- llbbl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Live Writer sucks what are you doing use that garbage. Performancing is better and easier because it integrates with Firefox directly. I also like that Msft didn't make it.
- epoch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If wordpress.com doesn't feature ads, what is it's revenue stream?
- kenaroni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have used Movable Type and WordPress extensively, each for several years, and I can safely say that I MUCH prefer Movable Type. I will admit that WP is easier on initial setup and getting it running. But when it comes customizing the blog, and making it do what I want, where I want, MT makes much more sense to me. MT also is a no-brainer for me due to this one single feature: spawning extra blogs from a single installation. If you want a second or third, totally separate blog in WP, you'll have to do a totally new, extra installation for each, or else goof around with WP "categories" to make it do what you want (been there, no thanks). However, if you're a PHP jockey, which I am not, then WordPress is probably the blog software for you.
- error401, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2But MySQL is horrible, and it's bad practice to write code as strictly tied to it (or any RDBMS) as Wordpress is. The software architecture of Wordpress is truly awful, and I tend to find the same for applications that support only MySQL and shotgun DBMS-specific SQL throughout the code. An application only supporting a single database and being designed (or not...) not to be extensible in that area is poorly designed.
Besides, Postgres is far more featureful and if we could get out of this glut of MySQL only applications and service providers capable developers would be able to produce applications that perform better, scale better, and are more reliable. This ad-hoc standard in the web hosting world is really hurting things. You just can't be a successful developer unless your stuff runs on PHP and uses MySQL on the backend (unless you're only taking custom projects). It's good to see Postgres pushing its way through enough that hosts like yours can survive. What's unfortunate is the poor quality of the vast majority of popular web applications. PHP is a messy language to begin with, and backing it up with the ugliness of MySQL makes it incredibly easy to write crumby code.
But uh. I'm not opinionated or anything. Just suggesting that before you run out to learn PHP/MySQL you might think about reading about database design some, and actually investigating the alternatives to that combination. Almost all of them are nicer to work with and more featureful. - llbbl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Time to switch hosts or make friends with someone who will let you use their MySQL server. I know with my host I can make unlimited number of mysql databases, but the amount of data they hold goes against my disk limit of 200 GB.
- Sartori, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I know it's only partially related to this, but I really wish Wordpress supported multiple databases like SixApart's MovableType does. So many of these blogging apps and their plugins only support MySQL, it's a real shame. I tried Wordpress out locally and liked it, but my web hosting account only has a PGSQL account so no joy there.
On a more related note, most of the bloggers I know personally are on Typepad or Blogger, presumably Wordpress is bigger over in the US? - mtoigo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Wordpress is fantastic. I've had to setup both Movable Type and Wordpress sites and wordpress blows it away in almost every area, especially ease of customization.
- cpoteet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I think they're getting revenue from paid versions of the WP.com blogs. For instance, you can pay to customize the CSS, and now you can have your domain point to your WP.com blog for a fee.
- Sushubh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1u should check out mu release... :|
- PeterAssmann, on 12/23/2008, -0/+0oh this is huge: http://www.schneider-akademie.de
- dagr8tim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The only reason I use wordpress is that it came free with my web hosting account. There was like 0 setup to get it running.
- cmilki, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6The author uses Alexa Stats. Alexa only garners statistics from their own toolbar. In other words, if 1000 people visit a site (in reality) , but only 10 of them have Alexa Toolbar, Alexa registers it as 10 Hits.
But good nonetheless. - Sartori, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@kickarse - I don't do databases, and the people I know who do told me it was better :)
- kickarse, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Why would you go with an account that has only PGSQL?
- RealAct, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2WordPress by far is the best blogging software out there IMHO. and if you combine that with the ability to use Microsoft's Live Writer to remotely edit and publish entries to your blog then it is a must have.
