- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For that matter, craig stole the idea for his list right off the classified pages of the newspaper. Stop acting like craigslist is so special. It's ain't. For anywhere outside the top 15 metro areas, it downright sucks, with nothing at all to offer anybody.
- slowspin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A simple description of what google base REALLY is:
http://spaces.msn.com/members/slowspinrematch/
An article from boingboing about it (they usually know what the heck they are talking about)
http://www.boingboing.net/2005/10/25/googles_upcoming_dat.html
It's basically a tagged database that will allow people to sell and buy items very easily without ebay or amazon to get in the way anymore.
At least that's how it's starting until it becomes much more...
NOT CRAIGSLIST!! - drseth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2...add Google Wallet and you have a free, ad driven, non-paypal-supported eBay.
- ZrO-1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I know a few ppl already said this, but I gotta add my $.02...

- tubeforme, on 06/09/2008, -0/+2Google Base is cool... but craigslist is still a better option... Especially if you use this site's craiglist helper... http://cl.pixelspotlight.com/
Much better search results. - slowspin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2IT'S NOT CRAIGSLIST!!! NOR A RIP-OFF!!! Read my earlier comment, please people get a grip.
- leadingexample, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree... I love craigslist. But, you have to admit the masses know google more than craigslist. They may get a following off their name. As well, I can see every business in the world listing in google. Especially if it's free.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Base, as in database. Sounds like something up their alley to me. Seems like it'd be way better and more all encompassing than something lame like craigslist would be.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"not all are going to find a project no one has thought of before"
Nobody has ever done base.google.com or an actual Semantic Web implementation before.
Once again, this is not a copy of craigslist. - TheCheeta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah... this whole business of ripping of other people's ideas and making them better really stinks. Get some originality, people. For real... I mean, I hate my shiny new car, my Powerbook, my flat-screen TV, my Sim City 3000, my Logitech Laser mouse... all rip-offs! In fact, I hate my touch-tone phone, my sneakers, my pens... better yet, these clothes! Total rip-off from the fig leaves! Man... just about everything is a rip-off! Scandalous!
+digg. I hope Google does a great job with this. - Rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In case someone wises up and edits out that IP, here it is... http://64.233.187.99/
- themachina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What's with Google attempting to pursue about 1400 different business directions? At first it was cool, now it's just annoying and makes them appear unfocused. Pick a couple core areas and stick with it.
- BkDd9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That ip address is the one of the site you are viewing (firefox extension: ShowIP)
- tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I call shenanigans. Why would "Vechicles" be the default item? And that clip-art thing in the bottom-right is not at all in the style of Google.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0also...check out the other programs he has open...Paint and Dreamweaver...very suspect.
- Joe_rigby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yay Google!
- fyre2012, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0craiglist sucks. Google is global, craiglist will never be. Google has a well known and simplistic interface. Craiglist looks like dreamweaver had a seizure and vomited random code all over the place.
Propps to Google for getting on board. And for all ye google nay-sayers, would you prefer that Microsoft did something like this?
I am happy to see a company as innovative as Google grow and become a giant. Who the heck else can POSSIBLY take on the M$ whores?
I'm as much a conspiracy nut as the next paranoid-scitzophrenic, but Google is GOOD, (motto=Don't Be Evil... what more do you need?) - capajc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bah, the image is at some URL in Spain's TLD. I doubt I'll accept it as any kind of proof/evidence of anything.
Nothing against Spain, I've heard it's quite nice. I'd just prefer to get my Google news from Google's own country. - leadx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here's a link to the Add Screen:
http://www.seweso.com/blog/uploaded_images/google-base2-735365.jpg - leadx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey all you people that think this is a fake story I submitted.... Check out my new story:
http://www.digg.com/technology/It_s_Official:_Google_tests_tool_that_could_post_classified_ads - kingkool68, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's more than a Craiglist, it's a database of anything that anyone can create. Check out http://blog.outer-court.com/archive/2005-10-25-n57.html for more info...
- matcrawf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i love google.. and i own lots at $150
- mikeazorin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google pictures of your house, your phone number, your address, and now your credit card number!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it is pretty broad from current events.. used car sales to databases of protein structures.. sounds more like a conglomerate of apps than just one
- mutant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0craiglist is fine for ubanites, but useless for anyone that lives outside its city coverage. Base looks like the bridge to everyone else. If Craigslist doesn't want this market, then Google will pick it up.
- dukem72, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Craigslist was born in San Francisco but right now is pretty much a global thingy.
But the point is that some people may not get the same exposure we receive here in the Bay because the site is just not local to them.
Maybe these same people use another site for their classifieds that is equal if not better than CL
So give them a break.
And remember that the more you know, the more you know you don't know.
Now in regards to the screenshot of the site. Well, more power to google. It is all about competition, choices and better development of existing technologies.
Perhaps this competition will encourage Craigslist to reinvent their service. - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0tenchi: Amazing. Most companies I know of actively block craigslist as a dating/chat site. It's on several standard blocklists used by corporations all over.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, looking closer at those links, it looks like they're making a stab at the Semantic Web. Notice that you can describe "anything" with it, basically, using name-value pairs.
Keeping that in mind, go lookup RDF and OWL. RDF is a way to describe things, OWL is a way to associate them together in a searchable type of context. Sure looks similar to what google is taking about there. - tenchi71, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Otto: I find the D.C. listing on Craigslist quite useful. I know of MANY people, including HR departments here in the Metro D.C. area who actively use and scour Craigslist. In fact, I found my sweet apartment in Arlington on a Craigslist posting.
- TheTrueSora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree on the shens for this one.
- maggoty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The problem I have with Craigslist is the way Americans and Canadians pronounce the word Craig as 'kreg'. It so weird, I just don't understand how they get that pronunciation from the way its spelled. Its pronounced 'Crayg' if that makes any sense phonetically. Wackiness ahoy!!!
- rileyjt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>>
I call shenanigans.

Type www.googlebase.com into your browser. Plus base.google.com returns a 403 which means it is there, just not accessible. Try some other random subdomain for Google and you will get a different error that the site doesn't exist.
Believe what you want about the service, but those domains are real and Google has them locked down. That sure makes a strong case for there being something behind them and it makes sense that they would be trying to get an alpha version of something up to show during their invite-only conference. Who knows what they are really planning or how this will pan out, but it is clear they have something going on. - bones_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It doesn't look like craiglist it looks like google. Maybe the concept is the same but who cares. Google for president
- miraclebaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1duh. this is like craigslist but only for terrorists. "Al Qaeda" is "the base" in English -- the whole "don't do evil" was a put-on the whole time.
- slowspin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And if you want to digg my story on why bas.google.com is not like craigslist, here's the digg:
http://digg.com/software/Why_base.google.com_is_NOT_a_replacement_for_Craigslist_what_it_really_is
If not, cool, who cares - I just don't like it when people are misinformed like this, and it being on the frontpage of digg is going to make everyone think it's fact. - dignan2681, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How does offering good servces make one evil? The reason we hate MS is not because they are so big. It's because they offer crappy products and demand that we all pay huge amounts of money to tem. That makes a company evil.
- jjarmoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google news search for 'google base' turns up a bunch of hits. Mostly just the same speculation posted above, but there's some mention of tie ins with the anticipated google micro-payment system as well.
- amishjim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I found my submissive on craigslist :D
- sammyo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Small datapoint, boston.craigslist.com is active and quite handy.
Not surprising, googlites are expected to come up with
a great new idea for their 20%, not all are going
to find a project no one has thought of before. Expect
more idea borrowing. - mikehilb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All your Base are belong to us
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Machina, Google is like "The Blob". It grows on it's own successes, inhaling all in it's path. And it's got a nice blue/green GUI :D.
- sammyo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0See: http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2005/10/rumor-of-day.html
"We are testing a new way for content owners to submit their content to Google" - strikezero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with you themachina , they are starting to take on to many business directions, and its anoying and also, is a path to monopolizing online business's, next it will be google podcast directoris, google myspace, google imagehosting, google downloads..... ahhhhhhhhh!!!!!! google should stop and focus on current project not just have a gaziliian beta's.... just my 2 cents.
- corrosive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you guys call google evil when craigslist is owned partly by ebay? lol
- SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Has anyone told Google that spreading yourself too thin usually ends in things snapping? Google will fall down somewhere. I'm not going to stand here and eulagise about them being evil and whatnot 'cause they have useful stuff, but also some of the way they operate and some of the things they have done do suck.
- QuorumCall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, this looks fake to me. The forger forgot the simple things, like capitalizing both words in "Google home" and Privacy policy", etc.
- leomyhero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1base.google.com is up. However when attempt to login, it sends you back to enter your password. There is no way to post or to search yet.
- skyblu2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's got to be fake: no "beta" :)
