- Bentinney, on 10/11/2007, -7/+215This is in no way a hypocritical action, to me he seems like an avid linux user. This site is just poking fun at users of most other operating systems, and makes many good points. The reason he uses linux on his server is because he likes it.
- jdc760, on 10/11/2007, -2/+31There's actually a statement about this on the site: http://linuxsucks.org/contact0.html
- RockinRoel, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6That guy is absolutely right. Maybe a bit sceptical, but right.
Linux has a long way to go before anyone else than people like me (computer geek idiots) would even try to use it. - Magnes, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2Maybe you should try it first, then make that kind of statements ;). You can't learn to swim while not going into the water.
- RockinRoel, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6That guy is absolutely right. Maybe a bit sceptical, but right.
- kcpwnsgman, on 10/11/2007, -3/+37from the site:
"Linux Sucks So Much This Site Uses It " - mikesbaker, on 10/11/2007, -15/+5well this web site seems more like a fanboi rant forum. and I think that you are right that the author is being ironic.
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/11/2007, -2/+28Who better to know if Linux sucks than an actual user? :-P
- luckynas, on 10/11/2007, -11/+0i think he means redhat
NOT SLACKWARE - dhughes, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4 Then why have the posts and comments about the site being run off Linux been deleted?
- jdoc, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Finally someone who has RTFU :-]
- Jugalator, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5OR... He use it on the server because his web host use it. Could be either way... We can't go assume he runs his own web server. A whole lot don't, but pick it out of good hosting plans. And then usually Linux wins out, because of lower licensing costs that translates to lower hosting costs.
- Hellmark, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3But there are plenty of hosts that offer hosting on Windows servers at competitive rates. If he really wanted to, he would be on a windows server.
- troydoogle7, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Reason that linux is cheaper and does the same job... Hence the reason he chose it...
- Hellmark, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I've seen Windows hosts that charged the same as linux hosts. Thats why I said "at competitive rates". A few hosts I've seen gave yo the option, for the same exact price, and not any more than the competition, you could be on a Windows/IIS system or a LAMP system.
- troydoogle7, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Reason that linux is cheaper and does the same job... Hence the reason he chose it...
- RockinRoel, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2He likes Linux as a server OS. He dislikes it as a desktop OS.
Everyone knows a LAMP configuration is mostly best for servers. Maybe OpenBSD or BeOS, but certainly not Windows. - richardiscool, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2IIS 6 is actually pretty good.
- Hellmark, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3But there are plenty of hosts that offer hosting on Windows servers at competitive rates. If he really wanted to, he would be on a windows server.
- DaMacGamer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6the poll they have on their site, says that 41% of people think linux is the best os out there...lol.
- rodgy, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Of course he runs Linux on his server. I guess he means, like many many people, that Linux sucks not on the server, but on the desktop. Linux is one of the best server systems with FreeBSD. Two different needs.
- Bleeblaow, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3And he would be completely wrong because Linux is a ***** sweet desktop. Now suck my taint.
- chingy1788, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2its like us MS users
we like using it
we like making fun of Windows
Its all good
BSOD FTW - BassJunkie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Indeed the site does seem to pick holes in most of the OS's and does seem more like a "tongue in cheek" site then one that does think linux sucks!
- jdc760, on 10/11/2007, -2/+31There's actually a statement about this on the site: http://linuxsucks.org/contact0.html
- atomicpoet, on 10/11/2007, -12/+69What he really means is that Linux is skilled at providing its userbase a pleasurable experience.
- altered, on 10/11/2007, -15/+3.org
- maxhrk, on 10/11/2007, -9/+7in other word, linux is skilled at giving userbase an orgasm? Hmm. Interesting.
- alexonix, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6judging from sample members of it's audience, that seems a safe bet.
- se1zure, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9anyone moving to linux has pretty much the opposite. from first hand experience.
- atomicpoet, on 10/11/2007, -13/+1"from first hand experience."
So what you're saying is that Linux knows how to get the job done?

Maybe he dind't want to buy windows server- agentstewie, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2What are you talking abuot se1zure's point is good, and your an idiot, he/she is probably too lazy to do a spell check
- jdc760, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2Clearly you're too lazy to check your own grammar.
- se1zure, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1llda - cause you can tell that through a one sentence post...
moron - foofightrs777, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2When calling another an idiot and nitpicking their grammar/spelling it helps touse the correct form of "you're". Just a suggestion.
- mikesbaker, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2every one on that site is (either a windows or a linux) fanboi
- se1zure, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7yeah, cause anyone who makes a typo is automatically an idiot .Obviously I don't think "know" is spelled "konw", perhaps you're the idiot for not knowing the difference between a typo and a spelling / grammatical error.
***** - feel free to look that up bitch. - se1zure, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5and i'm just saying, maybe he feels linux sucks, but windows server sucks more.

- mphree, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I don't know why you're getting Dugg down... but, I live near Boulder and this seems like something that someone who lives in Boulder would do.
- digboy99, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0I dugg you up, simply because I want to hear more about Boulder. I almost didn't, because the new comment system on Digg sucks. So, you=digg, new comment system=no digg.

- aaronm67, on 10/11/2007, -16/+6Most people pay for web hosting and have no control over what their server runs.
- ucg1, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Of course they have control, they are paying for it, so therefore they could have found a host running the OS of their choice and paid for that
- RonDutt, on 10/11/2007, -9/+42Website isn't always accurate, I know my blog/site runs on Windows 2003 (my own server) and yet the site says Linux...Didn't know Windows 2003 was forked from any form of Linux :P
- arcooke, on 10/11/2007, -6/+30Thanks for not spamming your blog. :)
- cbfreder, on 10/11/2007, -13/+1Who buried this guy and RonDutt? He's right. Good job RonDutt. I know you check your comments, i'll check out your blog. reply to me.
- scoobe, on 10/11/2007, -6/+1No, but the TCP/IP stack is ;)
- grumpyrain, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5No it isn't, never was, and never will be.
The Windows 9x and NT stack was based on BSD, not Linux. Furthermore, they have not been accused of violating the BSD license with their TCP/IP stack. Mac OS-X bases their Microkernel on BSD (not just a network stack), and Vista doesn't use the BSD stack at all. If you honestly think that Microsoft would use code licensed under GPL in Windows and publically admit it, you have no understanding of either GPL or Microsofts business model.- init100, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"If you honestly think that Microsoft would use code licensed under GPL in Windows and publically admit it"
OTOH, they could use GPL code in Windows and refrain from admitting it. Who knows? The source is closed (although there are ways to find out). - grumpyrain, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1If they knowingly did, it would be one of the dumbest business decisions they could make. It would take just one disgruntled former employee to blow the whistle on a module, and a judge could order them to have an audit on the source if it could be shown that there was a reasonable case to prove that GPL was being violated. Remember in the sony rootkit debacle people discovered some strings in the binary that implied that they were using LAME in their DRM, obsurity never guarantees secrecy.
- init100, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"If you honestly think that Microsoft would use code licensed under GPL in Windows and publically admit it"
- grumpyrain, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5No it isn't, never was, and never will be.
- grumpyrain, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Actually, it is quite common. In order to work around some DDoS attacks, Microsoft has in the past used Akamai (which runs Linux).
http://news.netcraft.com/archives/2003/08/17/wwwmicrosoftcom_runs_linux_up_to_a_point_.html
It was quite amusing to see OS: Linux, Web Server: Microsoft-IIS/6.0- callumj, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2So? Thats a company using a caching system! That doesn't mean Ron is using Akamai because Microsoft, a caching provider would no way effect the software of another server in this case. It is possible that his ISP could be running a NAT that reports as Linux, not Akamai.
- crimpshrine, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Actually it's quite accurate. (Netcraft)
If there is a Linux/Apache server listed, then there was a response with that info.
If you don't realize your are using some type of load balancer in front of it that is Linux based or caching service that is not Netcraft's problem.
It's querying the host or host that is responding on behalf of original host.
- arcooke, on 10/11/2007, -6/+30Thanks for not spamming your blog. :)
- illegalamigo, on 10/11/2007, -8/+12Well maybe his hosting company just runs a Linux server that he manages with an FTP? Entirely possible.
- Continuum, on 10/11/2007, -2/+81from http://www.linuxsucks.org/contact0.html
"Yes, we run on Linux. The hosting provider uses it for some strange reason. So sue me. :D Don't shoot the messenger!" - killthemoles, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2This reminds me of the time a podcast called WeHateTech got all this bad attention because of the title of the show. Some people just don't understand self-incriminating humor and resort to bad mouthing something just because it sounds hypocritical. Anyway rest in internet archive peace guys!
- inobla, on 10/11/2007, -7/+26Doesn't this lend more credence to their argument than, say, somebody bashing an OS and knows nothing about it??
I'd rather hear "Vista Sucks!!" or "OSX Sucks!!" from somebody who has actually spent some time using it rather than from a competing OS's fanboy who's never used it and is going to hate it no matter what. (that crap goes on A LOT around here).- RockinRoel, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I'm using Vista and it sucks, but I'm not saying anything new here.
It's stuck for ages sometimes before it pops out ye ole allowance question. - daza, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'm using Vista and it's excellent :-). Never once thought about returning to XP.
- RockinRoel, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I'm using Vista and it sucks, but I'm not saying anything new here.
- iFrikkenR, on 10/11/2007, -9/+29Half the frikken internet runs on Apache upon Linux. so what? i bet a good chunk of anti-MS sites run on IIS too. the hosting platform is irrelevant to the content. all you see is an ftp address to dump your content on. does it matter whats in the background?
- iFrikkenR, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6they don't want to - thats what their host uses. For example, my hosting options for my websites were windows or linux at the same price. linux gives you a bit more control and things like multiple ftp per hosting account. Personally i hate linux, but becuase the hosting plan is better thats what i use.
It's not a case of "want to"
what about mac sites? what do you suggest they get hosted on? Choice again is pretty much linux or windows - Many mac users hate both quite vocally - tedades, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1http://digg.com/tech_news/Microsoft_releases_Anti_Linux_Propaganda_W_PICTURE

- BrainInAJar, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1I think OSX server is only intended for small, no network admin shops that don't put significant load on their servers. It's not designed to be run somewhere big or public-facing, that's what UNIX is for...

- grumpyrain, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Actually Microsoft did have Akamai (running Linux) providing caching for some of their websites during a DDoS attack, so Netcraft did report Linux for these sites at one stage.

- gblackbox, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Excerpt from February 2000 Netcraft Web Server Survey:
www.apple.com has been running on Solaris and Netscape-Enterprise
for several years, but Apple is now introducing MacOS X Server and
Apache into the load balancing pool serving the site. At the moment
there is a 2:1 ratio of Solaris to MacOS X Server on repeated queries
to the site, but presumably Apple's intention will be to ultimately
replace the Sun platform with their own.
This may have been the case 7 years ago, but hardly the case now.

- fl00d, on 10/11/2007, -7/+5"Linuxsucks.org is a community-operated site." Hmm... strange how community-operated is acceptable as long as it is not an operating system.

next - rpgmaker, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4I hear this on the linux action show podcast, is funny.
- mirzar, on 10/11/2007, -8/+1just coz ur hosting server is running a linux machine doesnt mean that the sites creators use linus

- mevets, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I wonder if GNU runs GNU/Linux or Linux...
- pivovy, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1How can something free and opensource suck? If something doesn't work, it is always up to you to fix it (open source) and contribute to the community (free software). And there is absolutelly no one to blame. It isn't about cool desktops, games or even performance. It's about an opportunity to make it the way you want it. I strongly recommend every new gnu/linux user to visit http://www.gnu.org/ and read about the most important thing regarding gnu/linux.
- scoobe, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I've never laughed so hard!!! Here's some snippets from the site itself:
"I'm a Unix administrator and I must admit one thing. Microsoft Windows is much faster than Linux on the Internet. Graphics are better as well. "
and another:
"I use that spare time to reboot my Windows machine multiple times a day. Technical support personnel recommend that I do it regularly-- kind of like brushing my teeth. To help remind me of this necessity, windows pop up to tell me to reboot whenever I make a configuration change. By now my machine is minty fresh, I figure."
Anyways, i bet probably half of the users of that site are people who get it as the joke that it is. As for the others... well... pfft...HAHAHA!- init100, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2"I use that spare time to reboot my Windows machine multiple times a day. That particular comment was a repost of a text from the comp.os.linux.advocacy newsgroup. It was very strongly sarcastic.

- adc86, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1I believe it was served with Solaris at one point, but around the time they rolled out the Xserve, they implemented them.
