- jollyholly, on 10/10/2007, -2/+18Even if Facebook is the most popular site on the internet in terms of traffic (which it could be), they can't touch Google search..
- thorpus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13@1laradream: Just because it seems like Google doesn't have a plan doesn't mean that they don't have a plan.
- civperc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Mahalo is a joke, just like Calacanis.
- DJCult, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Because when I need to scour the trenches of the interwebs, I go to Facebook.
- 1laradream, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Google definitely has all the technologies, they just need to get their act together and implement them. They`re like a dog in the woods - too many trees! Thought provoking stuff.
- diggitizer, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8This is pure brilliance. This and the original post. Pure brilliant example of why google is right, and all the light weight, high noise of web 2.0 will fade and give us a true web app future.
Don't foget, gmail WAS web2.0. Despite YEARS of 'ajax', gmail was the defining moment. Google does so much now, but in such a behind the scenes way, that in 3-4 years you will see the fruit born of their current enterprises.
I say facebook + jaiku + wtf is mahalo? + all that other ***** like twitter == account fad.
People racing to sign up to all the latest betas to establish their name flag in case one becomes big.
useful? twitter? go ***** yourself if it does something for you that you couldn't do before - Cmstech, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8When did someone say Mahalo, Techmeme, and Facebook *Would* Replace Google?
- totorototoro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Scoble's post (and vids) shows up in Techmeme AND Google-Google caught it in 20 minutes after he posted the videos. When did "Mahalo" index it?
- noblepaladin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Social Networking and Internet Search are pretty different things. Facebook will grow, but it won't make internet search obsolete.
- totorototoro, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Did you read Scoble's post? You know, the one titled: "Why Mahalo, TechMeme, and Facebook are going to kick Google’s butt in four years" ? :p
- FredFredrickson, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6Why would Facebook replace Google in the first place? I'm sorry, but I don't think any of these lame social network sites will ever replace any of the world's most popular search engines... that doesn't even make sense.
- 11Heather, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Never is a big claim. Google rose from nowhere really fast. Facebook is enjoying similar meteoric ascent, so who's to say the next Google hasn't been heard of yet? Never say never.
- jmnormand, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3two problems with this, number one the users have to be willing to commit the time to do so. and two the collective intelligence that all the face book users are willing to devote to this is not going to touch the intelligence of full time google engineers...
- jellygraph, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Facebook I know of...
Mahalo & Techmeme, I have no clue what they are and don't really care to find out - Soave, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Because I've never heard of Mahalo or Techmeme.
- michaelb1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Also, facebook sucks. It's the emporers new clothes. Everyone thinks it is cool because they think it is the new thing.
when in reality it sucks and nobody wants to stand out as the voice of reason and say "no, I don't like facebook but you go right ahead and use it." - OhBrian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Does that mean he is a shill who doesn't get paid?
- slugicide, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2If you're quoting Scoble, you're part of the circle-jerk.
- purpmint008, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3http://www.techmeme.com/
lol - UWake911, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3facebook is crap. Lamer site.
- mjesq, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2very well written and thought provoking...google is a powerhouse!
- Harbinger67, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"Facebook is enjoying similar meteoric ascent"
But...meteors descend? - rudy23, on 10/10/2007, -5/+7Fits of all what kind of a dumbass title is this.
google = search
facebook = whatever crap its is. - fajita, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Ummmm, so why the fsck would Facebook replace Google?
Unless I missed the memo, Google is a search engine company that also provides a wide variety of internet applications.
While, Facebook is a social networking website/company? - Gnarled, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1A similarly provocative article: Why apples will never replace oranges.
- wildmXranat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Facebook is so lame. Same goes for most socially-justified-waste-the-time-posting-crap-noone-else-will-ever-read sites. Who gives a F@ck if your facebook status is set to 'I'm straightening my hair', or something else thats bogus.
- jmnormand, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I agree, facebook and google serve completely different services and to think either one could replace the other is foolish. now mahalo is more oriented toward googles primary business but replacing it will not happen, though coexistence is possible. i will say this is the first ive heard of techmeme which doesnt bode well for it either...
- hiro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What, Google is going to take over from Infoseek? Nah, can't see it
- gridiron, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I've never even heard of the first two...
How could they replace something even my grandmother uses? - jmnormand, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1its more likely the next facebook will pop up long before the next google.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Google will be it's own undoing, privacy concerns, click fraud etc. Every time google gets bad publicity they are giving other search engines a boost.
- gregmo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1its not about the search so much as what is being indexed, and how vital/valuable the information is
- jmnormand, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1i now know why ive never heard of them... thats supose to replace google???
- jmnormand, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11. do a bunch of public stuff that looks completely random
2. ??? -> sell lots and lots of advertising
2. profit
googles plan is quite simple. draw as much attention and traffic to their sites as possible. and it seems to be working pretty well for them. - FredFredrickson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Altavista was the worst search engine ever.
- michaelb1, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Wow! That was the most inept argument I have heard in a long time.
- smek2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I'm so sick of this Facebook spam, and all those "Why Facebook will replace Google" vs "Why Facebook will never replace Google" ***** from self proclaimed experts.
- FredFredrickson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Huh?
- rabiddogma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1While I agree that the premise of his post is laughable, Scoble doesn't own or work for Mahalo or techmeme or facebook.
- trollick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Even apples will never replace oranges.
- heifetz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1All three sites serve a niche area of the web. They'll be great if you're searching for specific things in their niche area, but if you want to search the general web, Google is the best product, and will continue to be unless a better general purpose search engine comes along.
- phlogiston99, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Why flying airplanes, hamsters and oatmeal will never replace pick-nick on a Sunday afternoon.
This is brilliant! I should get a patent copyright from the DMCA. - OhBrian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Thanks for providing the link to Scoble's blog. Does he pay you a nickel for every visitor?
- BevansDesign, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Saying that Facebook could never replace Google is like saying that Microsoft will never replace McDonald's. They're two completely different thinigs.
I've never heard of those other two things, so I'm willing to bet that they won't be replacing Google any time soon either. - fkr3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm saying it won't. That's who.
You're one of those ***** retards who think digg replaces traditional news sites by linking to them aren't you. - slugicide, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1That's because there's no one quite as stupid as you. Do you use Facebook? No. Do you know that one of the creators of Firefox now works for Facebook, threatening the scene with a truly disruptive technology? No. Because you are a ***** moron.
- MrUnderbridge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Two different issues.
By saying 'Facebook will replace Google', people are really claiming that social bookmarking will somehow supplant regular-ass query-based search. That I see as relatively unlikely anytime soon. The closest thing is Wiki, which in many ways *is* replacing Google for searches of subject-based materials. But facebook? No way. Hell, that crap is what I'm trying to *avoid* when I'm searching.
The question of whether another search company can come in and eat Google's lunch is another matter entirely. I think it's unlikely short-term, because Google is far more powerful than AltaVista ever thought of being. But giants can be killed, make no doubt. - fermi, on 10/10/2007, -5/+5Scoble blows goats; Mahalo won't even exist in four years.
- jamminman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0or, google could just buy all of them.
- wassim2k, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I didn't know that those three were contenders to replace Google.
