- KingDork, on 03/17/2009, -1/+7Y combinator pays you 5k and then 5k per person for about 6 to 10% of your company?????
Am I the only person who thinks this is laughable? Who on earth would give up 10% of your company for 5k per person??? Unless you have 20 founders this is absurd. - seekely, on 03/18/2009, -1/+6Giving up stock is not always about obtaining money, and the value of YCombinator is hardly in the money. It is in the connections, Paul Graham and crew, all the YCombinator alumns, opportunity to pitch to hundreds of good investors, the weekly dinners, the incredible amounts of solid advice and support, all the legal help, and the experience of starting a company from scratch with twenty other sets of ridiculously talented people. Personally, going through YCombinator with Habit Industries (http://www.habitindustries.com) was more than worth the 'laughable' 6-10%. Two years in the running, maaaaaaybe we would have made it this far without YCombinator, but I can tell you for a fact I don't miss or regret what we gave to YCombinator for even a split second, as they have given us a fair bit more in value.
The number of doubters of the YCombinator model are prevalent, but I think you would be hard pressed to find a YCombinator company that doesn't feel the same way mine does. - one504, on 03/17/2009, -0/+5It pays to have cash in a weak economy - it's surprising how much investment capital is sitting around in cash, right now.
- calcio0fan, on 03/18/2009, -0/+3A poor recent college grad with a crazy idea that just might work
- cubicledrone, on 03/17/2009, -1/+4$2 million for new companies.
$700 billion for bailouts.
Kind of makes you want to wave the flag, eh? Oh, and they had to like get a big group of people together to raise the $2 million too. Wow. - vbgamer45, on 03/18/2009, -0/+35k is nothing. I laughed when I read that. That may for expenses for one month and then they get 6% to 10%. Hell I would give the same amount for 10% of someone's potential awesome idea.
- skinny01, on 03/18/2009, -0/+2Only 5k and you have to pay for your living expenses in their area for the time out of that? That leaves nothing for prototyping, etc.
- axiomflash, on 03/18/2009, -0/+2yeah i was thinking the same thing. what's the deal? the startups we work with receive 2 million+ for just a year of work
- IKbot, on 03/18/2009, -0/+2@skinny01 I was in YC. Living expenses is all there is to pay for when making a web application.
- jebudas, on 03/18/2009, -0/+1Anyone know of a YCombinator type organization in NYC? I dont want to move to San Fran! (no offense SF, but I already gotta life out here!).
- supercandy, on 03/20/2009, -0/+1interesting read.
thanks... - Drizzit, on 03/18/2009, -0/+1Agreed, DropBox is another Y combinator product and I'm sure they do not regret it as well. I sure as hell do not.
- jebudas, on 03/18/2009, -0/+1Thanks!
- Andrewi709, on 03/18/2009, -0/+1@jebudas, competitors to YCombinator include <a class="user" href="http://www.launchboxdigital.com" rel="nofollow">http://www.launchboxdigital.com</a> and <a class="user" href="http://www.techstars.com" rel="nofollow">http://www.techstars.com</a> on the East Coast.
- inactive, on 03/18/2009, -0/+1So are we talking $2 mil over 40-60 companies? 30 to 50k per business might be fine for a mom-and-pop pastry shop. But a tech company? Yeah, I'll take the $2 million. What else ya got?
- inactive, on 03/18/2009, -0/+1Most of these people have original websites. 30k is more than enough to pay for hosting, advertising, freelance help while working on the site yourself when you're not working a part-time job.
- bieber, on 03/18/2009, -1/+1Apples to oranges. Y Combinator is an organization that has been funding startups long before the recession, and continues to do so just the same regardless. These aren't bailouts, they're business as usual.
- cubicledrone, on 03/18/2009, -1/+1If you'll look WAY up, you'll see the point flying over your region of Earth.
- inactive, on 03/17/2009, -5/+0Two MILLLLLLLLL-EEEEE-YON!!!
- appleuzer, on 03/18/2009, -6/+1Whatever, y-combinators ventures suck. midVentures Chicago has wayyy cooler ventures and a brighter outlook, i also hear that this iphone 3.0 announcement might cause them to go iphone only...
- williepepper, on 03/18/2009, -5/+0So now we're in throw as much cash up against the wall and see what stiks?
Well, either throw it against the wall or have Uncle Sam take it away.
You could dig a hold and bary it but then you'd be littering, useless environmentalists will fine you and find you.
