- benbrooks101, on 07/01/2009, -3/+119Looks like the server is running off AT&T..
http://rorr.im/ - bigpappapunk, on 07/01/2009, -5/+110wow AT&T, you statistically suck balls
- NBCLocal, on 07/01/2009, -2/+51ATT service in NYC is so sketchy. I can rarely access 3G in or around Rockefeller Plaza.
- atlquaker, on 07/01/2009, -1/+41More Bars in More Places!
- sykotik, on 07/01/2009, -4/+41The problem is, the population density in NYC. You have a lot of people, and a lot of devices (the fail-over in Starbucks stores are 3G devices) that are taxing the network in those highly populated areas. The thing is, there should also be a massive amount of wireless hotspots in those areas as well. With the new iPhone 3.0 OS out, and it's ability to automatically log you in (after the initial login of course) to, say, Starbucks, or Barnes and Noble, or whatever, you'd be better off staying on the Wi-Fi than 3G in those areas.
We're working to setup municipal wi-fi to offload the 3G traffic so that people who really do need to use the 3G can, and get a decent signal at that. You'd be surprised by how many folks don't know their iPhone can connect to Wi-Fi, and again, with the new OS, it'll just bounce between networks almost seamlessly.
I do work for AT&T Wi-Fi Services, in IT. We're a newly acquired subsidiary, formerly Wayport, and we're extremely serious about putting our expertise to good use to get everyone out there on Wi-Fi more often than 3G, because it's always going to be faster. We're users too, and we know what you guys want, and we're going to nail this thing. - TruckStuff, on 07/01/2009, -1/+31Good, I need a beer.

And we can all skip the multiple layers of blog spam. - Hardataq, on 07/01/2009, -1/+27I love how all the AT&T stores around have posters advertising "The nations fastest 3G network" when they don't even offer it anywhere near my area. I don't care how fast your product is if you can't even sell it to me. Whenever I ask when it will be available, I get, "Should be here by the end of the month." They've been telling me that for 6 months.
- Kerr, on 07/01/2009, -2/+23Yep AT&T reliability is absolutely horrid.
- brodie7838, on 07/01/2009, -4/+25First, title is inaccurate... How exactly was the iPhone used to test 3G speeds on Verizon and Sprint?
More importantly, this is a rip off of an original article posted on PC World on Jun 28:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/167391/a_day_in_the ... - imronburgundy83, on 07/01/2009, -2/+19What does this have to do with the Iphone? Looks like Verizon still trumps all.
- jydesign, on 07/01/2009, -1/+18yeehaw for Boston
- snotrokit, on 07/01/2009, -2/+18I have a Blackberry Bold in Chicago. The service sucks massive lesion covered festering donkey balls. I drop several calls DAILY. On the flip side, the service was perfect in Dallas and Orlando.
- joaob, on 07/01/2009, -3/+18I love my Bold, I hate my AT&T 3G service.
AT&T's 3G service is actually preventing me from replacing my Bold with an iPhone. What's the point of having superior web page rendering capabilities when it's barely usable? - KahRahTay, on 07/01/2009, -1/+16seriously.
I live around Dallas and get fantastic 3G service pretty much everywhere. I went to NYC a few weeks ago and I was shocked by how bad the reception was in what is considered to be one of the world's premier cities. - inactive, on 07/01/2009, -6/+20The iPhone is not worth AT&T. I know of several people going back to Verizon and the black berry, including me.
- deslock, on 07/01/2009, -1/+13Thanks for the storimony.
This reads like a form letter. - TheNik, on 07/01/2009, -1/+12AT$T? Really?
- Drizzit, on 07/01/2009, -1/+11Completely bogus, buried, this was not tested using a iPhone.. a testing company used PC Cards and testing software on a PC to test the service..
- thaprinze, on 07/01/2009, -4/+14Sprint with old SERO plan = greatest cell phone plan in history!
- jm5chn, on 07/01/2009, -5/+14San Diego and San Francisco...but no Los Angeles??
- SirBruce, on 07/01/2009, -1/+101. The stats show that AT&T generally has the fastest upload speeds. AT&T's main weakness is this questionable "reliability" reading relating to how often their tests were successful. A failed test is not necessarily an AT&T problem. Certainly the service is up more than 75% of the time.
2. The bold numbers show only peak speeds, not average speeds which would be a more practical measure. It's entirely possible AT&T is on average faster than other providers.
3. I can get an AT&T signal inside my apartment. I can't get a Sprint signal inside my apartment. So, AT&T wins for me. - tonmil, on 07/01/2009, -0/+8The chart does say that AT&T has the lowest reliability scores compared with Verizon and Sprint. 65% reliability is pathetic
I think they have the most expensive data plan too. - TheHIV, on 07/01/2009, -4/+12Down already. Thank you Digg.
- CanadaMan87, on 07/01/2009, -0/+8Yeah, iPhone is not mentioned anywhere on this page or chart.
- ryan631, on 07/01/2009, -1/+8***** Rogers. NEVER EVER praise canadian telecom. it's a huge gov't supported monopoly that the tax payers fund. So ***** up.
- fandyboy, on 07/01/2009, -1/+8It's the same with O2 in the UK, iPhone = oversubscribed 3G network. During busy periods in London I can't even get a webpage to display.
- c010rb1indusa, on 07/01/2009, -3/+10I've lived in both Boston and NY recently and I can tell you with an iPhone 3G the speeds are the same
- failtrain, on 07/01/2009, -1/+8AT&T average of only 75% reliability?
Seriously?.... ***** AT&T then. - seandfeeney, on 07/01/2009, -2/+9go straight to the chart http://rorr.im/digg.com/tech_news/iphone_3g_speed_ ...
- solidblu, on 07/01/2009, -0/+6I work in NYC and 3G will flicker at my desk without moving and the speeds are awful. If i got the speeds from this test I would be happy.
- strictnein, on 07/01/2009, -2/+8Somebody needs a hug.
- Proctor, on 07/01/2009, -0/+6My iPhone 2G with EDGE shows 11.2Mbps/2.9Mbps in Tucson
Oh wait, I'm on WiFi - Chunken, on 07/01/2009, -1/+7It's more about availability than speed. In SF only 60% of their attempts were they able to keep a link for 60 seconds. That's horrible. The speed doesn't really matter if you can't stay connected in the first place.
- Gr1nch, on 07/01/2009, -2/+8Baltimore but no Washington DC? Really?
- inactive, on 07/01/2009, -1/+7It does. Verizon is so much better in every way. If AT&T hadn't got the iPhone contract, there'd be no way in hell that I'd be an AT&T customer right now. They suck beyond reason.
- scotchw, on 07/01/2009, -3/+9Digg speed compared in crashing 13 websites
- superkendall, on 07/01/2009, -2/+7Actually what it really said is the speed is good, but that they had more problems with the network dropping.
Interestingly they also noted that in most places the number of bars you had on screen had nothing to do with the speeds you would actually get.
Happily, AT&T is pouring some of the iPhone money into network upgrades over the next few years. I think in a year or so they will be caught up on reliability. - petro62, on 07/01/2009, -1/+6I have not used any other carrier besides AT&T in the last 6+ years. I used to be on Sprint, but in my area their coverage was very sketchy and non-existent where I worked. Things are probably different now, but I am become accustomed to what ATT offers. I don't have 3g in my area so even though I bought the new iPhone and I am still on edge and I am used to it and okay with it. For the most part I would hope people would know what they are getting into when they sign a contract with ATT. I hope they understand that their area may not have 3g or have sketchy 3g service. If not then I blame them for not doing the research. With that said I am glad people are complaining and some leaving ATT in hopes that it will push them better their services. It isn't like we don't pay them really good it isn't like we don't pay them enough for it.
- xsecretfiles, on 07/01/2009, -4/+9haha AT&T sucks badly on the east coast
- jam3p, on 07/01/2009, -1/+6This is what I have and I've kept grandfathering it over to new handsets, it's great!
- EnTaroTassadar, on 07/01/2009, -0/+5I thought was trying to spell "Fast" goofy
- aristotle0dude, on 07/01/2009, -0/+5You are an idiot. Verizon and Sprint are currently CDMA while the iPhone uses GSM technology. Have you ever heard of google? Try using it and you might be surprised by what you will learn.
- jdames1980, on 07/01/2009, -1/+5I live in Lansing, Michigan and AT&T is excellent here. I was expecting horrible 3G coverage when I upgraded my iPhone but it has been excellent everywhere I have gone in town. You simply cannot base your decision on carrier based on a few cities alone.
- Jeepinator, on 07/01/2009, -1/+5because you need 7.2 mbps to view most pages.
/s - HurricaneDC, on 07/02/2009, -1/+5@Sykotik couldn't you just prop up more towers?
- jreinstedler, on 07/01/2009, -2/+6agreed... I'm in the same boat here.
As a side note... my employer thought they would drop their Verizon BlackBerrys and go to iPhones... about 1 month later, everyone was back on their VZW BBs... no coverage, no reliability, NO ***** WAY until VZW gets the iPhone. - athinnes, on 10/01/2009, -2/+6I have garbage service from 10am to 3pm in downtown Chicago. The network can't handle all the daily commuters to the loop. It's pretty pathetic.
- scuba7183, on 07/01/2009, -2/+6Megan Fox smoking weed
- Chunken, on 07/01/2009, -1/+5Yeah everything is a year away for AT&T. Like when they said they would have DSL in my area in one year. I think they said that for about 6 years before it actually showed up.
