- votamli, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12"The users that make original and indie videos is why YouTube has been a success."
That's find an dandy, but what's not to say that the Users don't move to another website? What loyalty do they have with YouTube? How strong is it? Friendster was ditched for MySpace and Facebook. Maybe YouTube is next?
Yes its about the Users, but let's remember Users can switch too. - Qenton, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9ALL of the media on YouTube is copyrighted, by default (that's how copyright works) However a lot of what is uploaded is owned by the creator/uploaded or the owner doesn't care or wouldn't mind it being uploaded anyway.
- emfb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7MySpace, the world ugliest network of web pages, is a perfect example of this phenomena.
MySpace reminds me of the worst of Geocities but even uglier.
YouTube on the other hand is reasonable -- not the best video quality but good enough. - JimMessenger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"...it’s the loyal community of viewers and users who upload content. That’s what Google was buying and what other media companies don’t have."
- BlinderBomber, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8It's more than just loyalty, when people think of videos online most think of youtube. Google bought the poster child for online video sharing, and when most people think "hmm... where can I find a clip of that?" the first place they turn is youtube.
- mr.gates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5But most of it is distributable copyright material, like movie trailers, video game play demo's, clips from movies, commentary, ect... which studios don't mind being distributed, free publicity.
- RandomSkratch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Anything created to be a "YouTube Killer" will invariably fail. The reason being is that these media companies want to make a site to showcase the best of THEIR content.
Who wants to watch MeTube? - BenSerwa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5There's a Myspace Video? Lame.
- gostars, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7I'd contend a huge percentage (probably a strong majority) of what's uploaded and viewed on youtube is copyrighted. Youtube hasn't succeeded on the merits of independents.
- TeamJesus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3YouTube killer, MySpace killer...These stories are a dime a dozen. To be honest I recently checked out video.aol.com and was reasonably impressed with the amount of content available there. Their setup, however, was atrocious.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3People that want their videos posted on the web will post on all potential sites. The second myspace video came live I noticed many people that were youtube directors immediately made accounts so no one stole their username.
- gootdude, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Youtube is so successful because of the illegal content. People barely watch those random indie films, yes some of them can be hilarious and people flock to those, but most of us watch the copyrighted material and tv clips on there.
YouTube is great because everyone always wants to see video clips, and they always seem to be on that site and are up on youtube before any other site. If all the user-submitted original content disappeared, youtube would be just as popular. - daeyeth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3all they need to do monopolize the material they ALREADY own. they don't need to have indie material...it doesn't even have to be youtube like. instead of wasting all their time taking down copyrighted material, they should beat theam to it by putting the shows up on their site the day it airs, free, and better quality.
- mr.gates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is a good thing, let them waste there money, same reason i'm happy every time I see a PS3, or Blueray commercial.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Web users are a fickle bunch and have no loyalty.
If Bittorrent was a little easier to setup and use as a TV of sorts, this crappy low-res google ***** would die off like it deserves.
Azureus's new buyout comes to mind, and they will probably succeed in making the google/youtube video killer. With BT there is no need to have lots of bandwidth or money. Even right now you can see lots of independent content on ThePirateBay, it just lacks a lot of 5 second clips of "man kicked in the nuts" or "boring girl bitches about another user for 30 minutes".
Youtube has a few good videos under a mountain of ***** from myspace users too dumb to figure out nobody is interested in their god damned trip to the psychiatrist, so it isn't going to last. - heaintheavy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If you look at the content that is driving the majority of people to YouTube it is copyrighted material. Sure people may stick around and look at user-created material, but most people are viewing material capped from copyrighted sources.
I guess I'd argue that only the users matter because they are capping. - iandanger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That works in theory but their advertisers would ***** themselves.
The problem with expanding content to a new medium is how to maintain a profitable business model. Youtube obviously isnt an example of this because it basically makes enough money to pay for itself. To have true streaming full length television you have to come up with a way to make enough money to cover overhead AND production costs, something they haven't managed yet.
Till then, hardware like the slingbox or tivo is the best you're gonna get - BenSerwa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The point he was trying to make, is either it's copyrighted by the uploader because it's original, or it's already copyrighted by someone else because it's not.
- freff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I know what he's trying to say. He's getting dug down because of the spam in his signature.
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"The users that make original and indie videos is why YouTube has been a success"
YouTube has turned a profit? News to me. - thasmadawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is why Netscape failed.
- legendxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I love YouTube.. so my interesting crap you can find.. then I found people who use their webcam to make editorials about the 'state of youtube' and ***** like that. Seriously.. these people spend their afternoons broadcasting their thoughts to an unknown audience and expect people on the INTERNET to take them seriously. That blows my mind. Someone get these people a hobby.
- Rachmaninoff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think we are under estimating the potential of having several media networks come together to offer streaming TV shows. I think a weakness of initial efforts by media networks to offer selections of their shows online is that users must navigate different network websites and content delivery systems to find the specific shows they like. Having multiple networks band together to create a unified service would attract a wider variety of people.
A person may not make the effort to find just one show online when it is already on TV. But if multiple shows a person watches are available at one website, it might be more attractive to check it out. - MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hate patents...
- StephenChow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I agree 100%. Once I finish Death Note, then I'm done with YouTube until someone uploads Barefoot Gen
- Rudyoncal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I agree. Users can switch -- "my bet is that their loyalty will remain with whatever video portal gives them the best tools to upload." Friendster died because MySpace became a better way to manage a social network.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1***** youtube, they got lucky, there's no technical skill there.
- MeatBiProduct, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0in 1996 when i searched the internet i thought Alta Vista.
today i use google.
sites come and sites go. the ones that stick around are the ones that evolve with its users.
imo, youtube is a cluster **** of content that isn't indexed very well. it has a some good videos but tons of worthless crap. much like the "other" big sites out right now. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4I have NEVER gone to YouTube to watch some independently-produced video, unless it's of the "America's Funniest Home Video" variety. And in all those cases, I got there through links from sites like Digg. Never did I go to YouTube itself and purposefully go and look for such videos.
Why do I, and indeed the vast majority of people, go to YouTube? Because sometimes we think, "Hey, I suddenly thought of a certain moment from a tv show/movie... I wonder if they have it on the site!" - Pseudorious, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Most use youtube to find TV and film clips.
- IrritatedJones, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I just recently really jumped on the YouTube bandwagon. Mainly from other people emailing me stupid clips they'd found on YouTube. I would agree with the fact that you can't beat YouTube without the user base. Rather then beating YouTube, I would think that it would be more beneficial to try and cooperate with YouTube. Seeing how the user base is already established.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Copyright is something original and holder is the one who made it first. For instance one can make unusual design of fire place, which could be copyrighted although fire places are not original but design of fire place can be original or copyrighted.
