAKsider, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6It's important news, HUGE news and that's why it's Front Page (x2). Who knows what the digg effect might lead to. Hoping for the best ...
