- joeuttaro, on 06/06/2008, -1/+10And yet another generic article on how Google is going to bury Microsoft.
***** please. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4What a silly article.
Nobody's abandoning MS softwares for Writely or Spreadsheet or whatever other half-arsed, limited-because-it's-web-based "alternative". I use the word "alternative" loosely - in the sense that your feet are an "alternative" to a Porsche.
Where did open source "badly" hurt MS? It wasn't sales, marketshare, quality or branding.
Then the piece of crap claims ad-supported + open source could finish MS. What a joke lol. MySpace and YouTube are no threat to MS.
The only thing that's even close to true is the article states Yahoo! and Google give users software that "could have come" from Microsoft. Sure it could have - if various countries and unions weren't lining up looking for an excuse to fine MS ridiculous amounts of money for providing "extra" software.
Claiming the entire computing world is moving to integrated software and hardware ala iPods, because Apple did it with iPods, is just absurd. Is the entire computing world moving to Lisa 2's because someone managed to host a site on one? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Yawn....this is old news - but DiggIOTS just digg everything that's anti-Microsoft.
- williamdyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ray Ozzie is a ***** cut from the same cloth as Cutler, Gates, and Ballmer.
Ray Ozzie thought Groove was going to be the future of the Internet. Right. - PuffyC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Lame...
- whitecricket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32 billion isn't really that much in terms of Microsoft.
- guice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Advertising deals only work of people actually use the site. That has yet to be seen. Not discrediting Facebook, they are just aren't as prevalent as their competitors at the moment. Being "Students only" until recently didn't help them either.
- pongx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Microsoft has an advertising system. It's called AdCenter. It's a solid ad system that is more advanced than Yahoo's and should compete well with Google. Also, let's not forget the HUGE deal that Microsoft did recently to provide advertising to Facebook. The dude who wrote this is an idiot.
- edxeno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Read Ray Ozzie's memo from last year. They know about this ad-supported stuff, and they're not looking to squash it. "Windows Live" anyone?
I'm much more of an Apple/Google/Firefox fan, but this story is just so pointless and off-base that I felt the need to respond. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1AdCenter has excellent conversion rates compared to YPN and AdSense.
Both YPN and AdSense are plagued by "made for ads" sites that get plenty of clicks (deceptively) but no conversions. No conversions is not a good thing.

http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?url=facebook.com
Facebook is the 61 most visited site on the internet according to Alexa. That means they have not only traffic, but lots of it. Oh yeah - they have 10,000,000 users too. That's nearly 20x what digg has. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow...and I tought Windows Live/Web 2.0 offering WAS ad-driven? lol
- Burritovision, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would like to publish my extended commentary on this topic, dated some 4 days prior by myself, William Bunker.
http://receiptforlabor.blogspot.com/2006/10/tech-sector_06.html
It seems that this topic was also touched upon today, October 10, by a Mr Ujwal Tickoo.
I ask you, sirs, how much money can you make in 4 days? And what can you do with that money? - mindtrap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Writely won't hurt microsoft right away. But I used Google's office suite solution yesterday (docs.google.com) and it was very nice to use.
If I were given the option to buy Microsoft Word/Office or use Google's office tool, I would use Google's office tools hands down. It does what I need it to go and it's light and loads up much faster than word. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No no ... this isn't companies competing with each other, this is a ficticious work about online service + open source + ad supported (three largely unrelated models) = the death of Microsoft.
- yaosio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Slow down here, companies compete with each other? What the hell?
- zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm no Microsoft fan.
But the only issue between Microsoft and everyone else is here are a few companies
that Microsoft has not found a way to crush out of existence.
These companies are in a market segments that M$ can't dominiate.
No matter how much money Microsoft spends.
Microsoft standard operation procedure is to cut off a competes air. ("cash").
Then slowly squeeze them to death. (Force the competition to spend more and more of there cash reserves till they expire or quit. *Netscape*)
It's hard to cut off Google air.
About the only thing that M$ could do is start giving away access to there web advertising for free. I don't see them doing that.
8 Years ago Microsoft was the last surviving mega company in the tech space that matter.
Now nibbing and chewing on its ass are a few fresh companies and even company's that were left for dead. Apple Computer.
If you have one flea on you. Its easy to find and crush. But Microsoft is flea infested and even there new flea spray "vista" wont make the itch go away.
Google, apple, yahoo, eBay, Open Source, Sony, Oracle. - entr0py, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I thought this was going to be about the hot chicks on my sidebar telling me to buy T-shirts...
*sigh* - JQP123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Then the piece of crap claims ad-supported + open source could finish MS."
Unless MS gradually moves toward on-line services which; as the article points out, they are doing. Ad-supported won't work for everything, there will probably be a lot of subscription based services as well. And good ole desktop apps will still be hanging around too for quite some time. On-line services won't work for everything. - JQP123, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Across the computer industry, value is moving from the desktop to network-connected services."
Thank you, Captain Obvious.
Slightly less obvious (less discussed anyway) may be fact that this could be as much a threat to Open Source as MS. In a world focused on on-line services, what roles does Open Source play? Does anyone really know or even care if the service they're using is based on Open Source code or not?
In changing times, a key ingredient to look for is the ability to adapt and overcome. MS is at least aware of the situation and has started making some moves in this regard. What is Open Source doing? Everyone in Open Source land seems to still be focused on the desktop. - plamoni, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Am I the only one who saw the title and wondered, "what is an online model? is it like a catalog model? or a swimsuit model?"...
