- MissOthmar, on 07/03/2009, -0/+23Seems only fitting, since the company already took shareholders and employees over the falls in a barrel.
- EminentJonFrost, on 07/03/2009, -0/+6Um... cool.
Just as long as they don't ruin the view of the Falls with ads. - handheldchimp, on 07/03/2009, -3/+9So, the next time I pee in the falls I can say Yahoo is powered by my piss?!?!
- mousky, on 07/03/2009, -0/+4Except that the Falls do not power anything. The Niagara River provides the 'fuel' for the generating stations.
- RJ0534, on 07/03/2009, -0/+4Yup hit the nail on the head. Anytime a large corporation goes "green" usually it means they found a cheaper way to do something and it just so happens that it also is positive for the environment. Like drink bottles with less plastic.
- anillop, on 07/03/2009, -1/+5It is funny how they claim that it is because it is a green decision when in reality the reason they located there is because of the cheap power from the hydroelectric plant. Data centers consume a tremendous amount of power to run the servers and keep them cool, so they need to be by cheap power sources like hydro plants. Sure it is nice to be able to claim the decision is good for the environment but don't think for a second that it was a large factor in the location process.
- enantiodromia, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3News Flash:
Most datacenters in and around New York, are powered by the Niagara Falls. - Pinkertinkle, on 07/03/2009, -4/+7Yahoo isn't even going to be around by this time next year.
- TDDebug, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2ZING!
- gemlarin, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2Lockport is a *****. I grew up in Niagara Falls, and I am actually really surprised that Yahoo would build a datacenter anywhere in Niagara county. There is no tech in the area, and both Lockport and Niagara Falls are so broke that they have not fixed the crater-like potholes that cover 90% of the streets in the area for at least 10 years. The old saying certainly stands true here, you can polish a turd, but it is still a turd.
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -1/+2Why do tech companies need to be aroud other tech companies?
- exabytes16, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Who are you addressing? Your audience seems rather limited.
- gemlarin, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1The only thing green in Niagara County is the glow over Cecos and Love Canal.
- gemlarin, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Who are you kidding? Buffalo is just as much of a ***** as Lockport and Niagara Falls. Anyone that grew up in the area and had the brain to leave can tell you that. I bailed out of Niagara Falls at 17 and never looked back. If rundown Chippewa is the best Buffalo has to offer these days, then you just reinforced my point.
- pw378, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Talk about lack of innovation.... New York has been powered by Niagara falls for over a hundred years and Yahoo is just now catching up?
- machej, on 07/03/2009, -1/+2too true...
- grindmygears, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1Indeed, just how 'green friendly' will this be? If Yahoo is going to use power from an existing hydro station, where will the extra power they'll be using come from? I'd be more impressed if Yahoo was creating some new green power source to power their data center.
- Pinkertinkle, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1u shud sell ur yahoo stock, it's not going to recover from you talking it up on digg
- speedbmp, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1must find all comments and report them all!
- jtorkbob, on 07/04/2009, -0/+1Just how many things can be 'powered by' a given hydro station?
- slashdotordigg, on 07/03/2009, -1/+2That's why all my emails were streaming away!!
- speedbmp, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1must find all comments and report them all!
oh and ***** you Spammer! - Luke, on 07/04/2009, -0/+1This is great news for the area that is hurting for jobs!
- jemka, on 07/03/2009, -1/+1niagara please!
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -1/+1Yes...the second biggest site on the internet won't be around in a year. Gotcha.
The Yahoo name is FAR more than just search. And in many of those other things, it is BY FAR the leader. The name will still be used. - enantiodromia, on 07/03/2009, -1/+1depends when you were there. the golden years don't last forever.
- chourobin, on 07/03/2009, -1/+1how sad that yang took the blame even though i highly doubt Microsoft was at all willing to go through with the deal in the first place.
- thallium205, on 07/03/2009, -1/+1Nothing will please you Amish people...
- riyanray, on 07/03/2009, -3/+2Huh... which one is most famous Yahoo! or Niagara Falls???
- bradgillap, on 07/04/2009, -1/+0That's not entirely true. It depends on where you stand.. On the Canadian side of the border I work for a huge tech company.
I hear we are hiring another 200+ employee's. Now if our local internet providers could just keep up with speed and bandwidth restrictions we'd be set.
http://www.saveournet.ca - tubeguy, on 07/03/2009, -2/+1One wonders what Tesla would have to say about this.
- Johnbinarystar, on 07/03/2009, -3/+1Yahoo went wrong years ago.
Data-Centers! What a joke, they can't even support file sharing. They screwed up Briefcase so bad they had to end the service and put nothing to replace it. This is all just Board room chest beating designed to keep the current Pres and VPs in power long enough for thier golden parachutes to vest. - IronDonut, on 07/03/2009, -3/+0More greentard non-sense. I'm beginning to believe that greentards will believe literally anything. This is a fabrication of a PR company designed to make Yahoo look good. The reality is that the niagra power plant is a peak demand type plant that uses pumped storage. That means that it produces power during the few hours a day when the demand outstrips the coal fired base load power. Since servers run 24/7 the correct headline would be "New Yahoo data center to run on 20 hydro and 80 coal fired electricity"
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -6/+2It gets really cold and the water freezes though. :( but there are good clubs out on chippewa st. in buffalo. if you work for yahoo definitely go checkout LEVEL which may sound like a bandwidth provider its actually an ill club right across from sub zero.
Also on the plus side, though, tree is plentiful in the greater buffalo area and you can get to toronto in a minute - the girls there are very promiscuous ^_____^
lots of korean food too - Barackalypse, on 07/03/2009, -8/+3Yeah, well my data center is powered by unicorn farts and rainbows, out green that!
