- billmccartney, on 02/27/2008, -0/+7One large part of any research is that there is a process of peer review. This research NEVER went through peer review (odds are it was submitted to a conference and DENIED) - So they simply put it online. It doesn't make any sense (unless all routers ran on exactly the same hardware with exactly the same software - neither of which is true) - so this has as much value as blogspam!!!
- bysin, on 02/27/2008, -1/+7This is the stupidest newscientist article I've ever read. They cannot be serious.
- leontes, on 02/27/2008, -6/+9If you leave your window open, then you are more likely to catch the flu. Eating an apple a day, contains antioxidants which helps increase immune system response, preventing viral contagion. So, yes, in this case, computer system use parallels real world phenomena.
- tophu, on 02/27/2008, -0/+3But that process doesn't take into account scientists who are just so damn awesome that they have no peers. What about that, huh?
- Kelmon, on 02/27/2008, -0/+2Genius. But it is an important point - diversification of computing systems that speak common languages to communicate but (for want of something better) use different native languages could provide some shielding to this issue.
- Mcmylo, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1oh noes
- sparrowkc, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1...Or over the internet...
- TheWindBlows, on 02/28/2008, -0/+1It's ok I use Linux!
- Whackly, on 02/27/2008, -1/+2Where do you live? I'm in!
- flytronix, on 02/27/2008, -1/+2"...show how a wireless computer worm might spread between stationary Wi-Fi routers..."
oh really? - schmeeky, on 02/27/2008, -0/+1I agree this is a bit far fetched, and sounds pretty much like most of the other crap research which gets into the media without peer review, but there are only a limited number of different manufacturers of router which are widely popular (e.g. Linksys, Netgear, Belkin), so the chances that another 'compatible' model being in range of an infected router increases as they become more common, even if only 1 in 50 is susceptible.
With mobile phones, this is even more likely to happen - out of the hundreds of people you might be in wifi or bluetooth range of each day, what are the chances that one or more of them will have the same model of phone as you? Again, there are only a few very popular manufacturers (Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola, Samsung) and they even use the same OS in some cases (symbian I believe is the basis for both Series 60 Nokia phones and Samsung's smart phone OS). Now that the iPod has wireless connectivity, I can imagine that being a pretty juicy target for a worm writer, especially as the iPod touch and iPhone become more common.
Personally, I always have bluetooth or wifi turned off on my portable devices when I'm not using them. Not though any paranoia though - just to save the battery life ;) - InferiorWang, on 02/27/2008, -1/+2Sounds like TCP/IP and the ability to run whatever OS you want.
- MasterThief117, on 02/27/2008, -1/+2This goes with my "terrorism does not create news, news creates terrorists" theory. Terrorism will decrease if the media stops feeding them so much. The media likes to provoke. It is as simple as that. They are the ones who cause the fear and panic.
- MasterThief117, on 02/27/2008, -2/+2But then again, I may be wrong.
- dmurray14, on 02/27/2008, -1/+1Cool.

- djclay, on 02/27/2008, -0/+0OK! Well, someone didn't like that - I had it up for about 15 seconds and I was already at +0 diggs! WOO! Someone must've thought it's a real virus ^.^
- EnzoRizzo, on 02/27/2008, -0/+0What's a computer worm? Is it a new game? I couldn't find it in the apt-get repo ;-)
cheers,
a happy Ubuntu user - StolenLamp, on 02/27/2008, -3/+2Go ahead and try to steal my Wi-Fi... I dare you.
