- SteveR4376, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11When I was a teenager in the 70's we did the same things, even without computer and the Internet. Imagine that.
- Snarfalunch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"50 times more dumber"
That should be "dumberer by a factor of fifty." Smarten up. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Great, yet another fluff piece by Dateline to scare the last few IQ points out of americas soccer moms.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13MySpace is a cesspit for computer illiterate buffoons.
- harmlessinc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Parents must be active and aware of what their kids are doing? Wow... I'm just... shocked... shocked I say.
- sagedude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8They sound like NORMAL teenagers to me...
- Mr.Germain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Teenagers are DRINKING and having SEX??????
Why hasn't anyone done something about this? - Ignathius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8this isin't an issue with myspace, nor the web, nor the children. this is an issue with DUMBASS parents.
if you can't be bothered to take the time to find out what your kids are doing, then you have no business being parents in the first place. - josh7066, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9as soon as my Gf gets off my lap and i put my beer down i will post a longer reply
- Tennen, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Myspace is for noobs :)
- anagoge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"it found scenes of binge drinking, apparent drug use, teens posing in underwear, and other members simulating sex, and in some cases even having it."
I want links! - longdyingdays, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I am still amazed that people can repeatedly be persuaded by this media sensationalism. I think its difficult for anyone (of a reasonable IQ) to claim that they are "unaware" of the over-emphasized dangers of putting personal information online. Again, it's more of that "culture of fear" that American media, government and other powers are so excellent at creating and embellishing. I would love to see if myspace (despite the fact that it was apparently cited in 3 abduction/sexual harassment cases in the last month) or the internet in general has made a RISE in sexual crimes. Ultimately, I can't imagine that the development of the internet and sexual and predatory crimes are directly related--but NBC doesn't care.
"[It’s] one stop shopping for sexual predators, and they can shop by catalogue." Well, if myspace is a catalogue for predators, what's a school parking lot? a mall? We should shut them ALL down, right NBC? - vermin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6lmao, OMG teens drinking and having sex!! WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT!?!?!?
Wow, American media is so full of ***** it's unbelievable. - StanrickKubley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Teens will go to the wrong places and talk to the wrong sorts of people, and what determines their behavior in those situations comes from parenting. If your teen meets up with an old man she met on myspace, the problem runs a little deeper than her preference in social websites.
- pyewackett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Hmmm. The demographic of digg users is starting to become clear. As soon as there is even some implied threat to "frredoms" teenagers enjoy they arc up and thoroughly miss the point. Most parents accept the fact that teenagers get up to all sorts of stupid-arsed behaviours because in most cases they did so themselves (yes, even *your* parents, sparky!). A lot of parents don't know anything about sites like MySpace, so it's a good idea to draw attention to them. Furthermore, if sites like that have a reputation as a sexual predator's shopping mall, then some parents might actually start talking to their kids about their personal security, the site operators might feel more pressure to monitor the kinds of behaviours their members exhibit, and heaven forbid that maybe even one teenager stopped for a second and had a good think about what the ***** they were doing. Story dugg.
- Guano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You guys should RTFA. It's more about predators using the site to find kids and stuff. More of a case of stupid teens that surprised parents.
- iMatt711, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is like that My Son is A Hacker article from a couple years ago, http://www.adequacy.org/stories/2001.12.2.42056.2147.html
- JulianMorrison, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Blah blah blah. Teenagers are lewd, rowdy. End of world predicted. Film at 11.
- cliffordsound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Let me tell you the most dangerous consequnece of this whole story and people's unfounded concerns in social networking sites: eventually it will come to the point that the entire net will be government-controlled and monitored for content that they deem "dangerous" or "not in the best interest of the individual."
It is the responisiblity of the parents to monitor their children, not Myspace. Only the parents know ultimately what kind of children they are raising. I find it absolutely hilarious that the only people who find this disturbing are individuals that have no idea what kind of content is on the net. Diggers, such as us, understand that there are MANY other things to be worried about, other that MySpace.
If they all want Big Brother in their houses, by all means, continue your manic concern into sites such as MySpace. - dragulaaeop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Where are the links to those pages that have "binge drinking, apparent drug use, teens posing in underwear, and other members simulating sex, and in some cases even having it" so I can... investigate... this problem.
Hmm... very curious indeed my dear Watson - Meshyf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Kids are stupid.
Parents suck.
News lies and exaggerates.
Nothing new here. dugg for stupid girl giving address away. - ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4my space. = n00bware.
- ThisGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The public seems to be oblivious to the fact that what people do does not change, but the way they do it does along with advances in technology.
It's like they "wave of ipod thefts". Last year they were stealing mobile phones. Same thing, different headline. - lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3WTF, the parent in the article runs the computers at a school, yet doesn't know what MySpace is? Man, hasn't she heard the "lol emo" jokes?
Anyway, parents are going to be even more pissed when they find out about IRC. - traviswalters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Really? They do? Drink and have sex? I would have never guessed awesome reporting Dateline, way to keep really relevant. Who watches Dateline?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What about LiveJournal? Blogger? Xanga? Internet Forums? BBS? IRC? AIM? MSN Instant Messenger? Yahoo? or Wordpress for that matter?
This is just another example of Sensationalism that appeals to all the ignorant ***** that sit in their lazyboys and play monday morning quarterback while in reality no doing anything. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Filed under: "WON'T SOMEONE PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!!!!"
For Dateline's next trick, they'll show how you can access porn within 5 seconds with Google! SHOCK AND AWE!! - modularsky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2These people can't see the forest for the trees. It's not as if MySpace is facilitating drinking, sex, and drug use. It's only making it more apparent to the prying eyes of America's paranoid parent-populace.
- zenghost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yea...before myspace kids never drank and ***** and posed in underwear and smoke cigs and weed and used other drugs and pop pills and drop out of school and have kids while still being kids....sure...
not every kid in myspace is into all those vices and whatnot...and people do this without myspace... - Bananas21ca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Kids are just asking to be molested. Posting your exact address?!?!? Like WTF? Im glad that chick got grounded cause she's stupid!
- NickN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm suprised they were even able to navigate the site, you can't even even log in without getting an error.
- ronaldhennessy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Myspace is cultural diarrhea.
- teece, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You mean to say Dateline saw teenagers doing what they actually do on MySpace?!
OMFG!!! The end is nigh!
*rolls eyes*
Dateline is not journalism. Don't treat it as anything like that. It's entertainment, pure and simple. I saw their piece -- it was really stupid (as most stuff on Dateline is). It was 99.5% sensationalist crap. 0.5% was valid, and could have been stated in a sentence: "Parents, don't let your teenagers do whatever the hell they want online, and most importantly, tell them not to ID themselves so easily online."
In a nutshell: parents, start acting like parents when it comes to your computer.
Watch a Dateline episode that you happen to have actual, unbiased, non-sentaitiolaistic knowledge of. Man, your eyes will be opened ( I once saw a very good PBS documentary on a crime, and then promptly saw a Dateline "documentary" on the same thing. It is absolutely astounding how bad Dateline is. They *completely* twist facts to make the story have tension and excitement. They have no respect for actual reality). - SnowSurfns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2so you mean I shouldnt have posted my address, the times my parents arent home, the alarm code for my house, where the spare key is, and the exact route I walk home from school (using the google maps api). Damn it I hate when that happens!!!
(imo I think myspace is the bane of the devil and should be killed) - Rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ohgr, because DeviantArt uses real html and stuff. The pages don't look like *****...
'nuff said. - D4r7h3v1l, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like myspace. It gives me nostalgia becasue it looks like 1997.
- osuadh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2why aren't there links to these pictures of teen in their underwear having sex? no digg!
- Ruckgesicht, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, we've got trouble my friends! Trouble ith a capital 'T', that rhymes with 'P' and that stands for 'POOL'!
- zaofreek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I'll admit it, I use myspace. And I'm 22 years old. Sure, it's basically a waste of time and bandwidth, and the average myspace user is less than intelligent, but I've met my fair share of interesting people on it. What bothers me is when I get a friend request, open it, and see that a 15 year old wants to add me. I just want to call their parents and ask them if they realize that their 15 year old daughter wanted to add me, and who knows who else she was trying to add. It seems to me that myspace would be a sort of playground for Internet predators.
Are parents really naive enough to think that what their kids are doing online is inherently safe? - Craig1394, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yet another report of people sticking their abnormally large noses where they do not belong. Also, any people who complain about MySpace being "stupid" or "lame" or "SuXor" are most likely people who thought it was cool before it became popular. There are relatively minor things I do not like about MySpace, such as the dipsticks who have their age set to 100 years old, or have no REAL pictures of themselves.
- JoeG254, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In general, myspace users are technologically impaired. You can tell just by most of the designs of their profiles. Being 15 most of my peers used myspace, but I can't see what's so great about it anyway. Of course it's normal for me not to be into these popular teen trends.
- GameCop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You guys can see the video on MSNBC -> http://video.msn.com/v/us/msnbc.htm?g=e5cd06e3-ca49-474d-839e-ad4a81fe322f&f=00
- ediblehat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Methinks this article might have less to do with any actual nasty goings on and more to do with the fact that News Corporation owns Myspace.
(But Myspace is a craphole anyway) - greg544, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Reading these comments, you can tell the average age of a digg reader must be about 14 years old.
- Cronos1388, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That girl needs to learn how to use a proxy. The mother is an overprotective bitch. If my parents got monthly reports of my computer usage I would be really pissed.
- cragga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Teens will go to the wrong places and talk to the wrong sorts of people, and what determines their behavior in those situations comes from parenting. quoted for truth. - RadiatedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1myporn
- Matteu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Parents must mind MySpace if their too lazy to talk to their kids about online safety.
There are ways to protect yourself on MySpace.
You can make your profile visible ONLY to your friends, and you have to approve the people that add you to their friends list.
Your e-mail address never shows up on the page unless you put it there, not that an e-mail address matters.
And for all those people who talk about "Myspace is for noobs and computer dumb people," that's so not true and you're too blind to notice.
Myspace is one of the big things at my school, everyone has one. It's how we communicate when school hours are over. It's a good thing, IF you use it correctly. Which sadly, PARENTS don't seem to teach their kids how.
