- koregaonpark, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12All lot of people use Yahoo! Photos, especially here in India. It's commonly used to share albums privately, etc., which is hard(er) for the average user to do with Flickr (most people haven't even heard of Flickr).
I always thought Yahoo! MyWeb and del.icio.us were rivalling services, but Flickr and Yahoo! Photos cater to different demographics and types of users. The thing is, I guess Yahoo! can make more money off Flickr, due to its viral nature and majority of public photos, which are indexed by search engines.
I think this was a bad move. Closing your service and offering to migrate users over to competitors (Photobucket, Kodak, etc.)?- SpFmmTrist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14They should have offered a one-button quick migration service of everything in the Yahoo Photos to Flickr. This way, everyone would have been satisfied.
I still like Yahoo Photos, but heh, it was just a matter of time.
Better sooner and sorry, than later and still sorry. - zizzybaloobah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I've never found it hard to share my photos w/Flickr. I simply give people my URL (http://flickr.com/photos/zizzy) or a URL to whatever set I'm interested in sharing. In fact, when I send people there for the first time, they often tell me that how they ended up wasting several hours because my photos led them to to look at other peoples photos, the various groups, etc.
- jasnmb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Does Flickr have the ability to share private photos with non-members?
- AegisGFX, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Is this the Microsoft effect already???
- luchid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@jasnmb
Yes, it does. You can create a "Guest Pass". See http://www.flickr.com/help/guestpass/ - frprod, on 10/12/2007, -25/+4"especially here in India"
No wonder they are shutting it down..to prevent millions of cheap Indians from freeloading. - doctorberen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3frprod,
I can't believe you just said that! That was such a racist/bigoted remark. I hope it was just a tongue-in-cheek statement. But even if it was, it is still inexcusable. - crazydiode, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@frprod
***** do you pay to upload fotos? - netade, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Spend $39.95 a year...get Smugmug. It's sooooooo worth it to know your pictures are safe.
http://www.smugmug.com/price/ - kbarrett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Another great alternative is Zoto. A one year membership is only $19.95. This site has lots of ajaxy goodness.
http://www.zoto.com - kbarrett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You can also publish photos from Zoto directly to your Flickr account which I really like. I have both a Zoto account and Flickr pro account. Zoto is great for uploading, tagging, and organizing tons of photos easily. But Flickr is great for sharing your best shots with the community and blogging them.
- hematochezia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2glowfoto.com is also a good alternative to yahoo photos for people who are looking for simple photo hosting.
I think Yahoo would be better off keeping the "power user" site as well as the "casual user" site, but I guess they know what they are doing.
- SpFmmTrist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14They should have offered a one-button quick migration service of everything in the Yahoo Photos to Flickr. This way, everyone would have been satisfied.
- breezy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9As noted at the end of the blog posting, it has been confirmed that Flickr will soon be adding video support. I think this news is huge. This is a potential source of quality user video content instead of the mass warehouse style of YouTube.
- skilless, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5What is it about Flickr that makes you think quality would be better than YouTube?
- SirBotchness, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1if its a free video service just like youtube it will be JUST like youtube. It's not like a whole new user base will use flikr. It's all the same people.
- TomPlansMedia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3check out vimeo.com if you're looking for quality video made by actual human beings. its a refreshing break from the mentos/coke and commercials that inundate youtube
- breezy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was also thinking along the lines of vimeo.com . Vimeo has good quality user made video and I get the feeling that flickr is the same for photos. If flickr adds video it seems like it will be more competition for vimeo than it would for youtube.
- kbarrett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Video and photos? A bunch of new Yahoo photos users? It sounds like Flickr is in danger of losing its elitist, niche reputation. I love that Flickr has amazing content. I don't know how I feel about having it diluted by a mass of new users and a bunch of crappy video clips everywhere. I like the simplicity and purity of the site 'as is'. If ain't broken, why fix it?
- mp3dog, on 10/12/2007, -22/+4The Flickr interface is ugly as *****!!!
I refuse to use it.- DiggingDeep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8any site with no or hardly any ads is good to me.
besides flickr has pretty good integration support meaning you don't really even have to use their interface directly. - ElbridgeGerry, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27Flickr...ugly?
What version of the Intertubes are you using? - CrankyPants, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I also find flickr rather cluttered and unintuitive to use.
Google's Picasa pages are much more to my liking -- they suit the the way I want to share photos. - kbarrett, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Ahh...the first time I saw flickr (about 1 1/2 years ago) I have to admit that I didn't think it was very attractive either (I'm a designer). But I've grown to appreciate its simplicity. Now I wouldn't have it any other way. Flickr definitely rocks.
- DiggingDeep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8any site with no or hardly any ads is good to me.
- ravis31, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3They should either increase Flickr's monthly upload limit from 100MB to 500 or more.My yahoo photos consists of literally tons of photos which may take days to upload on flickr.Their migration better be easy
ravis- Baku, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4But then you're able to upload more than 100mb with a pro account, which is relatively inexpensive at $24.... plus there's software you can use to batch upload to Flickr like the Flickr Uploadr (which you can get here: http://www.flickr.com/tools/ ).
If you want to stick with the free account, then unfortunately you stick with the 100mb/month upload limit. - tuartboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey, it used to be 20MB...

- foobar5892, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9I believe it because it was written on a blog.
- Warpstone, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Google's Picasa is a fantastic photo gallery service as well. I highly recommend it.
- RyGiL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Agreed... I find Google's Web Albums service fits my needs well and the integration with Picasa just makes it that much better.
Now Google not only knows my web activity, emails, and credit cards, they can also see what me and my family look like. All Google needs now is a DNA collection site and it will finally be able to clone me.
- RyGiL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Agreed... I find Google's Web Albums service fits my needs well and the integration with Picasa just makes it that much better.
- digitallysick, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1yahoo had photos? *never knew*
- monergism, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Who owns your data? If you don't control it, you don't own it.

- edebolt, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0lastest rumors on CNBC.. Microsoft is looking to buy Yahoo....
I think google stock should go up if that deal goes thru. - IHUsol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Cnet news blog stated you can move to Flickr or choose Shutterfly or Kodak

- Linh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12umm.. tell her to get her own?
- h12cjb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2i use bubbleshare.com. it's easy to share photos publicly or privately and the are no account limits
- geodescent, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Can anyone suggest a good alternative service that:
a) has no limits -- my photos are about 1mb each so that people can print/order high quality copies -- and i have about 57 albums with an average of 75 photos each currently on Yahoo
b) organizes albums the same/similar to yahoo photos -- flickr is retarded and has piss-poor organization. i don't want a myspace of photos. i want a clean gallery that i don't have to code myself.
c) is free- nateboom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I personally like the simple and clean interface of Picasa Web Albums. But it doesn't have unlimited storage. If you want those features, you might actually have to pay for it!
- lynx77, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1you're a cheap ass - ***** off with your ***** pictures of chimps, no-one cares.
- pglowiak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dumb move, Yahoo.
- kbarrett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2To be fair, he may have a point. Some people feel that the quality of photos on Flickr will decrease as it's flooded by photos from Yahoo photos. Opening up the floodgates is not always a good thing. Look at what happened to Digg.
- dmilner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is a good opportunity for one of the other photo sharing services to step up and offer the same features that Yahoo Photos had in order to gain market share.
- keyguy242, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3good riddance
- lynx77, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2omg I SO dont care.
- blueboodah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting - I wonder how much of Flickrs increasing numbers are porn spammers.
Seems to me this illustrates Yahoo's problems with their technologies. Clunky web groups and, according to my friends, clunky photo sharing. I guess they would have had less chance of losing customers if they did the migration themselves in a way to make it basically transparent to their users.
But since none of my friends ever pays Yahoo any money... - fdbryant3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Personally, I like AOL Pictures. Though it is a bit clunkier than Flickr it does offer a large percentage of the same features. Combine that with free unlimited storage of photos at full resolution with no upload/download limits - I'm happy with it (although would probably jump to Flickr or Google in heartbeat if they offered this).
- aliguana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3thing that bothers me.. one click migration. Are we going to get a billion lo-res cartoon animgifs flooding Flickr?
- orchardadvisors, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0For those put off w/ the Flickr "myspace" feel, take a look at Sharpcast.com, which is a straightforward editing, organization, and sharing tool. Also has synch between PC, web, and cell phone.
- newstart, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Flickr killed Yahoo Photos
- vanmeir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Strangely enough, the Yahoo Photos home page is still telling me about the "big upgrade" that's coming.
Screenshot from today:
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/229/483930272_f3dcece034_o.jpg - ethicalbypass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with one of the comments above that Yahoo Photos and Flickr are basically two services targeted at completely different sets of people. Moreover, It was not like Yahoo Photos was doing badly, infact it was the second most popular photo site. In any case, I think its a really bad move where Yahoo is going to offer its users with the option to migrate to not just Flickr, but also other competing sites (hence losing users) !! and that too at a time when Yahoo has been facing a lot of flak for its market performance. I am sure it wasn't too difficult to continue this service for people who were already using it, so it really beats me as to why would they take such a decision! Instead they could have expanded the scope of services available through Yahoo Photos to make it more Flickr like (bring in more community features). Whatever be the case, 'losing users' is really not an option Yahoo can afford to exercise at this moment.
- xtremesniper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is a "new" Yahoo Photos coming. I thought they were going to get rid of it....
http://news.com.com/8301-10784_3-6084601-7.html - ethanpeirce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hmm..It's the 4th and no announcement. This is *****, just as I has suspected.
- samy293, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Since the time I switched over to Picasa, I never even thought of Yahoo! Photos.. Plus Yahoo! used to scale down the photo if you want to download.. that was so horrible. I lost total faith on them when they started doing that.. compare that to 1GB of Picasa and great integration with its Desktop option too!
- n3txpert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I use esnips (http://esnips.com) to maintain my photos + music + video + document, so don't care much about yahoo photos, because the bandwidth not good (have no idea about the others - maybe it bad only to me :p)
- rouslan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who would need Yahoo Photos when there is flickr? (part of yahoo).
- mario85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i cant acess my yahoo photos, i didnt get any notice from yahoo. Anyone knows whats going on?
- alchemista, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1A good summary and comparison of the official options:
