- CGreen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"Sweden, one of Europe's most computer literate countries, was not included because the original sample was chosen for a broader study."
So the headline is quite possibly wrong. - steviefungi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The title is VERY inaccurate. It doesn't talk about computer literacy, the article only talks about the amount of users. You could be completely dumb and use a computer, which would still qualify you as a user, but it doesn't make you "computer literate". That title is BS.
- gurm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This survey has a poor sample, only 17 countries surveyed, and it even mentions how Sweden was left out and then presents numbers from another survey, showing a higher literacy. No digg.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just because they have cheap interenet there means their all computer literate how..?
Just because a monkey can hold a calculator, doesn't mean he has a clue in hell of how to use it :)
(I'm not saying the dutch aren't more computer literate that the rest of the world etc, but this study is crap..)
- Ben - jakethecake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Broadband on average in Sweden is cheaper and fast then in the Netherlands. 24/8 via cable is available to like 40-50% of the population and the rest 30-40% can get 100/10 lan or 12/8 dsl. Sweden has a statesubsidized nationwide fiber network. The ISP:s just buy in on it, and they are ready to go. 'the PirateParty'(https://www.piratpartiet.se/English.aspx) and the PirateBay is the political and reactionary groups of the same idea, information freedom, for everyone.
- HannoverFist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They appear to be comparing percentages of population, which to me is not a terribly useful indicator. How can you compare the percent usage of the Netherlands percent usage in the US?
82% of 17 million is ~14 million.
76% of 297 million is ~226 million.
That is a sixteen-fold difference in population. Oh, yes. Computers are much more popular in the Netherlands.
The numbers are misleading. - Mcaruso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Best article, ever.
- jakethecake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1https://www.piratpartiet.se/English.aspx The link had a ' ) ' in it, and didn't work, sorry.
- ShadowLady, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Alleen al hoeveel reacties hier op zijn in het nederlands geeft wel aan in hoeverre het waar is ;)
- DiRadical, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1[quote]
What is misleading in the article? do you guys understand English or what...the numbers are correct there is nothing misleading...

If some very computer literate countries are excluded, the result could be incorrect
I can write a study which says that I am the richest man in the world (if you exclude Bill Gates and several million other citizens of this planet) - SilentSpyder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All I have to say is "Amsterdam Rocks!"
- MysticX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No digg, because it consists of only 17 countries, that´s just lame, people think it´s bad that Sweden was left out. Well, just to break the ice, Iceland, my home country has a higher percentage, and more speed. Simple as that.
- TomB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@archimboldo (off topic,sorry, but)
that sentence is definitely no dutch, the translation of "A fish was swimming in the water" in dutch is "Een vis was in het water aan het zwemmen" or "A fish zwom in het water"
where
A = een
fish = vis
in the water = in het water
was swimming = 'zwom' or 'was aan het zwemmen' (but that's for another grammar lesson ;-) - crosswick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hoe zou een Nederlandstalige digg.com heten? blief.nl? :-)
- edwinm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Duh. That was the *oldest* dutch sentence. Our language has changed a bit since then.
BTW. According to the comments on this page I can statistically say that about 50% of the users of digg.com are Dutch ;-)
En de Nederlandse vertaling van digg.com zou zoiets worden als ploegg.nl of spitt.nl. - nnonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey, If I had to wear wooden clogs I'd never leave the house either (ouch) ... leading to an increase in my computer usage.
- 2manydjs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"And yes the Dutch are clever, can you speak 5 languages (on average) and have better diction in English that a lot of English people I know?. "
Have you ever been in Holland, or did a dutch guy tell you this..
(It's not true) - suppazone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Commission estimates that there are over 58 million broadband subscribers as of January of this year. Broadband penetration in Ireland stands at 5.34% in Ireland. This compares to a high of 23.79% in the Netherlands, 22.51% in Denmark and 20.33% in Finland.
Broadband take-up in the five best performing countries (Netherlands, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Belgium) is currently outstripping the US and Japan, the EU report says
http://www.rte.ie/business/2006/0220/telecom.html - reefer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And that we know 5 languages on average .. yeah right ... thats another myth
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1in america our purpose is to shut up, earn little money, put the poor in the military & pay taxes to fund the extremely weathy population military conquest of the world.
the resources exist, they just go to the military - cius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1didn't read the article, don't care to. But I've got one thing to say. There are two things I absolutely hate in this world: people who can't tolerate people from other cultures, and the dutch.
Sorry, saw the word "dutch" and immediately thought of Austin Powers. - BritOverseas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Whats not to understand, it is called statistics.
If 99% of 1 countries population has one and only 25% of another country has one but the number of people in the second country is ten times that of the first that means percentage wise the first country has a higher density of users and therefore a higher understanding/skill level, easy.. You can't just say, well this country has more people so that means they know more/are better, that is not a correct calculation and is not the correct use of the statistics.
And yes the Dutch are clever, can you speak 5 languages (on average) and have better diction in English that a lot of English people I know?. However, this is also true of a lot of Scandinavians too. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that would explain the network attacks I get from that area of the world
- Waterstraal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Weird study
- 1821, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 http://www.iwebtool.com/tools/
- turbopro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yes, the most tetrahrdracanobinal literate in the world. I believe it. +digg
On topic: you know, we the Dutch have been known to have a head start in decentralised technology. Those windmills weren't just for tourists you know, we kinda made ourselves the first global colonial power using those...
I wonder what we'll come up with this time! :-) - Hoohoonick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am dutch, job offers can be sent to me@hoohoonick.com!
- Stockwell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Als Vlaming dit: leve onze Noorderburen. Wij komen lekker ietsje achter. Maar ik voelde me altidj al meer thuis in Amsterdam hehe.
Groetjes jongens. - reas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ha, digg !
Groeten uit Scheveningen.. - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0... The Red Light District.... Hash Houses....
Now it explains it.... now we know where computer viruses and spyware come from ;)
Now on to the next question... The Meaning of Life....
"42...."
-Hitchhikers Guide - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool wist niet dat er zoveel dutchies op digg zaten!
- B0jangles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The figures they give do not back up the statement about the literacy. They simply show that more people use the computer in Holland. The fact they left out Sweden just has to show what a pointless investigation they made. Whats to say they haven't left out other countries?
- andrelix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and thus why all the movies???
- nork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"If it ain't Dutch, it ain't much."
Proof that there is clearly a difference between "literate" and "computer literate." - sailor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The Dutch are allright...but could they keep their crappy posts out of the newsgroups?
- sophiaperennis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"It's good to be the king" - Mel Brooks
- harryd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0'Tax break' == PC Prive? Want ik betaal toch gewoon het duurste BTW voor mn PC...
Anyway, huzzah for the Netherlands. We use computers! How great is that! I study CS in the Netherlands, and Dijkstra is sort of a minor deity with the teachers. - Hollandboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ja daar zijn we alweer in het tech nieuws!
w00t.
gathering.tweakers.net - Lifelogger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ha ha ha... grappig al die Nederlandse reacties!
Back to English. Was a nice article to read. Hear about this before.
Go Holland! :-) - optroodt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So it seems the PC-prive project succeeded in terms of keeping up with the rest of the world. In a few years we'll see if we (yes, I'm Dutch :-) will start falling behind because they canceled the project.
Those broadband prices seem awfully low btw, what defines 'broad' in broadband? I pay ~50 euros for 8mbps/1mbps a month, I don't consider 512kbps/256kbps broadband anymore... yeah I know, we dutch are spoiled. - CaptainFuture, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually weed isn't technically legal in the Netherlands, but the government doesn't enforce the law anymore on this issue since the 60s or 70s I believe. Same is more or less true for XTC and cocaine although to a much lesser extent. There have been calls to actually truly legalize marijuana, but our government is already taking lots of heat from other European countries (especially France) for its tolerant stand on private drug use, so that's probably not going to happen anytime soon.
- Tripcast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with this, I lived in holland for a year back in 2001, and found they were way ahead of the UK at the time, and still seem to be. Everyone I knew had a computer with broadband access and it was very cheap.
- allarise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dude... 30% of americans don't use the internet? I'd think it would be much higher. Then again I don't live in Arkansas.
- Archimboldo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Off topic, but from several posts here, Dutch looks a lot closer to English than German does. The Angles and the Saxons, of course, gave English a lot of its words. In deference to our new Dutch Information Overlords, I looked up the earliest recorded Dutch sentence. It must be an older form of Dutch, as babelfish couldn't translate it.
"Visc flot aftar themo uuatare" ("A fish was swimming in the water")
Visc = Fish?
flot = float?
uuatare = water?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_language - lamprey187, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't care if the Dutch are more or less computer literate than the US or the rest of the world, weed and prostitution are legal there which makes them superior to the rest of the world. Until Las Vegas becomes its own country.
- ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My family hails from the Neterlands. Damn it feels good to be Dutch!
- Boomkamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fijn dat we meteen voor Stoned *****'s worden uitgemaakt.
- sapo916, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0***** article... Proves nothing
- BritOverseas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"And yes the Dutch are clever, can you speak 5 languages (on average) and have better diction in English that a lot of English people I know?. "
Have you ever been in Holland, or did a dutch guy tell you this..
(It's not true).
Yep, many many times.
Holland borders several diiferent countries and most Dutch guys that I worked with spoke Dutch (obviously) English, German, Flemish and some of them French, last count, that was five...
I have also worked in the Dutch sector of the North Sea and nearly all of them spoke several languages, same with the Norwegians and Danes. -
