You underestimate my desire for hotdogs. - darkened, on 10/11/2007, -2/+35Isn't eMusic substantially larger than this?
- tyggy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+24World's largest indie music store would be a little more fair title :)
- vertinox, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19eMusic also doesn't hurt my eye with neon green pastels either.
- dpak2000, on 10/11/2007, -5/+24Who says they are the largest MP3 store? They have 1,300,000, emusic has 2 million.
- Rickard, on 10/11/2007, -1/+16Correct. emusic is larger (approx. 2 million songs). Buried as inaccurate.
- Doug3242, on 10/11/2007, -4/+18I think allofmp3 was bigger.
- Depthfunction, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14Wow that site sucks. Their selection is awful. I just finished searching for about a dozen different indie bands, and none of them are available.
Arcade Fire? No.
Joanna Newsom? No.
New Pornographers? No.
Kristin Hersh? No.
Love Is All? No.
Low? No.
Etc.
Call me when their selection is substantially better. - Blisshead, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13I would buy a 40 hot dog monthly plan. I also use eMusic though, so I guess that follows.
- blueluck, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8The artist gets 59 of of the 88 cents?
I haven't paid for recorded music in more than ten years, and I'm going to start now. I don't care if they have the best selection, the worst selection, or nothing but polka, a distributer is finally paying the artist more than they're keeping for themselves, and I love that.
The artist gets 59 of of the 88 cents! - djbelieve, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9In addition to having more mp3s eMusic works out to be less expensive.
- paulmdx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7"and has indie artists you've heard of"
I don't know about eMusic, but PayPlay has a pretty useful 'like' search so you can find music you like based on commercial artists. I don't know any indie artists; I'm not down the kids... - localzuk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Please read the description - they sell indie mp3's - ie. independent, ie. not signed with major labels.
- TotalTutorials, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8removed comment
- monkeybacon, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I will stick with eMusic until something better comes a long.
Top changes I would make to eMusic:
1. Roll over of your monthly downloads, right now if you don't use them you lose them, this totally sucks.
2. Offer per track or album downloads without a monthly subscription, (but at a higher price per track if need be).
3. Pay artists a little more in hopes of signing more. - GoshaM, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Probably because $8.88 is the price for the album. If album has more than 10 songs you are getting a better deal buying the whole album instead of individual songs. When album has less than 10 songs, you can buy then one by one ...
- loki440, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6@gerald
What are you complaining about? Yeah it's subscription based, but for $14.99 a month you can get 50 songs that are
1. DRM free
2. Ripped at high quality VBR
3. Your forever
Plus when you sign up you can get 25 additional songs for FREE with no commitment. Is that a bad deal? - MercedRocks, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Exactly:
"The recommendation system is the key to PayPlay, since it's unlikely you've heard of most of the artists in their catalog. The artists self-identify, citing their musical influences. Searches for better-known artists -- David Byrne, Tom Waits, Talking Heads -- yielded less fruit: there were so many artists in the search results and many of them appeared to be quite adept at, um, hiding the extent to which they were influenced by some of my favorite acts."
Plus does 1.3 million really make them the largest? - snagz, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7Do all of the hot dogs expire when you stop paying?
- mywhitenoise, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5What the *****? And those are the more "mainstream" indie bands.
- airwalkery2k, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4@snagz
eMusic MP3's do not expire. Your membership simply does, which means you can't download 30+ new MP3's in the following month, nothing more. - gerald, on 10/11/2007, -11/+15emusic is a subscription service, not a store. store is where you can buy one track or one album and walk out.
when you go to a hotdog stand you want to buy just one or two hotdogs, you don't want to get a 40-hotdog monthly plan until you cancel. - angusm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Having recently become an eMusic fan-boy, I'd add that when I search for something on eMusic, I quite often find what I'm looking for, whereas whenever I search for something on PayPlay I tend to get "We don't have X, but we have nnn artists like X." I haven't yet found anything I want to buy on PayPlay, whereas I liked eMusic enough to start paying them $10/month.

- elchuy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3buried as inaccurate. 1.5 Million albums does not make it the worlds largest online music store. It doesn't even make it the worlds larges online indie music store.
- MikeOSX, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Uh yeah, none of my search subjects were found.
- Shawnosaurus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Depth, thanks for the list =) I plugged all those into my Yahoo music engine and am now enjoying some sweet new indie music this morning. Love Is All is my fave so far I think. Thanks!
- jimosity, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3AWESOME!
My band sells our CDs thru CDBaby and we use their digital distribution and this MP3 store already has both of our discs listed on their site!
PLUS they have the ability to create cool widgets to promote your stuff with! - schoate09, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4***** the RIAA.
- kcopp87, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4@MercedRocks:
iTunes doesn't sell MP3s, they sell protected 128kbps AAC files.
Of course, if you count today, they're selling EMI's stuff in unprotected 256kbps AAC. Still not MP3 though. - tuxedup, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2What exactly is limited about the music collection? Is it because you are not going to find Smashing Pumpkins or Slayer on there?
From what I can see this site doesn't tout it's self as a store where you are going to find the big name bands.
I do not see anything limited about the music collection, 1.5 millions tracks is not to be sniffed at, even if you don't know the artists. Thats 1.5 million tracks you could potentially love. - ceralor, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I like the site cause it doesn't need a subscription, eMusic does.
- smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2this site is for unsigned bands i guess, not bands on indie labels. a signed indie band will already be on iTunes, eMusic, Amoeba records, etc. automatically through their label's distributor (if it's a decent label). i think the nice thing about this site is supposed to be the high split for the artist--$0.59 per track, as opposed to the 7% that artists get on average from iTunes sales. this is great for unsigned bands who want to sell their music online, especially considering that iTunes isn't nearly as friendly towards indie artists.
i think the point of the search is so you can find other artists on there that are similar to your tastes. if you read the article, it states that you're not likely to be familiar with most of the bands on there, so it's more of a music discovery method of finding new music. - skeeterflea, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I think if we as a society (or paying customers whatever you prefer) want to see reform in the music industry or a change in the basic business model. We should be willing to embrace sites like www.payplay.com. We need to open up our minds. This is an excellent site for artists and consumers alike. If you don't like being forced to pay $15 to $20 for a cd by the industry at your local Wal-Mart, and also share that dissatisfaction with the butterfly effect of the RIAA. Then don't bitch about not being able to find an artist on one of the major record labels.
If you don't see your favorite artist listed... find a new one. Seriously.
/Rant=0 - tuxedup, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3The website does not seem to bad. Okay so its likely you will not have heard of a lot of the bands on there, but that's why they have the 30 seconds preview of each song.
I only had a small look around the site, but I have found a few bands in the metal section that I quite like. For example Van Canto, they sound pretty good even though its 5 singers and drums, no guitar etc, its an interesting concept.
The payment methods are quite good too. For non-us like myself I can pay via google checkout or paypal. So there two secure payment methods.
Offering MP3 and WMA is nice as well. Hopefully they will offer the catalog in OGG or FLAC in the future. I wouldn't mind paying more for the songs in FLAC format.
I shall certainly be using the service in the coming weeks to build up my music collection. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2it's all about whats on the net
http://www.seeqpod.com
forget these old music stores - corripio, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4This site looks like a pretty cool place for indie music...the design is pretty nice and I don't have to get crappy WMA. Even if you hate the DRM of the iTunes store, Apple still did a great job on store itself that really makes almost every other service look like it was made by 13 year old in 1998. This site is actually usuable.
- mudfly, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2digg up for the mention of Kyuss!
- SteveMax, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1"I think allofmp3 was bigger."
"Was"? It's still up! - aporia, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1- monkeybacon
These ideas would be great for eMu. I have lost some money by not using all my downloads for the month.
I know absolutely none of the music on Payplay, It doesn't even have some of the smaller indie labels that I like, ones that are so small that I cant find on them on eMusic. Along with not having a big selection of music I know, payplay doesn't have reviews by someone who knows music. I don't mind downloading stuff I don't know but I like to have a review of the music to go to by. They also have limited genres. No Post-punk! - mywhitenoise, on 10/11/2007, -6/+7I checked for Tool, as well. It told me to look for better music.
- zachlutz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Same here...
Magnetic Fields ... No
CoCo Rosie ... Yes
Neutral Milk Hotel ... No
Kimya Dawson ... No
Ani DiFranco ... No
Amy Martin ... Yes
K's Choice ... No
Anyway, moderately better, but for an indie site, it's pretty poor. - 0siris, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@hat-
your part of the problem, *****. Not only do you pay under unfair terms, but you criticize others for not allowing themselves to be exploited by record label hacks. - woodenpidgeon, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3why would I use this over emusic? or even DRM free Itunes (if/when it happens)? I'd rather jump through torrent hoops than try to use this site. Yich! More Boing Boing evangelism. Everything isn't awesome just because it doesn't have DRM, (though it's a nice start).
- smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1it's awesome because it's a great place to find new music by unsigned bands. and with $0.59 of each track going to the artist, it's a much better way to support artists than other music services. RTFA.
- smackhero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1exactly. that's the whole point of their search/recommendation system. RTFA--don't expect to find most popular bands you are already familiar with on there. go there with an open mind to discover new music.
- bdbr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Audiolunchbox has a nice feature that I wish eMusic had - you can download an entire album for the cost of 10 songs. There is one album I'd like to buy, but its 20 extremely short songs (like just over 1 minute).
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I use CDBaby too for distributing my Music. It has been a great service thus far.
- bdbr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1No, eMusic is the largest indie music store.
What this should be is: "the store with the most music you've never heard of, even if you're really obscure stuff". - dajs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I like audiolunchbox.com good offer
and also has some better known artists -
