- sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34Id take better running over better looking any day...
- cameron074, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34"The top developers working on Vista had to sign a pledge that whatever feature they were working on will not "look like ass.'"
hilarious. hope they actually fulfill that pledge - Humptydank, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26Or an alternate headline:
Just Before ***** Hits Fan, Fan Announces Retirement - flipmeat, on 10/12/2007, -18/+37Washington state Apple store workers are on standby to help Mr. Allchin with his new Mac.
- etandrib, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Oh good. Now he can get that Mac he's been wanting for a couple years.
- Akaji, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18And here I was hoping that it was Steve Ballmer leaving. /cry
- somnus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12@CBTF:
That's a reference to the letter Allchin wrote to Gates and Ballmer where he talks about Microsoft losing touch with the consumer, and how "if [he] didn't work for Microsoft [he'd] buy a Mac". - colincornaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13"You know MS uses macs too right? They have an entire lab full of them. Stop being a fanboy."
You mean the lab full of Macs they have in their Macintosh Development Offices? The offices where they code the Mac version of Office? We're talking about the Windows development team here. - tuxthepenguin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Don't the rats jump ship before it sinks?
- Hax0rJimDuggan, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19HASTA LA VISTA!!!
- jman8888, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12No steve really said that.. And He really said that. look it up.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10This does not bode well for the future of MSFT.
"I think our teams lost sight of what resilience means, what full scenarios mean, what security means, what performance means...I see lots of random features and some great vision, but that doesn't translate into great products," Allchin wrote.
All too often in Redmond the problem is dictating the solution. Good luck on your new job at Apple, Jim. - greatblackowl, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I imagine the logic to be more like:
Man... This monumental task is done. I think I'll retire now. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9He's probably leaving to avoid being splattered in the *****-storm that's on the horizon.
- ThinkFr33ly, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12He has been planning to leave for a very long time. His leaving has nothing to do with the quality of Vista.
- StoneWolf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9"No. Who the hell "basks in the glory" of software?"

- CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11No. Who the hell "basks in the glory" of software?
- seandfeeney, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Hmmmm..... looks like somebody is preparing for disaster.
- noamchomskeet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Steve Ballmer has no eyebrows, that's just plain weird.
- uberdesigner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6he's probably so ***** rich that he's decided to leave early.
- ranthony, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Goodbye Allchin. The rest of the article is a puff piece designed to spin the delay in getting Vista out in the correct direction. Longhorn failed because nobody wanted the invasive security measures that were touted as one of Longhorn's strengths (the chipset it was to utilize was shelved, if I remember correctly, over the same issues) It's taken nearly five years to design and build a version of Windows that Microsoft thought people would go for, that also included enough of the DRM and anti-piracy measures (that corporate America is inexplicably in love with) to satisfy Microsoft's business partners and it's legal department.
Good luck with it. It'll never see the inside of any of my systems, at least not in it's unadulterated form.

-RAnthony - etempest, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5He announced he would retire when Vista launch at least 1/2 a year ago or more.
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Amusing but don't compare him with that man, Allchin actually had a clue and if it wasn't for him Microsoft (Windows) would be a lot worse off.
- clyde2801, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10I kind of agree with the 'rats leaving a sinking ship' reference. He's out of the door right after it ships. If Vista was truly a great, stable, awe-inspiring package, wouldn't he stay on just a bit to bask in the glory?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If you gave me about 4-5 Billion dollars, a time frame of about 5 or 6 years, the ability to pick and choose the best and the brightest for a team and the freedom to ignore certain legal and financial and social responsibilities, I would not only create the most intuitive, stable and productive OS that humanity has ever seen, but I would probably find the time and resources to build 100,000 starter homes and a thriving community for those that would want to join the fun of advancing the Art of the Science of Personal Computing.
Yes, that's an indirect way of saying Ballmer and Gates have squandered 4-5 Billion dollars, about 5 or 6 years, and the talents of the best and brightest..for what, the revolutionary and forward thinking Windows Vista? I expect more. You should too. - jeffyjones, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Nonsense. Microsoft is screwed up in a lot of ways, but it depends entirely on the part of the company. The Xbox and .NET/Visual Studio teams are far more agile and in touch with customers, and the products they release show that. Allchin leaving doesn't change that, and if anything might help them realize they can't even build a product like this again.
- GoodOlClint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it's also a reference to the iPhone keynote where Steve said he had put all the Apple stores on alert for when Jim retired
- threepio, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Maybe he'll take a vacation with Kutaragi
- GreatDrok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Noone would buy it because it isn't Windows. I am getting so sick of people who are scared to death of the idea of trying something else such that even if the greatest and most user friendly OS did come along it would still be an abject failure. It comes down to the way people are taught. The teachers know every little about what they are teaching so they just teach using the 'what to click' approach which means when the thing is moved they have to be retrained. Contrast this with teaching 'what it does' and the resultant ability to recognise the right controls even when moved or even on a completely different OS. Of course, there are pretty big changes between editions of Windows but in theory it could be a completely different OS and as long as it is called Windows people would happily adapt.
- maverick808, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"That's the way we design our system to be--hard to use," Allchin said. Classic.
- Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Dude, is it just me, or does Jim Allchin look like a bird?
Seriously, I feel like he's going to peck me. Ack. - acomj, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5>jeffyjones
.Net deosn't make MS much money at all. (Actually Xbox has lost MS 4-5 Billion dollars, think about that ). About 90% of the revenue MS gets is from 2 divisions, Office and Windows. Everything else is a financial failure. Thats why when the head of the windows division departs its big news.
MS Windows super high profitability is critical to financing XBOX and Zune. - saska, on 10/12/2007, -2/+490% of the comments in this article reveal their authors as completely clueless about real tech industry news.
- parthanant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1MediaVidea blog lists out all the 13 main problems with Vista:
http://mediavidea.blogspot.com/2007/01/case-against-vista.html - wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"He has been planning to leave for a very long time. His leaving has nothing to do with the quality of Vista."
Microsoft has been planning Vista for a "very long time." - Pwelborn1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Dude, you're an idiot. Is Mac OSX's installer themed in pre-OSX environments?"
And how many different manufacturers products does that installer have to support? and how many for windows? - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2
if it wasn't for him Microsoft (Windows) would be a lot worse off.
I believe the obvious question that comes to mind is: Is that possible? - listrophy, on 10/12/2007, -10/+11Well, judging from the Win95-era dropdown combo boxes, it looks as though someone didn't fulfill the pledge: http://www.engadget.com/photos/windows-vista-in-pictures/146698/
They modified the buttons, but not the combo boxes? Seriously, MSFT... get in the game. - radiofrequency, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The rats are jumping off the sinking Microsoft titanic.
Allchin: don't let the door hit your ass on the way out. You're responsible for a lot of the antitrust violations Microsoft has committed over the years. - cuoops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mine was first...oh well

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If one reads between the double-speak in his remarks, it's quite obvious that he fears Vista will be poorly adopted and Microsoft's future will suffer as a consequence.
Microsoft has totally lost the plot when it comes to designing stable, fault-tolerant and solidly performing Operating Systems. They think "good enough" is acceptable to the masses who have to suffer yet again with more broken software that requires endless maintenance.
Microsoft, get out of the OS business and stick to developing core applications. Apple has you beat in this arena. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2HAHAHAHA! god I love getting buried by Mac fanboy *****. BURY AWAY *****
