- ColorblindBoy, on 09/05/2008, -1/+146I still say I'll blame my provider...
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -0/+122It's not just something you just dump stuff on. It's not a truck.
- theycensoredme, on 09/05/2008, -3/+106I'm not as concerned with bandwidth as I am with pricing. $50.00/month with Time Warner Cable is a bit steep, especially at this day and age. Its just like with cell phones... the technology gets better, more efficient, and cheaper for the provider, but the prices stay the same.
- highwebl, on 09/05/2008, -0/+99It is easier to blame your users than upgrade your network.
- MuffloN, on 09/05/2008, -4/+77Slow? Paying 40$ a month for 100/100 Fiber+phone+TV, not limited at any caps, not throttled in anyway, oh wait, it's about America, sorry, I'll just go live with my poor socialist government influenced broadband/phone market here in Sweden.
*snickers* - Lane, on 09/05/2008, -1/+70online gaming uses 10 MAYBE 20kbps. How the ***** is that hogging? And hogging what? What I pay for? Why dont they stop offering the high end bandwidth packages if the ***** cant support it.
- clsslc, on 09/05/2008, -4/+70Why? Because the telco companies promised fiber to the home and never delivered.
- Jaime2000, on 09/05/2008, -1/+65It's-it's-it's a series of tubes!
- iamyak, on 09/05/2008, -2/+63Hey guys. Sorry I'm late, my internets really slow right now.
- flarn2006, on 09/05/2008, -2/+62Kshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh......wahhhhhhhhhhhhhh...Boo-BLEEP-boo, BAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH...kshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
- whiteguysamurai, on 09/05/2008, -5/+58It's slow because of packet sniffing.
- whiteknives, on 09/05/2008, -1/+49It's the ISP's fault for guaranteeing speeds when they know they wouldn't be able to serve their customers properly even if 5% of them used what they bought. Instead, they choose to throw ***** at the 5% of their users who actually get what they paid for.
- merreborn, on 09/05/2008, -0/+42"You see, we sell this "unlimited" service, but these bastards, these "bandwidth hogs", they think they have a right to actually use the 6 mbps service they pay for "without limits". That's not what "unlimited" means. "Unlimited" means you check your email twice a day, and look at a couple of pictures on flicker, which costs us a few pennies in bandwidth. Then we pocket your $60/month and laugh all the way to the bank."
- homesickalien, on 09/05/2008, -0/+39How about ISP's invest more money in infrastructure to deliver what they promise instead of whining and pointing fingers?
- wefarrell, on 09/05/2008, -3/+37http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartel
- HarChim, on 09/05/2008, -1/+31Those of us with Comcast hate you. Mr. FiOS with his fancy shmancy fast series of trucks.
- dsmx, on 09/05/2008, -0/+28All these problems could of been fixed if the ISP's actually invested in upgrading there networks like they were supposed to.
- xL0Sx, on 09/05/2008, -0/+27Admit it, you only married her for her family's bandwidth.
- inactive, on 09/05/2008, -2/+29Buried for "*snickers*", I will not stand for viral advertisement.
- zadadka, on 09/05/2008, -0/+26Best impression I've seen of a 56k modem in a long while.
Dugg. - KnightMareInc, on 09/05/2008, -3/+26if less than 1% of an ISP's users bandwidth usage can take down an its network, the ISP need a new network.
- Sabin, on 09/05/2008, -0/+23You're getting ripped the ***** off!! My wifes family pays 5000¥for 100mbps. You should look into Japan.
- RossDuprey, on 09/05/2008, -0/+22All "granny" has to do is upgrade from 56k modem to cable internet. Also this fear mongering has been debunked many times over. Telcos just don't want to fork over the cash to upgrade the existing network.
- roijen, on 09/05/2008, -0/+19It's alright we haven't really done anything yet.
- dfsjdkflasjk, on 09/05/2008, -0/+18ass
- rivalius13, on 09/05/2008, -0/+18Mine's slow because it's being throttled. Damn download caps :(
- webcrumb, on 09/06/2008, -9/+26So let me try to get this straight. You're saying that paying less tax but paying for health care, education, infrastructure, utilities is better than paying more tax and getting those things at a better quality for free?
Methinks you're suffering from something called 'false economy'. - hoofhockey, on 09/05/2008, -0/+17buried... ISP's still over sell their lines and claim to provide 'dedicated' bandwidth, when if everybody they serve was to use that, they would be *****
- Sabin, on 09/05/2008, -2/+18I wish my poor socialist government here in Canada would do something about the internet service here but pissing off either Bell or Rogers is probably something they want to avoid. God bless monopolies.
- Ratteler, on 09/05/2008, -2/+18Translation: You're ISP is blaming your neighbor (and blaming you to your neighbor.), because they want to charge more for what they already provide, and want US to absorb the cost of keeping THEM competitive.
Business 3.0. Why supply a service for your fee when you can pay less to bribe the elected officials to let you bilk their voters. - caracter2, on 09/05/2008, -11/+27It's Sarah Palin blocking al the tubes!!! Duh!!
- ijwhelan, on 09/05/2008, -0/+16You're getting ripped the ***** off!! I pay $45 for 20mbps . You should look into Cox Communications
- goldenratiophi, on 09/05/2008, -1/+16Ten movies streaming across that, that Internet, and what happens to your own personal Internet? I just the other day got an Internet was sent by my staff at 10 o'clock in the morning on Friday, I got it yesterday. Why? Why? Because it got tangled up in a big ball with all these things going on the Internet commercially.
- Aadain, on 09/05/2008, -0/+14Um, party at your place? Bring your own tissues though.
- seanc6610, on 09/05/2008, -2/+16i love my isp actually.. verizon fios. i can hog all the bandwidth i want, and it doesn't really affect too many other people.
- MrPillowPants, on 09/05/2008, -1/+14That and stop advertising I will be able to download music, movies, and play games faster.
- fuzzmeister, on 09/05/2008, -0/+13Of course it is, but compared to many other places in the developed world, it's pitifully slow.
- KingGorilla, on 09/05/2008, -0/+13I think its the infrastructure that needs updating. Other countries are way faster. At least the big cities in this country should have similar speeds
- wizzroom, on 09/05/2008, -2/+15I've downloaded 30gb of pr0n so far this week. Whatcha gonna do about it?
- CrazedLeper, on 09/05/2008, -1/+13Me too. I know they're holding back--until I go to a speed testing site. Then it's plenty fast. 6mbps, my @$$...
- IanPR, on 09/05/2008, -2/+14Meh... you guys pay more for everything else.
- identitymatrix, on 09/06/2008, -0/+11The modem in that video clip dialed a number that was several digits longer than 10, so it wasn't a valid number. I figured it was probably just a random string of digits generated for the tv show, but I wanted to be sure.
So I downloaded the youtube video file, which is a flv file, converted it to avi format, extracted the audio stream to a wav file, and opened it in audacity.
From there I could see that there were in fact 16 digits. So I looked at the frequency analysis of each DTMF tone, took the 2 spikes of each and looked up what pair of DTFM frequencies were the closest match for each digit to decode the number. It turns how the modem dialed 8453088853088890. Clearly six of the inner digits are repeated:
84-530888-530888-90. So after taking out 1 instance of the 6 repeated digits yields a valid phone number (845)-308-8890. So I did a reverse 411 lookup and it looks like the phone number is a land line in Spring Valley, NY.
At that point I realized I have no life. - lordrahl, on 09/05/2008, -0/+11how... how do you stand it?
- plup, on 09/05/2008, -1/+12***** THING SUCKS, THAT'S WHY!
- anononon, on 09/05/2008, -0/+11What's sniffing panties got to do wi..... oh nevermind, I read it again.
- Paulish, on 09/05/2008, -1/+11Where I live, it is Comcast, or nothing. Lets stop granting monopolies with licensing. I bet that alone would help a great deal.
- Recidivus, on 09/05/2008, -0/+10you pay $30 for up to 20mbs.
- inchrnt, on 09/05/2008, -0/+9it's like health insurance. pay more and more and more to get less and less and less.
- wattersm, on 09/05/2008, -0/+9Sniffers run at wire speed, you'd never notice.
- h0tpot, on 09/05/2008, -4/+13I hear Californee has good internet.
