- Calypsoaf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Did you get a video? I know a good place to host it.
- rickcarson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9At last, we will have an answer to the age old question:
Who wins in a fight between the Pirates and the Ninjas? - MonkeyFCoconut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6As long as you cannot easily copy the videos off of YouTube, I don't see why the World can't share their recordings on a big Internet VCR. It's not like the videos are of a high enough quality to put on DVD and enjoy on a TV or anything. I can think of a lot of reasons why people shouldn't care, but I can also see a lot of reasons why people want to flex their greedy legal muscles.

- hobophobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3We are pleased to announce the existence of an ongoing conflict between consumers and producers over the rights, availability, and pricing regarding commercial entertainment, educational, and artistic media.....
Seriously, when can we as consumers actually sit down and discuss the issues with the producers and distributors and actually work out some sort of sane and progressive strategy for the future of culture, media, and art? Has this not gone on long enough already? How much DRM will it take before we blink and notice how silly we're all being? Are we not better off with a compromise in which content creators get a paycheck and content viewers get good content without advertising?
Come on, please? - vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3As media consumers, we'll pretty much just always be along for the ride in the DRM game. For the most part, we're talking about frivolous entertainment that we consume in our free time partially because it's convenient. Most people don't care about DRM restrictions, and I think that's actually rational. DRM only applies to content that is created by the paranoid who overestimate their own importance.
I think the only way they'll learn is by taking their controls to the max and seeing that we just don't take their products as seriously as they do. This isn't food and shelter, and the vast majority of shows/movies just aren't worth watching or buying, DRM won't change that.
Their real threat on Youtube isn't the fact that their images and brands can be freely perpetuated, it's that we can entertain ourselves without them. - krisper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've worked in Japan and it's not the technological and cultural utopia the BoingBoing crowd like to think it is. Once you're past the superficial gadgetry and bubblegum pop aspect, you start to see the very real and serious ways that Japan lags behind. There's more to technology than toy robots, children's cartoons and cell phones.
- dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, I've been to Japan. They had 6 TV stations on the air there. 6. Without cable or satellite here, in my home town, there's 14. I think you're missing the "technological" issue being discussed here. I think something that Japan has as a bigger issue is that since their television is fee based like in England and other countries, that since they can assess those fees to YouTube users they miss out on those fees.
This is nothing to do with how many different cell phones Softbank has for sale, or that you can buy your porn from a taking a picture of a barcode in a store. Television in Japan is a money maker for the gov't and a very select few. - PaulOwen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"In their reply, YouTube chief executive officer Chad Hurley and chief technology officer Steven Chen indicated that they are willing to come to Japan to discuss the issue, Watanabe said. The executives said they are very interested in starting a business in Japan so are looking to work out these problems.
The group sent a response to YouTube on Wednesday in which they said they are open to discussions should the YouTube executives arrive, he said."
Reading between the lines:
"Chad and Steve would love to come to Tokyo on a jolly, to look at new business, at JASRAC's expense and on JASRAC's entertainment budget."
JASRAC, on the other hand, would love for Chad and Steve to make their own way to Japan to sort out differences, and all going well discuss any new business opportunities."
Yep, Japan is still the most poorly understood country in the world. - m0tbaillie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Buddy, if you'd ever been to Japan then you'd know that the US is far closer to being back in the 20th century that is Japan, technologically-speaking.
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I always knew "Web 2.0" would start World War III...
- iBlinkalot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3With the exception of all the anime that gets uploaded why would anyone care about the rest of the content? Its mostly three minutes of some variety show, the equivalent of a short portion of Wheel of Fortune. Not that the networks do not have the right to get the material taken down, but this is not a means of replacing TV watching, merely supplementing it.
And yes ninjas have ascended on the YouTube office by now. - iBlinkalot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1そうだ! I just hope the Naruto freaks don't find their way over here.
- Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3酷い! オタクはいかにユーチューブのないナルトを見るか?!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3google should delete japan, i think that would fix the problem
- glock22ownr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The part that is completely stupid about this whole debacle is that these are just clips. Not the whole show. So... isn't that like free advertising?
- Nonyaz, on 06/23/2009, -0/+0Anyone catch that guys name?
"We appreciate that they responded by the deadline but consider the response not satisfactory," said Satoshi Watanabe
Watanabe lol - cranium, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Hey, I know -- how about if Japan blocks youtube.com entirely? Nothing like putting yourself back into the 20th century, that's the shizzle right there.
Domo arigato Mr. Roboto - cranium, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1dupe -- ignore
- thetipster, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0utube will not comply... they will use this as a bargaining tool for future business in VOD services
- StephenChow, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2lol, death note is so lame.
- inf4my, on 10/12/2007, -10/+0The requests that these people are making for youtube should never have to be implemented. It is not necessary to show a warning in japanese....dont see many other sites out there with it. However maybe they could implement some sortof language selection tool which would prob take some work. Also giving youtube your name and address would not be good. They want to track down and prosecute everyone who uploads copyrighted material. I think discontinuing the account is good enough. We dont want youtube to become like google adsense if you get banned from that it is pretty much no opportunity to ever get on your site again. I had fraudulent clicks or something like that and got booted couldnt get adsense on the site ever again, I wrote to google about it and they pretty much pwned my gmail account which does not exist if you try to login, but does exist if you want to register a new account with the same name.
- 2Deluxe, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1Newsflash: Room temperature milk unsatisfactory. Digg me down if you care.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2They are angry because the YouTube videos do not contain rootkits.
