- Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Which is why I use Google Video for my video uploading needs (I tried uploading a 12 minute short that I made and youtube said it was too long)
- Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10That sentence didn't even make sense.
- Elohir, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11As long as it's long enough for Daily Show skits, I'm happy.
- 13tongimp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Sometimes you see vids on YouTube that are longer than the limit for uploads. How do people get around that? There is an entire episode of MST3k, for example, if you search for "Magic Sword".
- quakeIII, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Thanks for a link to your thing.
Cheap. - MasterDwarf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Hello Google Video.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6more like it'll be filled with ***** content, and less people will go
- Thorpe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Well, YouTube is one of my favourite video sites out there. You still get a considerable amount of time for your videos. Anyway, most clips I see are summed up under five minutes.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6If the videos are short, you are more likely to look for many videos, thus you are bound to see many ads. That's all about business.
- unitethenations, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Directors' accounts allow unlimited posts...or at least they used to.
- VirgoanVenom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've always wondered why the YouTube employees don't take down copyrighted material themselves.
- DarkJC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I believe if you apply for YouTube director status you can upload videos beyond the 10 minute barrier. When you become a director you agree to not upload any copyrighted content.

- quakeIII, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4MyTube?
I am certain the average person would love it. - Jangles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4They should makea time limit, and have a paying membership if you want longer. Otherwise these guys are gone.
- jks52086, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It seems like they already have started taking stuff off. There's messages like this: http://snipurl.com/tyw2 (redirects to the youtube page)
And I came across another video the other day that said it had been removed from a request of the owner, RIAA. I couldn't find that one this time, though. - NTolerance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm wondering when/if the RIAA will force youtube to take all those music videos down.
- cloudyprison, on 10/12/2007, -1/+42 1/2 minutes tops?
Bye youtube. - DarkJC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What's with all this FUD flying around?
NO, they are not limiting it to 2.5 minutes tops. LEARN TO READ PEOPLE.
NO, they said nothing about charging for directors accounts. LEARN TO READ PEOPLE.
All they said was that they want to remain focused on shorter clips, hence the 10 minute limit that has remained in place for MONTHS now. They said nothing else. Stop spreading the FUD. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4and there lies the problem.
no one is going to want to upload their video's, which are what bring people to the site, and pay for the pleasure of it.
remmeber without people uploading video's youtube has nothing to offer. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5oh well they just lost me. no more advertising revenue from my visits if all they are going to host is some 2 minute rant from a ***** emo kid over last nights split milk.
- futurepastnow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It may also have been uploaded before they made the 10 minute limit.
- Reliant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They are probably getting hit now with expensive broadband bills and just don't want to admit it. Showing shorter videos will help them with their broadband accounts.
- Skullpop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Director's accounts are like MySpace Music.. Anyone can claim to be an artist and upload copyrighted content. I think YouTube plugged it.
- cldnails, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Oh, I think it's popularity will continue to soar...just think of the user base they already have. In addition, when it comes to entertainment on the net, the quick-click kids are still ruling...unfortunately.
- Skullpop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm sure this will present a whole host of problems once they begin to remove (presumably they will) longer videos.. I know a whole handful of media sites that have funny clips longer than 3 mins on them, embedded from YouTube.
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I'd look to Google Video for longer video. When Flash 8/9 is available for Linux then Google can make the switch without having the Linux crowd feel disenfranchised.
Adobe - you listening? - jpyun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They've already broken down the majority of newly posted anime episodes into thirds, but 10 parts seems a little excessive. Since the 10 minute limit was instated I've stopped using YouTube. Back to IRC and BitTorrent for me.
- davesawyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2While we're discussing video sites... does anyone remember the name of that search engine that would find videos from youtube, google, etc. all in one search? I saw it on Digg a while back and can't seem to find it even with Digg search.
- Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is one of the reasons they did this...

That is a feature length documentary that was in theaters, and is currently on DVD, I know the director and editor of that film, I haven't pointed out to them that it is on youtube yet. (Though they may be just happy their message is getting out there)
I just cant believe youtube hasn't taken it down, its been almost 5 months. - shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2that was a sentence?
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3And there's hundreds of full-length anime episodes.
- rastan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Successful? If by successful you mean losing millions a month in bandwith costs, then yeah, I guess it is successful...
- drewolanoff, on 06/10/2008, -0/+1I will flip out if they start charging for director's accounts. Our show is 30 minutes plus and weekly, YouTube doesn't want us all of a sudden? WTF
- DarkLaughingMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Even then I have a feeling some people will find a way around it. Like break the anime ep, or tv show into 2-3 min clips under some strange name to avoid regular search detection.
- oneiroi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I still hate this. I think the best thing about youtube was that people could produce their own videos. Now they're limited to what they can show. I've seen people making little animations, video clips, now they've been restricted from making them the time they want.
I really hope this limit brings down youtube and moves the traffic elsewhere.
There has to be better ways to fight the copyright issue, rather than restricting user control over their own media. - TheWalkingDude, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I think the main reason they're staying away from long videos is because that's where the majority of copyright infringement takes place. I like short clips - they're great for blogs, movie trailers, music videos, etc., although I think there is still a huge market for full length videos. A person can bookmark them for when they have more time, or use it in place of watching television. Here's a good example:
http://digg.com/space/BBC_Documentary_About_Planets_On_YouTube - kilofox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1YouTube is burning through about 1 million a month in bandwidth costs. If they were to allow videos of a 1 or 2 hours, who is going to pay for it? It amazes me how people think bandwidth is free... its not.
- cbiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Stuff like Super Nerds is why this site is great.....
"Patton Oswalt & Brian Posehn star in a show about two nerds who work in a comic book store. This is the failed pilot episode shot for Comedy Central." - Anth741, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its a great way to stay out of direct competition with Apple videos, and Google Video. Now no one will be able to say that Google video or apple video is 'better' than them, because they aren't in the full length video competition.
- CosmicJustice, on 10/12/2007, -2/+312 minutes is too long. I won't even look at a amateur vid that's over 5 minutes.
- razicop, on 04/18/2008, -0/+1whatever it says, its mind blowing, i LOVE youtube...
- jmhacc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1fta
Instead, the off-the-charts-successful online video distributor is aiming for the quick-click generation that likes its entertainment in bites of 2 1/2 minutes or so, said Chad Hurley, chief executive and co-founder of the San Mateo start-up.
``We are not trying to stream full-length programming,'' said Hurley, who was part of a panel at the annual AlwaysOn Network summit Wednesday at Stanford University. ``We have developed a new clip culture.''

how does that mean they are going to lower the clip limit again/? - will42, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is nothing new. Youtube changed the limit to ten minutes months and months ago.
- PSPDS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0youtube is awesome and i think it should be left alone
- WAFFULS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1well atleast we still have time to watch. i wonder if they are going to delete everything above 3 mins? lol.
- ninjatroll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where is Cory Doctorow to save us from such horrifying technological limitations!?!?!?
- alexstrouss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1iTube YouTube WeAllTube
- tmcdigg, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5oh well, a good thing couldn't last.. of course they know that's what MADE youtube popular in the first place.. any place could host quick compressed clips of 2-10 minutes.. it was the fact that you had longer times that people flocked there.. now that the party will be over.. so will its popularity! ... and people will be off to find other pastures to fertilize with youtube-like stuff
