This whole 2.0 thing is getting *way* out of hand. - roadtrippy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I'm running Family 1.4.3 rev1. It's very stable and rock solid security! Maybe I'll upgrade at 3.0.
- ledmatrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The article failed to mentioned HOW technology is helping families.
- Virak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Any bets on how long until everything will be upgraded to version 2.0 of 2.0?
- gfindlay, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I hate how everything is "2.0" now. Soon we'll have Dinnertime 2.0 - eating better with technology, Waking Up 2.0 - bedside gadgets to ease the pain, and Showering 2.0 - cut your clean time down to 10 seconds
- satansbanjo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3My parents don't use gadgets. Does that make me the weird kid?
- valis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Whizbang doohickery!
My dad said things like that and I'm 54. I've been in tech since training as an aviation electronics tech in the US Navy. Actually before that, too. I love this stuff. But a friend of mine once said something I thought was profound.
"Never fall in love with your tools. Love the work."
It's not the technology. It's what you do with it that matters. - cooperwd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What *****. A search engine and an ad agency commission a study and -- surprise! -- find that health and happiness are directly related to the amount of crap you buy. Puh-lease.
- steinhot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Now that they have discovered that families use their products do you think they can come up with a way for families to share and collaborate on My Yahoo!?
It seems that most every time I go to look at My Yahoo! my wife has used the computer in the interrum and is logged in causing me to go to 3 clicks of ads and re-login. It drives me crazy! and I'm sure she has the same complaint!
Can't they come up with a family version of My Yahoo! that has us all working together, maybe with a family calendar and tasks? - BobMysterioso, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What bugs me about technology, and dependence on, is people forget that they used to get along without it. I'm in no way saying technology can be replaced or has done nothing to foster more "family time" however it has its limits.
Lets take a stereotypical suburban family --
Mom and dad are constantly connected via cellphone, pda, magicwonderbox. Great. Dad, he works in IT, is remotely connected 24x7. Mom has a blackberry, she's a lawyer. How then, does this give them more time?
Dad can work all the time remotely, mom is always getting buzzed by the blackberry. Jimmy is starving because the can opener is rebooting (just kidding). I can see how collaborative calendars could help. I can see how cellphones and sms helps. But every aspect of technology does not give us more time. People have decided they *need* it, and so they used their cellphone at the grocery store. They blather on about nothing, while picking up peas and frozen corn. Why?
We, as a society, got along before all this whizbang doohickery. But now we are slaves to it. I hate cellphones and the best I've ever felt (since I started my professional career 5 years ago) was when I was on vacation, in the Caribbean, with no access to internet or email.
I work in a technical consulting firm as well as work too many freelance jobs. I'm about a tech as it gets, within reason, and I still feel this way. - Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Technology makes your life better! - BobMysterioso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I found wife 2.0 had new features and would do things previous versions wouldn't do.
- TugsMcgroin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All the members of my Family 2.0 keeps getting spam 1.0 about increasing the size of their XXXXX past 2.0. Why can't the 2.0 guys come up with spam fighting 2.0 to beat 1.0 and increase my families days to 20 hours?
- ReallyChili, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The 2.0 thing absolutely is getting out of hand, but even worse is when someon points this out and some guy replies with "WELL 1.9.5.6 rev8c34 LOLOLOLOLOL" or the like.
- foomojive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is why I like remote camping. No cell phone signal and no laptops or portable games allowed.
- DrStankus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1what sort of ancient computer are you using that doesn't allow you both to log in separately?
- kevinmotel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1my time spent cleaning is already ten seconds!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1 I hate cellphones and the best I've ever felt (since I started my professional career 5 years ago) was when I was on vacation, in the Caribbean, with no access to Internet or email.
That explains a lot.
While mom may have berry, dad and kid may have some other crap, and before some yells about technology degrading lives of families they should know that technology still helps them to stay connected. - steinhot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1A very ancient G5 2.5GHZ with only 4 gig of ram--I know almost a dinosaur.
If you must know the details, it sleeps all day long so it is takes only a second to wake it up to check her e-mail and start browsing. She's too lazy to log out of the mac but not too lazy to log out of Yahoo. Go figure. - umbriago, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0My wife left me, but once I upgraded to 2.0 she came back. Sheesh. You call that an improvement?
- Clemson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I recently upgraded to 2.0 RC1 and it is much better at resolving dependencies...
- hanmik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I bet the actual article does, this was just the press release. I would like to read the whole report.
- BobMysterioso, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0food replicator = food 2.0?
- veniv, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0I'm not sure if this will work. A healthy family usually doesn't involve too much technology!
