- valona, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8What is the point of Yahoo launching this site? They already own del.icio.us which is a great site, and they also have MyWeb. So they basically have 3 bookmarking sites. I had a look at the site, and its lovely, and all webby 2.0 etc with some truly useful features, but why don't they try and integrate them all into a single usable service across all their sites? The simplicity of del.icio.us, with the option of adding all the nice preview panels etc of the new service, topped off with a light sprinkling of unobtrusive text based advertising. Yahoo have a long history of not integrating their bought products into the fold properly. E-groups became the wretched Yahoo groups, Launch was ruined by them. And they can do stuff properly, take their awesome news and finance sites so its not incompetence.
Kudos for the site design and ease of use, not for the rational behind it. - thegoodtomchi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Hey digg -- I'm the product lead for both MyWeb and the new Bookmarks. I sit about 20 feet away from Joshua from del.icio.us, so it's not a case of product teams being out of sync. I like digg a lot, so I'll give you guys the real scoop:
The MyWeb service (despite having many happy, dedicated users) didn't have the brand equity that delicious has in social bookmarking. What it does have is a scalable, stable, and feature-rich architecture that will serve as the unified platform for bookmarks at Yahoo. Our current move basically took our *four* services: Old Yahoo Bookmarks, MyWeb1, MyWeb2, and del.icio.us -- and reduced them to 3. With Old bookmarks becoming New Bookmarks, and MyWeb1 shortly being migrated. Soon, we'll take 3 and boil it down to 2, as we prepare very comfortable migration paths for MyWeb2 users into either delicious or Bookmarks.
Now the only remaining question is: Why have two? What you probably don't know is that Yahoo Bookmarks already has 20 million users, and we found that those users aren't really keen to be in delicious just yet. Likewise, I think delicious users would not really enjoy being swamped by Yahoo Bookmarks users, who on average are as tech-savvy or tech-focused as delicious users are.
I posted this on techcrunch, but I'll paste it here for this audience as well:
========
Here’s an analogy that might help a bit:
Let’s say you ran a restaurant, and every day 21 customers came to eat. 20 of them always order mashed potatoes and 1 always orders french fries. One day you update the mashed potato recipe based on what your 20 customers said they’d like…
This makes the fry guy angry. “Why did you use all that energy to make mashed potatoes better? I though I made it clear that *I* like french fries.”
The fry guy is actually a pretty smart fellow, and he offers the following argument next: “Look. I know that underneath it all, fries and mashed potatoes are made out of the same stuff! Why not just combine them into a superdish? Or just make everyone eat fries. That would work too.”
At this point, a 22nd customer enters the restaurant. He sees fries and mashed potatoes on the menu and says: “Sheesh, how am I supposed to know what to order? You guys have both fries AND mashed potatoes.”
The owner responds: “Actually, everything is free, so you can try both and discover which you like… we’ve found most people that eat mashed potatoes don’t really like fries and vice versa.”
Actually, writing this just made me hungry :) — but I think the point is pretty clear. Even if was only the difference between curly fries and steak fries, there’s no reason to make everyone eat just one thing when you have dedicated customers that like each. Anyhow, sorry for the long comment, but so many people have had the same question I figured it was time to set the record straight. - TechnoPops, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Well, Yahoo! own del.icio.us, so... maybe?
- sophiaperennis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"The new Bookmarks product is also integrated with a new version of Yahoo Toolbar for Internet Explorer, allowing for one-click bookmarking. Searches on the Toolbar search bar also auto-complete to suggest bookmarks stored for that user."
I would like to see Firefox 2.0 support for this one-click bookmarking feature. - Desolite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7i don't know how yet... but i foresee adware sites using this feature to add their sites to your bookmarks like 100x
- unloud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5The new version looks and works VERY slick.....I kept on trying to figure out why the site looked so clean and refined compared to the other things we see from Yahoo!, and then I realized what was different: no ads. Hopefully this stays this way, but I doubt that will be the case. :-(
- omatsei, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It does, you just have to install the Yahoo Toolbar... See toolbar.yahoo.com/firefox.
- thegoodtomchi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hordak, Firefox toolbar support is in the works. We'll make an announcement when it's ready.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's confusing (not the site)! Too many stuff from the same company doing the same thing. What is MyWeb2? What is BookMark? What is Del.Icio.us? All same people trying to dow the same thing.
When I first heard of the Bookmark site, I thought it was going to get the sites that I bookmarked (favorites) with Y! toolbar, in an organized way. But instead it is MyWeb2. I think they suck, I don't tend to use this service because it is getting ridiculously confuse.
Maybe the term bookmark can work good for other sites, but it is a pain in the butt when you identified something with a name and used it before, then the service has shifted but kept the same name.
So what happens with my bookmark (favorites)? I guess I'm still gon' be using the tool.
But it is confusing when one company is using the same name for several several service, or services that kinda related to each other but still can't be together.
Sorry Yahoo! I used to love you, but now I'm with Goggle. They are doing better move. - Schug, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I realize that Google is still freaking GOOGLE, but Yahoo seems to have a lot of better services now. I've been finding myself using is more often. Not to mention I surf the web on Flock, owned by Yahoo.
- isuisorisuaint, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3meh...pretty soon i'm going to need a bookmark manager that manages all the sites where my bookmarks are stored.
- Hercules, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'll stick with Foxmarks -- any Firefox PC I have gets my bookmarks. It's pretty simple to me.
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You don't need the toolbar at all. All you need (for FF) it to add the 'bookmarklets' link to your bookmarks menu...then when you want to add to the yahoo bookmarks, you click that, it initiates a javascript and voila, it's added.
- citizensagainst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree with you up to the Google part. Google and Yahoo are neck and neck for me, however, I tend to go to Yahoo. I prefer their beta mail over Gmail. Yahoo needs to be very clear about what they plan on doing with del.icio.us and flickr because like you say, there's too much redundancy. Why not just reskin del.icio.us and integrate with My Web? Why not just get rid of Yahoo photos and use flickr? I don't understand their business decisions at all.
- utcursch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You'll find all your MyWeb bookmarks under the "My Bookmarks" tab -- so this is not exactly a third bookmarking site from Yahoo!. No idea about del.icio.us integration though.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nothing comes close to del.icio.us...Not even Yahoo My Web..So I will stick with it now.
- RADicalSatDude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was concerned this would happen, Yahoo! MyWeb2 has the same annoying problem, there is No 'Delete All bookmarks' or 'share all bookmarks' option in either one of them.
Atleast in the old one I could select all or indvidual folders quickly all on page, Bulk deletion or sharing is very hard if you have hundreds of bookmarks. - Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There's an option to tell them (the developers) what you think. I sent a request that all bookmarks can be displayed on one page, why don't you request what you want?
- thewhitefedora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As long as they don't get rid of, or dumb down del.icio.us. I love del.icio.us alot, and it could use a feature or two, but I don't want to have to get a yahoo account, or have yahoo style on del.icio.us. I'd actually prefer Google acquired it instead of yahoo(though it would have been awesome without anyone acquiring too.). At least the del.icio.us look and feel is similar to Google's.
- AbhishekGoyal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, I just tried exporting those bookmarks to XML and it generating a broken XML file. Don't Yahoo have enough money to hire a testing team.
- hordak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like the new bookmarks site, but I was hoping it would tie into the current Yahoo! toolbar (like the old bookmarks site). I know there will be an updated toolbar for IE (I'm on Firefox) to take advantage of some new integrated features. Frankly said, all i really want to do is organize my bookmarks on the site and have those updates show up in my toolbar - which isn't happening with the new bookmarks site (works fine in the old one). So, I guess it's back to the old bookmarks site for the time being.
- CoreBurn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Question on the new page.. Why do all of the links on the page, like at the top "Tools Preferences Help" and the bottom "FAQ & Blog" all just link back to http://beta.bookmarks.yahoo.com/ ?
- 4815162342, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I dont undersatnd why they would do this instead of just use del.ico.us which they acquired.
- stfarm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Is it better then google bookmarks?
- waz67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, no, all that stuff (ok, with the exception of notes) is related to to bookmarks. The pictures thing is for bookmarking pictures (it shows you a thumbnail and links to the web picture, plus has options for iterating through a series of pictures by substituting a range of numbers in the URL). The problem I see with the yahoo solution is that it's too simplified. It might be fine for smaller bookmark collections, but for people with thousands of bookmarks and frequent needs to share them and store and classify new ones, it falls short. With iFaves, for example, you can select any tag or combination of tags to appear on your home page. You view your bookmarks ordered by when you bookmarked them, who you shared them with, who you received them from, etc. You can send a bookmark to multiple contacts simply by tagging it with a single tag. You can share a tag with someone, which allows them to see all the bookmarks you've tagged in a certain way. It's much more flexible and useful.
- RADicalSatDude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have sent feedback reports several times, about this missing feature. I guess no one else feels the need to delete anything sensetive that might be shared to the public.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I like the use of bookmarklets for this, but the interface is not simple enough. Since del.icio.us updated their FF extension today just as this was announced, I'm wondering if this is tied together. It's just silly that the two aren't merged somehow. Maybe use bookmarks.yahoo.com for the pretty view, and del.icio.us for the simpler view and both accessing the same backend.
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great post, hopefully it'll answer a few questions for some. Now...about displaying them all on one page, or having an option to choose how many are displayed per page :D :P
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ssooooo......it's a 'web organiser'? that's what i bloody said. :| ;)
- gu014, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i'll stick with del.icio.us
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not everyone uses firefox, and that number falls even lower when you enter 'public computer' territory.
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You can import/export all your del.icio.us stuff too.
- kiseki, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1If you read the comments from the Yahoo guys, they are apparently phasing out MyWeb and keeping Bookmarks for personal sites and delicious for the social thing and all on the same backend. Makes sense to me.
- MonkeyMonk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Just imported my bookmarks from the old site, and I've got to agree--pretty darn slick. Not too sure about the whole 'suggestion' thing, though.
- deusx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Congrats on the new Bookmarks launch! My wife loves mashed potatoes. Personally, I'll take some delicious french fries, please. Tasty and easy to share. :)
(Groans forwarded to /dev/null.) - Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Depends.
Google bookmarks is excellent because it's a 'get the job done' service, there's no faffing about, it's a simple interface etc and you can more or less guarantee it'll always be accessible (same with Yahoo though).
Yahoo on the other hand offer a better way to manage them as well as display them (Yahoo includes a thumbnail). Both have advantages. - Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@CoreBurn: No they don't. :P
It's not something that's been 'fixed' since your post, especially taking into account i used the tools option to import my FF bookmarks (half a day before you asked the question...and they still link to their respective pages) it's a problem that isn't even there.. - freebrowsers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yahoo bookmarks are very similar to Blink list..the only difference I can note is the logo and the menu bar with add/edit/delete options. We can say, it's one step ahead of Blinklist.com. Here is my Blinklist: http://www.blinklist.com/freebrowsers/

- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Pales in comparison". if ifaves has all the stuff you mentioned, then it's not a bookmarks site, it's some sort of 'web organiser'.
I personally don't want all that crap, i want somewhere i can go to when I'm on another comp and have access to all my bookmarks (and for those times when my bookmarks get hosed, it has an import/export function). nice try at making it sound lame, but you done quite the opposite, you made it sound functional without garbage. - beejay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1(edit) already said. i can't read :-P
- DCMacHead, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1That wheel has already been invented. It's called del.icio.us.
- andaya, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yep with the HP deal they this toolbar is going to be powerful. The pieces are in place.
- waz67, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Ok, so it's all web 2.0ified, but still not nearly as feature-filled as http://www.ifaves.com, which does support rss, tags, notes, pictures, and numerous other things beyond this Yahoo attempt, which really pales in comparison.
- delisimo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Now combine this with an RSS reader and Bob will be Yahoo!'s Uncle.
- matrixneo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1del.icio.us will be integrated into Yahoo pretty soon. http://cosmonica.blogspot.com/2006/10/yahoo-bookmarks-fully-revamped.html
- ianhobbies, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3this will make del.icio.us worry?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4delicious is crap
