- bhattsan, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22he was offered one by Steve, but he WANTED to stand in line...
- adml_shake, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16Well what you have to remember is that Woz is a people person. He likes being out in the crowds, so he was just as excited as everyone else to wait in line for the thing. I seriously doubted that he was upset at all over not getting a freebie.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -6/+17Steve Wozniak on open source "I consider it a moral right-ness. I don't know how to speak for everybody in society about necessities. But I think it's very honorable and it's very good for the customers. "
@thinkingserious: What a ***** description for this story when Wozniak point out his thoughts about DRM and FLOSS. - br0ken1128, on 10/11/2007, -3/+9They did offer him an iPhone but he turned it down because he said he wanted to experience the launch .. he was 1st in line :) .. he chose to buy and wait ..
- cvrti5, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Woz 4 Prez!
- cambrown99, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I loved the idea of using a flexible display and Google Earth to create an interactive globe. Genius.
- fentanyl, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Get your facts right. Jobs offered Woz an iPhone, but he turned the offer down saying he prefered waiting in line.
edit: http://digg.com/apple/No_Thanks_Steve_Woz_Waits_in_line_Like_Everyone_Else - OmegaNine, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I normally skim of most articals on here (if I read them all thats all I would be doing all day) but this is worth the read. Click threw to the story on this one guys,
- corporalclegg24, on 10/11/2007, -6/+10You don't do *****, you could never make a product as good as that. You probably don't own one, and read on apple discussions all the problems. Who gives a ***** what you think. The product is out, that's it. Get over it, they aren't going to stop selling the product because it has some bugs.
- destinyland, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Maybe Steve Wozniak is tinkering with the web server in his garage.
By the way, the site is back up now.... - takamalak, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Even in the face of evidence to the contrary, you continue to hold on to you idiotic beliefs. You lose in life, monkeyboy.
- destinyland, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6That was really interesting.
I've always heard about Woz's "love of pranks" -- but I like how he explained where it came from. His teenaged shyness, and his refusal to conform. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"Its sad to build a company and let a dumbass manage and destroy it."
Steve Jobs a 'dumbass' that 'destroyed Apple'. Are you out of your mind? Steve Jobs bring Apple back to business. He SAVED Apple. Woz never was an 'enterprise guy' he was more like the hacker behind the success, and that was years ago.... - mthode, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2http://duggmirror.com
- nape, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3as much as i am against drm, it is a bit ridiculous to compare mp3 sharing to passing a newspaper around. first of all, if i pass a newpaper on to a friend, unless i go to the trouble of xeroxing it or something, i lose my copy. not true for sharing mp3s. also, newspapers become dated within a day usually, not leaving much desire to have that issue after that day. whereas music tends to last a bit longer, im guessing most people enjoy mp3s that have been out longer than a day...
- karn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2http://www.diggmirror.com
- Atomic1fire, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2and now its down again
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This "woz" person is anti-Apple. OFF WITH HIS HEAD!
- paulmike3, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Something troubling I sense in you, young Padawan...
- mentor972, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I agree. He WAS offered one, but refused.
- pickerin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Woz was on TWiT. He clearly stated that Jobs offered him a free iPhone. The reason he waited in line, as he stated himself, was that he wanted to get two more for children and friend's children.
As for "inventing the PC". I guess that all depends on what you mean when you say "Personal Computer". He didn't invent the *computer*, but the "Personal Computer"? That could be argued both ways. - gojeda, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Nope, the PC was around before the Altair made on the scene. Jim Fassanito, who was working for a company called CTC between 1969 and 1972, is the person who invented the PC which, incidentally, used first genuine CPU that was the precursor to the 8008.
- jasarien, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1Woz never built the company, he just made the machines. It was entirely Jobs' idea to start selling them.
- insomniac8400, on 10/11/2007, -4/+4Its 100% that he already had them, or was offered them. He wasn't forced to stand in line. But that means because of him someone else in that line didn't get their iphone.(assuming the store sold out, which since the iphone is a dud, it most likely didn't)
- jmo14, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Actually if you read any books they will credit him with inventing the modern PC as we know it with a monitor and keyboard. Before this they were just boxes with blinking lights that didn't mean much to the common person, whereas Woz invented something that was usable to most common people. So yea if you consider feeding tape into an Altair a good PC then I guess there were some PC's around before Woz.
- Firehed, on 10/11/2007, -4/+35 is a good day.
Of course, they're only starting to bug me now because I already bought mine. - pyroh, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1yawn
- Disjunto, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1i want to digg this, but the title is incredibly misleading, article is about Woz and pranks with a tiny bit about opensource and drm, and about half an answer about iPhone
- SupaFupa, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Not sure if steve wozniak was high during this interview, or just thought they wouldn't post the video of the Colbert Report, but if anyone was practicing Nailientology, it was Stephen Colbert. Wozniak refers to some of Colbert's pauses and slight breaks in character as a being pranked, but it seems more like Colbert is just making fun of him, and mocking him for being so weird. Colbert's laughing AT you, not WITH you
@mtwolf: I agree with you 100%. I watched him speak at the Maker Faire this year, and all he could talk about was how awesome he was. - gojeda, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1I like Woz, but he "invented the PC"? On what f-ing planet?
BURIED for his inaccurate book title. - thebonobo, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1and why did he not get one until Saturday? and only one? Bow Down to Jobs.
- nationalist, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1lol it's down
- turpenine, on 10/11/2007, -6/+2this story need to say in big bold letters, HE WAS OFFERED A FREEBEE BUT WANTED TO STAND IN LINE, PLEASE DO NOT POST ABOUT THIS PLZKTHX.
- Topher06, on 10/11/2007, -4/+0Woz is a twit, for sure. Everytime Apple makes news, Woz is there commenting on it like he had anything to do with Apple's success in the last decade. Pretty much the Mac he helped invent is completely gone, both software and hardware wise, now replaced with an OS based on Steve Job's NeXT and BSD, and the Mac is now off the shelf PC components in a fancy form factor. His ego surpasses Steve Jobs by infinite amounts, at least Steve Job's has a reason to be arrogant, he's actually making innovative technology and getting rich off of it, what has Woz done lately besides cash in his Apple dividends and leach off their success?
- hawkspur, on 10/11/2007, -11/+6Is anyone else tired of stories about the iphone?
It's getting to the point where there are 5 on the front page every day. - insomniac8400, on 10/11/2007, -10/+4NOT!
- mtwolf, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2I would love to hear the the word count of the words "I", "me", "mine". Makes Woz sound very self absorbed. He may be a great guy, but I keep getting the feeling that he is trying to impress me with his "greatness".
- implied, on 10/11/2007, -10/+3This interview sucked
- thebonobo, on 10/11/2007, -15/+8great interview. poor Woz. such a nice guy, that's obvious. i get the sense that Jobs is a bit of dick to him. i mean, without Woz, Jobs is nothing, and yet the guy has to stand in line to get a freakin' iPhone? the shame.
- insomniac8400, on 10/11/2007, -9/+2Woz is a jackass for pretending to wait in line for the iphone. He has had them for months, his whole family most definitely has. Just dumb to pretend to not have them. And if it was true that he hadn't seen one until buying one in line, he is a ***** idiot. Its impossible that no one beta tested these.
- insomniac8400, on 10/11/2007, -12/+3Sadly it just meant less iphones for the customers, woz is a loser for seceding to jobs. Its sad to build a company and let a dumbass manage and destroy it.
- thebonobo, on 10/11/2007, -10/+1then why did he have his friends also buy their quota of phones? if he was just in it for the spectacle, that wasn't necessary. doesn't add up. i suspect he's just being polite to Jobs by saying he was offered one.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -28/+11I love how the mac fanboys defend the iPhone by saying "Oh it's only version 1, they will include the features via software updates"
First of all, that is NOT an excuse. Where has apple been all this time and what has it been doing? Unlike the music player industry when iPod first came out, the cell phone market is very mature. Various companies have set high standards. How can apple leave out stuff that everyone including Steve Jobs take for granted is incredible. Examples include mass deletion of emails and sending a text message to multiple recipients in one go.
Second of all, does it make business sense for apple to release all these new features for free? No, it doesn't. Apple has a history of making loyal fanboys buy new versions for tiny improvements in features. Sure they will release free bug fixes. But fixing the huge list of feature omissions? That's for iPhone v2.
And third of all, by that time, the competitors will have released even superior products.
