- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -14/+109Dumb people are on Myspace. There's a difference.
- ccheath, on 10/12/2007, -2/+73how about this.... don't put anything online anywhere that you wouldn't want your parents/employer/girlfriend/etc finding -- it's that simple... once it's online it is out there and you don't have control over that information.
don't be dumb...
or, be dumb -- it's your perogative - rewritable, on 10/12/2007, -20/+69Myspace isnt just for dumb people, I use it to keep intouch with my friends that are in the Army and a few others that have moved away. And if you're worried about what people will see on myspace, just make your page private. Then no one will see your page unless you add them to your friends list.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -44/+80Myspace is for dumb people.
- toplawstudent, on 10/12/2007, -14/+48Great points. This is why I don't have a MySpace page.
- bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -5/+35I see your points on hiding under a blanket of obscurity for fear of being judged by future employers, and I raise you one xkcd:
http://www.xkcd.com/c137.html - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+33Yes it does.. Do you think this stuff just disappears?
- Charlotte_Web, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Not only did he delete his MySpace page, but he also deleted his page about why you should delete your MySpace page.
That's hardcore. - Dayz, on 10/12/2007, -13/+38For all the people who say they use myspace to keep in touch, what happened to email and aim?
- TheFoundry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26Actually your myspace page isn't archived on waybackmachine because it's blocked by robots.txt, so that part is innacurate.

Someone from a bad neighborhood and broken home goes into the army, gets money for college, and makes something of himself. Is that dumb? These people are ready to fight to protect YOU if we find ourselves in a conflict, so YOU don't have to go to war. Show some respect. - subscribtion, on 10/12/2007, -12/+31You're not old enough to be on the Internet. GTFO.
- noamsml, on 10/12/2007, -7/+23http://www.xkcd.com/comics/dreams.png
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19the trick is to pretend myspace is a person you don't like very much, so when you write anything on your profile you come across as distant and cold.
(read : professional ) - Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19Why stop at MySpace?
http://digg.com/tech_news/Fight_that_blogging_urge - gooddoggytreat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Or you could just not have anything that article lists. No? Is that too bad? Hmm, oh well! My myspace page has nothing really wrong with it, so I'll keep it.
- dontbejack, on 10/12/2007, -8/+20Are you ***** dumb? You shouldn't even have a myspace. If you're too young to get a job, you're just the right age for some pervert.
- MonkeyFit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12They updated that point and put that correction in there, but also said that other services like google cache MAY archive it and so you can never be absolutely 100% sure.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11What? You mean future employers don't like seeing pictures of you dressed up as a mime doing keg stands?
This world is sick, you people are sick. I'm going to chat with Tom now. - amire80, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11But if i don't put anything embarrassing there, what's the problem?
The only problem i could think of, is having embarrassing MySpace friends. - toppgun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12@bob
if you had a tough breakup with a gf then wouldnt it be hard not to think of it the next day.... wait, this is digg.... if your computer crashed and you didnt have an install disk, wouldnt it be tough on you the next day? - TheOther1, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17Too young for a job?! Back when I was your age, we had to walk uphill through snow 10 miles to get to school. They would only teach us one letter of the alphabet because it took so long to hike there through the snow. Then after school, my brother and I would walk another 10 miles through the snow to work in a sweat shop for 14 hours and we only got paid 4 cents per week. And we were grateful!
Oh, wait, that was my Dad's rant, sorry. - mhl12, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10http://duggmirror.com/tech_news/Why_You_Should_Delete_Your_MySpace_Page/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I don't understand why this is news. Of course, if you post something identifiable on the Internet, whether it be a personal homepage, a page on My Space, or even a posting to a bulletin board, potential employers, friends, family members, or stalkers have a good chance of finding it if they can use a search engine.
The points of this article are so self-evident that, if you didn't already know them, you probably shouldn't be using the Web in the first place. - oOLiquidNightOo, on 10/12/2007, -10/+18i like how this kid asks a group of "peers" a sincere question and you attack him/her. it's ***** like you that make the net a "bad" place in the first place.
- bitcloud, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10It's not like the myspace search actually *works*.
- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Was she hot?
- afpunk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9@dayz
"For all the people who say they use myspace to keep in touch, what happened to email and aim?"
For all the people who say they use email and aim to keep in touch, what ever happened to snail mail and the telegram?
I'm not saying myspace is a big technological advancement or anything. However, if people find it easier to use and more convenient for them, who the hell are you to say they are wrong? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"Stop judging people based upon their leisure activities."
While I agree that people shouldn't be judged like that, you have to look through the eyes of the employers.
Thing is, companies are liable for your actions. Either through insurance, lost profits, personal injury, etc, etc, etc. If I hire you but then 6 months later I find pics of you smoking meth out of a beer can I'd probably fire you not because I "don't agree with your leisure activities", but because you're too much of a risk.
You can be the nicest and smartest person in the world, but if you're dumb enough to post pics of yourself doing blatantly illegal or extremely dangerous activities online for THE WHOLE WORLD to see, don't complain that "people will not agree with them". - HunkOfLove, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8lol, i did this and guess what showed up:
Sorry! an unexpected error has occurred.
This error has been forwarded to MySpace's technical group. - bob_the_alien, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Really, my personal life and my career are two different things, while as of now I've quit all the drugs and partying, but when I was first out of college, I had no problem telling potential bosses what I liked to do, but I also told them it would not interfere with my work. and it didn't. I never fount an employer that had a problem with what I did after work hours either. Truthfully, if I had fount one that had a major problem with my personal life, then I wouldn't have taken that job anyway, so it didn't matter.
- gurgg, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14Actually inaccurate to a point because waybackmachine doesnt do myspace pages as per their request
- paulmdx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9"Why You Should DELETE Your MySpace Page" (Emphasis mine.)
The article details why you shouldn't have information that represents you badly on MySpace, fair enough. The call to "delete your .. page" seems like a fairly unsubtle and biased message of "don't use MySpace". There's no need to delete your MySpace page if you use it responsibly. - TheWriteGuy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Either don't use MySpace or if you do and are concerned about your job, keep things on your MySpace page professional. Duh.
- lebaige, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10"Besides, for all you know, the Bush administration has wide open access to myspace because of the war on terrorism (and civil rights)."
That's ***** amazing. Someone managed to work a Bush criticism into a post about myspace.
As for this theory about myspace being all emo people and college students, all I can say is just about every person I know under the age of thirty has one. Married couples, military people, working professionals, you name it. Except, of course, for the techno-snobs, who along with techno-phobes seems to be the only group in their target demographic that DOESN'T use myspace. It's the largest social networking site on the internet, with something like 25 million unique users. That's a bit more than a niche market for teenagers with angst. - Zipbob, on 10/12/2007, -14/+20@fmaxwell
>And you and your friends are too dumb to use e-mail,
>telephones, VOIP, fax machines,or the mail?
>How do you think that those of us not on myspace.com
>keep in touch?
...Which is the same as saying that you and your friends are just too dumb to use MySpace. Hell, why we're here, I think all those people using Internet Explorer are stupid. And Windows. (I don't, by the way..) You shouldn't just slate something because it isn't your preferred method.
>Because we all know that major, multinational corporations
>can be trusted to protect your privacy and never leak your data to anyone.
But I'll agree with you there.
I'm not saying MySpace is great, I personally dislike it.. I just don't think you should be so shallow-minded about it. People like the person you were quoting seem to be an example of where it is a useful site.
Unfortunately it comes with 12 year old emo CSS hack-whores as well. They ARE the dumb ones. - Travelsonic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Stereotyping proves you have no real argument.
- lava, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14because it's as ugly as your mom?
- EXreaction, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Wow, that is a horrible article...
First of all it generalizes everyone with a myspace account saying that they have suggestive or drunk photos or anything bad on there...
While this may be true for the majority of myspace users(I don't use it myself, so I don't know) it doesn't apply to everyone.
The main point should be don't ever post crap on any site if you care who reads it! The internet is NOT a private domain, EVERYONE can read it.
I wouldn't care if a future employer got knew who I am on the net, just google my username and you can find all of my forum posts and other info about me. But I really don't care if anyone sees it, hell, I am proud of most of the things I do! - BasouKazuma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Same, there's nothing incriminating on any bit of info i have posted on the web. Mainly cuz i dont have much to hide.
- BFIrrera, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Actually, I think that these kids putting all the dumb things they've done on their myspace page is a fairly good idea. It will ensure that people much more deserving of high paying, high pressure jobs will get them while they work at McD's....
...it's called "culling the herd" - d03boy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I use MySpace to keep in touch with dumb people. So it is not only for dumb people.
- ejp1082, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Exactly. I use multiple aliases for different contexts and don't post personally identifiable information. (In other words, I never type my real name). When I apply for a job, I use a dedicated email address for that task.
So if you search on my real name it turns up nadda, except for a few times I got mentioned in a local paper during high school. If you search on the email address I put on my resume or the handle on that address, it turns up nothing.
Not that I think there's really anything I want to hide out there; but all the same I don't believe that employers have any right to be doing these kinds of searches.
Once upon a time, a person's personal life was his personal life and when applying to a job he was judged on his qualifications alone (various -isms notwithstanding). A world where we have to consider "what will my employer think?" before doing or saying anything is an Orwellian nightmare I'd rather not be a part of. - Charlotte_Web, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Oh, and I just tried to access my MySpace page through the Wayback Machine, and got the following error message:
"Robots.txt Query Exclusion.
We're sorry, access to http://www.myspace.com/charlottedan has been blocked by the site owner via robots.txt." - fakerjohn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4A couple more points:
1. MySpace was crappy when it started. Slow as balls, worse styles than Craigslist, worse ads than Hotmail and used primarily by the kids you hate.
2. And now it benefits Rupert Murdoch.
However:
1. Probably don't want to work for a company that crawls MySpace for my self-incriminations.
2. And, if Rupert Murdoch wants to help morons incriminate themselves, I'm all for it. Look at where it's gotten the Bush Administration. ;) - victimofkratina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3notice he said "saw" and not "knew".
- FrankieB078, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Please forgive me but I'd like to defend my reasoning for using MySpace.
First of all I don't find anything on my profile embarassing or anything of that sort. My employer has seen my Myspace on various occasions. If I didn't have this luxury I'd simply set my profile to private. Nobody but your friends can see it, bottom line. Whether or not you create a profile with factual information is up to you. - bdmbdm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I have a Myspace account, but I use it strictly to find/add new bands I like so it's easier to keep track of them. I pretty much disabled everything it shows by default.
- diversionmary, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In addition to the myspace, should I get rid of my two art sites, my flickr and my livejournal?
Maybe I should just not live, in case I need to get a job at some point. -
