Listen, I appreciate the efforts of top diggers like TheAttacks as much as anyone, but this has me rolling my eyes. - keesj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28But do you actually use those advanced features? I don't.
- drgori, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Microsoft's not worried. Google may have word processing and spreadsheet capabilities, but they're years away from figuring out how to clone Clippy.
- mikechml, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20Because your documents are available when you're at school/work/etc. where you may not have access to your favourite office apps, or you don't have the means to transfer the documents you need.
- webbunny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14yes
- KriLL3.2™, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Writely (beta)™ :>
- innerspirit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10isnt writely web based? i wonder how you managed to miss the front page notice then :P

"hey, it looks like you're making a comment. Would you like help with that?"
* clicks no *
"hey, it looks like you're making a comment. Would you like help with that?"
... yeah ok, clippy was crap. - MrKite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Why would your business use an online world processor for all your documents that are confidential? Your clients would be pissed.
- KriLL3.2™, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Looks fine to me
- Johnatton, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10"We realize it's quite popular to stay in beta test indefinitely."
Hahaha. - chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14have you ever used Word or Excel?
there a little more advanced than Writley and Gspread - alwaysmc2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@ drgori
Do you know how happy I am that clippy died in Office 2007? SO HAPPY! :D - chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7FYI - the symbols that are not in there are Greek letters - pretty much essential if writing a scientific paper.
- sbrown123, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Just use Camino instead (http://www.caminobrowser.org/). IMHO its a better browser for Mac users.
- therernospoons, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7It's still not yet streamlined with the other Google products, and requires a separate login and password from your standard Google account.
- bcaulfield, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11"No invatations needed"
No speling either ;-) ... good to see a felow bad speller out there! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yet another digg post with excessive use of excitement. Hey kids, stop exclamation mark abuse.
- kazem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Writely recommends creating an account with them using your google e-mail. At least that's what they said in their blog.
- iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Firefox 2.0 beta working great with it, even compared it using IE 6 - no probs
- hotpepper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I've been using it for over a year and have never had a problem in Firefox.
- vvaduva, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It would be nice to have some APIs available for this so it can be integrated by third party sites...
- progolferyo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Can someone explain this for me. I've been using Writely for a while, even before Google got a hold on it, and I honestly think its a pretty good product, although there are some major improvements that could be made. But why would Google buy it, shut down registration for months, and then release it, with relatively nothing changed. It seems to me like the least they could have done was release it as part of their own site, integrated on their own site, with their Google look and feel.
If they wanted to go a step further, they could have added several features because this product has no hope without mass improvements. They should have either released an accompanying API so that 3rd party sites could easily incorporate some type of text processing in their own sites. Or if they didn't want this, at least release and integrate it with Google Spreadsheets, so that they start to approach the vitality of an Office Suite. I just don't get how they see this entity becoming successful. Any other ideas? - progolferyo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Digg does have a spell checker
- KriLL3.2™, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You seen what it says a little bit down on that page?
"If you are working to fix problems with a specific browser and would like to bypass this check, just add &browserok=true to the end of the Writely url.
Please note that it is a violation of intergalactic law to use this parameter under false pretenses, so don't let us catch you at it."
Just do that and Opera should be fine? - kazem, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13It works perfectly in Opera 9.0.
I wrote how in my "blog". http://my.opera.com/kedmond/blog/ - kazem, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I just posted above, but just to be clear. Writely works VERY well in Opera 9.0!
Again, Writely works in Opera. You have to mask your browser as Mozilla or IE. Writely did not work with 8.5, so it's a legacy blocker.
To get instructions on how to get Writely to work on Opera, go to my blog.
http://my.opera.com/kedmond/blog/ - mrtrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Should we be concerned that writely does not appear to use SSL?
- mikesherov, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Opera and Safari don't have "edit mode", making WYSIWYG editors much much more difficult to implement.... which is exactly why Writely doesn't support those browsers.
- AugustZephyr, on 10/12/2007, -9/+12Look out microsoft! Your nemesis google has just duped your money maker office applications: Excel and Word.
- drwtsn32, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"But do you actually use those advanced features? I don't."
Maybe you don't, but many users do. I use Excel to pull data from an Access database. And I often do mail merge from Word (again from an Access database). Or I have my Access database parse email orders from Outlook and create new records.
Personally I can't switch from MS Office to OpenOffice...let alone oen of these web-based applications. They're nice but only contain the most rudimentary word processing/spreadsheet features. - panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3All you "advanced features" guys are missing two significant points: the Google products are adequate for most home users, and they are free. The home user segment is the fastest expanding segment of the industry.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6you have NO idea...
writely does not much more than Word 2. - Subcranium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Spell different.
- riah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There might be some. I know netvibes.com has some Writely integration, at least through RSS.
- CheeseheadDave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Writely: Blocked by WebSense (Personal network storage and backups)
- alwaysmc2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I don't know if I could live without the synonyms on right click.
- cawpin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why bother? Because I don't want to be thrown into a giant cauldron of soup.
- rnmrnmrnm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1opera 9 > F12 > site preferences > network > mask as firefox
gtalk in gmail, writely and gcal work this way
google just tries to ditch opera. it was expected. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4they just rewrote the backend in the previous months. the front-end will hopefully be reworked and googlified and safari-enabled in the next months.
but, safari still is not yet up with modern browsers in terms of advanced ajax-support. - KriLL3.2™, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Cant either browser do what Firefox can? Use IE's rendering engine in one tab for that oddball site that doesn't work with anything without a M$ stamp on it? (IETab addon) And kazem, one blog link is more than enough.
- Captkidd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Opera should not have to be masked to work with Writely. I've tested this and it doesn't run properly in Opera anyway. Some function's do not work as they should (certain text formatting). I was angry at first that it didn't work with Opera, but then found that when visiting http://www.writely.com/?browserok=true, it allows me to access writely. However, like I said, it doesn't work properly which is probably the reason Google has denied access to Opera users. I was starting to think that the Opera denial was deliberate - which made me angry. Maybe they just haven't done it right yet. Opera is too good to compromise on.
- aptiva, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Which is kinda strange because when I changed the user agent for safari and visited it like that, Mostly everything seemed to work (perfectly usable anyway)
although there were a menu or 2 that refused to open - panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No. SSL is not going to protect you from someone attacking the backend and slurping up all your files.
- aisling73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They do. Go to file, select save as and choose PDF.
- vandy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you know what, for running around campus to work on papers this is excellent. i mean, if you dont have a laptop, you can log-on from any computer, add notes, edit a part of a paper, save research. i'd say this would be a very useful tool for students.
- jon1012, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Do not invatate my planet, you greenish crap !" says google opponent whose name will be kept secret.
- TeKoverride, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am pretty sure writely or gspreadsheets isn't intended for business use. I myself only use Gspreadsheets for keeping track of minor things in a quick fashion. Since everyone usually has a browser up on the computer all time anyways why not make a spreadsheet or word processor browser based.
- rosswinn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1either that, or you need to jump in to the new century.
