- j00fek, on 10/12/2007, -6/+38hopefully they can make money...
- bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31I don't see why, the internet IS a series of tubes!
- the_snitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Youtube's business plan:
1. Host videos
2. ???
3. Profit! - trax4321, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Ahhh right so in a month thats 1,073,741,824 pages.
Your logic is faultless... lol - Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Ouch. I think you tried a little too hard on that one.
- brownboi43, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19"hopefully they can make money..."
Hopefully they won't be sued and shut down. Think about it: how much of the content on that site is infringing on copyrights?
I'm just waiting for the day, (not looking forward to it, as I am a fan of the site), when a big media company like Viacom gives them an ultimatium: Get our ***** off your site or we sue you for hundreds of millions of dollars. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9yeah..that was just retarded
- Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10im waiting for big media companies to invest in it instead of saying you stole our stuff and then buying ads of there tv shows and products
- jlabs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"hopefully they can make money..."
I think they still have some time to figure it out (before they blow through their VC funding). - sophiaperennis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Here's the link with more details: http://www.techcrunch.com/2006/07/17/youtube-serves-100m-videos-each-day/
- the_snitch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@starsky pootube.com goes directly to youtube.com
weird. - bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Interestingly enough, it does! It probably is just a site redirect for people to get into YouTube at schools.
- rm999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"Think about it: how much of the content on that site is infringing on copyrights?"
Very true. I think they are sort of like Napster from 5 years ago. They aren't really making money, are hugely popular, and are a ticking time-bomb. Once the big, organized copyright holders like the TV networks and MPAA want, they can get youtube in huge trouble - probably to the point that it will have to be shut down or where they have to remove everything popular (which is the same as shutting it down).
Of course, if this doesn't end up happening, the fact that they aren't profitable will do the job - KeyLimePie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Please earn money YouTube. I want you to get better.
- sophiaperennis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They recently had a new round of financing, which doesn't hurt with traffic costs going up that exponentially.
- coolspray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5*waits for punchline*
- kp3469, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11i just hope they can finally make a video play smoothly. they've been so slow recently - i guess that's what happens when you grow that quickly. i pretty much never actually watch videos on the youtube site anymore, i just use keepvid.com and download the whole thing.
- TheWalkingDude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I wouldn't mind commercials in the videos, if that made it legal for them to show mainstream TV Shows, Movies, etc. To me, that would be a huge step towards blending TV and computers. I know the image quality isn't the greatest, but the convenience is excellent. Plus, if they signed with major studios and grew in popularity, the quality should improve.
Speaking of which, here's a new index of 500 cartoons on YouTube:
http://digguser.blogspot.com/2006/06/updated-cartoon-index-full-length.html - jlabs, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8or pornotube.com ;-)
- Mocib, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Too bad the video quality is still bad. Hopefully YouTube will at least double the converted video resolution in the near future and improve the fast motion compression system.
- Mocib, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, I'm speaking from my own experience. For example, uploading a self-made high-res racing game video to YouTube comes out as a stamp sized, pixelated mess. It maybe a XviD to Flash conversion problem, though... don't really know what is the case.
- starsky51, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@avius: i think you're after pootube.com
- vze2wnv2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1These articles about YouTube's growth and everyones' effort to figure out how to monetize it are all beginning to sound the same.
- Kindred420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1we have been very impressed with youtube. In just over 2 months our videos have had over 5 million views. We will continue using youtube to promote our tv show.
- lcohiomatty86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1as it becomes very easy to make short and simple videos via a digital camera, people will start uploading videos to link to their myspace/xanga/watever.. site like youtube make it very convienent to give a friend a link on IM saying "here! check on this sweet video i took at that party last night".....
youtube is also awesome just for finding awesome videos in general... - lofidan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So you can skip to the middle of a video, providing you've waited for all of the preceding part of that video to download/cache?
So can I.
I'm saying that if you want to skip the the final 20 seconds of a 10 minute video right after opening it, you can't, unlike Google Video.
And yes I'm using Maxthon with it's delicious broken IE rendering engine!
And further to the download stuttering, it's interesting how Google Video will always play smoothly, regardless of my clearly inferior browser and broadband connection.
(I will now remove my tongue from Google's ass). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4pornotube isnt gay if you click on the straight filter ;)
- tuxuser, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2as for the bad video. i have found some hd stuff on youtube. simply serach for it.
maybe they need a hd channel. itrs not that marcomedio can't serve hi quality video its what that users send in. - mlkmnz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Change your browser or something, your item 3) has never happened to me, when I enlarge it I still have the exact amount cached. Same goes for item 4), provided I have cached, I can skip all over the place if I want. And as for item 5), get your slack ass a better internet connection.
Wait a minute, is someone using a Microsoft branded broswer? That someone being you? - mlkmnz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well you should, cause google video's content doesnt hold a candle to Youtube. Think of it like as the iPod of online video streaming sites.
And how do you want to know you want to watch the last 20 seconds of a 10 minute video? Did you read the last page of a novel first too? - dtfinch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Download the videos you love the most, because soon YouTube will be bankrupt.
- alephsmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Increasing traffic which is no doubt due in some part to the glut of YouTube Diggs Making the front page.
Is it really necessary to Digg every new video posted on YouTube- however trivial and inane. - anroo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No wonder it's the fastest growing website...
"Brian and Jen doing a really awesome zoolander impression".
"Evangelion intro with really awesome soundtrack".
- tmoore44, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not a big fan of YouTube. They compress the video too much. They should half the fps and raise the compression setting. Much better results.
- vardhan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0YouTube needs a feature that lets you skip bits of the video (i.e., go right into the middle of the video, insted of having to watch it from the start)
That's one of the reasons I search for a video on Google Video before I turn to YouTube.
But other than that, it's doing great, and I hope it gets even better - EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Youtube isn't censored by websense (touch wood) yet though.

Actually, it's more like:
"Oh, wow, gotta check out these two goofy Chinese guys lip-synching to N*sync!"
"Look at that fat kid with the light blue shirt wielding a light saber!"
"That NumaNuma guy is soooo funnnnnyyyy!!"
"Evolution of Dance--- WUAAHAHAHHAHA! Gotta post him to my blog!"
"People haven't seen enough videos of the Diet Coke/Mentos experiment, so here's my own to boot!!"
YouTube is growing so much because it's everyone's big break to be the next "internet star." Just film yourself doing something goofy, upload, and pray and hope you'll enter internet folklore as "that guy/ girl in that cool video."
I also think that being able to embed content is a big plus. Wanna have a site with cool multimedia? No need to deal with the technical complications of streaming video. Just add some html and you're good to go! Now setting up a media site is as easy as cutting and pasting. - lofidan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3youtube could be so much better.. it's very frustrating
1) You can't maximise the video window in the same browser tab
2) Even when you DO maximise it to another window/tab it's just playing larger, not full screen
3) When you 'maximise' it you lose all your downloaded data that was nicely cached before and have to wait for it to stutter back to life from the start
4) No way to skip to the middle of a video.
5) Unless you're watching some emo retard singing along to some band for a 1 minute clip, you have to play then immediately pause, to let it buffer up enough as the download speed is variable to say the least
Unfortunately when it comes to content it out ranks the technically superior Google Video every time.. and it IS free I guess. - jtjenn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I LOVE YouTube. When I can't fall asleep I go on YouTube and look for funny videos to laugh at.
- jeremye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."
- noGoodNamesLeft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In the Scottish vernacular "tube" is a stupid person or idiot.
"You tube!" said in a casual and vaguely derogatory way in an urban Scottish accent sounds like a retort to someone who'd just said something stupid.
Which given the moronic nature of some of the self-produced videos from 14-year-olds on there isn't so far off the mark :) - JensUK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Re: mlkmnz "Wait a minute, is someone using a Microsoft branded broswer? That someone being you?"
Safari reloads from scratch when you hit the maximize button. - alfiest, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The story might carry more weight if it qualified the figures. There is no source at all mentioned for these numbers.

"And how are they going to make money? They carry very little advertising, only some google ads, but those don't play a role for video's embedded in blogs etc. Perhaps it is more sneaky and evil and they 0wn the distribution rights of all content published via youtube and are going to exploit it against the will of the contributors"
we own you! - driley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Hopefully they won't be sued and shut down. Think about it: how much of the content on that site is infringing on copyrights?"
Hate to burst your bubble, but YouTube has been very dilligent about that issue. Not only have they banned users who've uploaded copyrighted content, they've limited video lengths to 10 minutes, to discourge people from uploading television episodes and movies. - FreakingHound, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0right, because you are the authority on this subject, right?
- goerikat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Mindless Self Indulgence promoted YouTube at a recent concert.
...the singer then pulled a girl on stage and made her kiss his ass. - FreakingHound, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0and I think you should shut the ***** up
- leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6I hope they don't go completely freakin evil.
