- Bdog2g2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15If you read the book "The Search" the author points out that Yahoo in the beginning was much like Google is now. They were young, full of cash, and splurged on its developers. After the .COM crash Yahoo lost so much money, they had to begin cutting back on the needless perks and be more fiscally responsible.
The author also puts in perspective that, GOOGLE won't necessarily be filthy rich forever. If that becomes the case, they may be the new Yahoo. But for now Life is Good at Google - muffins, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Least professional article I've read. I don't like it when people post links to some kids blog.
- shakin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Yahoo seems like a great place to work. Google may have more perks, but that alone doesn't make it a great place to work.
Now compare Yahoo to a Fortune 500 company and see where you'd rather end up. - brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I worked at Yahoo! for 3 years, and despite what any Googler tells you, they are there for the pay, stock options, and their resume - which no one would *ever* whisper while employed.
Many of us at Yahoo! had command-line scripts which would tell us how much money we would make if we picked up the phone and exercised our options *right now*, and ran it about 40 times a day at least. Your girlfriend was Maria Bartiromo and you ate three meals a day watching CNBC.
If you were there for free coffee, foozball, or scooter rides that makes officially made you a moron, or an intern. You sure as hell arent there to live in Silicon Valley, cause Silicon Valley blows big time.
If you are wondering what its like to be an engineer, simply sit in a cube, cat(1) some source code across your screen for 8 hours, and then spend an hour in a really boring meeting where you are assigned more work while simultaneously being asked when your current work will be done, and can you add feature x, y, and z? While you are at the meeting, stuff breaks.
That is the experience of any google coder, any yahoo coder, and any microsoft coder.
The foozball tables are there for photo ops with the founders, but 95% of the employees are monkeys in cubes who are trying to get home at a reasonable hour so they can have a real life, just like the rest of silicon valley.
BTW there isnt an engineer in SV who doesnt know what a mango lasse is, because all of your coworkers are Hindi vegetarians which limits your group lunches to Indian buffets 5 times a week. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"Everyone at Yahoo is on Yahoo Instant Messenger. Unlike the real world, where everyone's on AIM except that one "fight the power" AOL hater. And she's on Skype."
Really? Everyone at Sun Microsystems is on Jabber. They have jabber servers spread all over the world, too. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Just to make it clear... you evaluate a place to work at for the coffee machines, free drinks/food/drugs/whatever and don't care for things like pension plan, stability, training ?, geez... I thought the age of the mirrors, t-shirts and combs (aka stupid perks) was over.
- PoingFerret, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13Simply put: better incentives to work there, nicer perks/ownership and generally a fiercer criteria to become an employee there. Google's offered a culture wherein you put forward a cool idea and it gets looked at seriously. That seems like a rarity these days.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5So we are measuring companies to work for by the freebies and social activities they offer. Time to pull my money out of the stock market and put it into bonds again. *sigh*
- dielawn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7better place to work, not search.
- sonofagunn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6OMG GOogle is the R0XX0rZ!!!!
Did you know Google is more nutritious than broccoli?
Smarter than Einstein and Stephen Hawking combined?
The only thing more powerful than Chuck Norris?
OMGOMGOMG!!!!
Seriously, aren't these stories - I mean fanboi blogs - getting old? - Bigz2084, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"...Unlike the real world, where everyone's on AIM ..." Keeping in mind the real world constitutes more than the U.S., a much larger portion of the real world uses Windows Messenger. AIM is almost exclusively in the U.S.
- khag7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7yeah but... your name is muffins..i would think someone as professional as yourself would have a more profesional name.. haha.. muffins.. wow
- haochi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Why it's cooler to work at Yahoo than Google

The title is wrong btw, it should be "intern". - Peter, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Read the post first. This story is based off that. That one is about how Yahoo is awesome. This one is about how Yahoo may be awesome, but Google is better, which is what the title and description are about. So no, the real story is not there.
- jtrost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm surprised he's allowed to blog about this. Every place I've interned at has had strict rules about not blogging about the company, good or bad.
- Garaphin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Worst front page article ever. Isn't there a video of a monkey eating poo somewhere that can replace this?
- Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Anyone who has to google mango lassi is a heathen.
- tylerni7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"As the kids would say, you got pwned" Sorry muffins. (I'm just kidding muffins is a great name ;-) )
- HPSauce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's only an internship.
- HPSauce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Who cares? It's like comparing living at Buckingham Palace to the Whitehouse - both are going to be far far more luxurious than your average detached house, just like Google and Yahoo and other great tech companies are better than Generic Office X.
- docillenstein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Not a lot of content to the story... but the recipe link for the mango lassi was nice
- pbjohnson79, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A friend of mine got a job there a little while ago, and he loves it...so many freebies (lunches, etc) it would be the perfect place to work.
- scloopy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Oops ignoreme
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Any corporation that gives a hoot about security is on either Jabber or Sametime.
- thewalrusami, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4What a spiteful and foolish article.

- Ilyanep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where's 'there'?
- chesterjosiah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Are you saying Google is a better place to work but not a better website for Search?
- Hoov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well if that wasn't one ***** of a blog...
- julesverne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Alas, at least they have jobs. And with actual perks.
When I'm not slaving, I spend most of my day reading about people with better lives than me on digg.
bahaha.
If you'll excuse me, I have to go spend a priceless dollar on a coffee.
But, seriously. A job with ANY perks would be sweet. Who's complaining? - dustyshadow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, any company that REALLY cares about security doesn't allow any chat.
- Opiate, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Wow, Is this guy 12 or something?
- ericnmu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Barely any content in that worthless read.
- NickDouglas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Of course, I'm just kidding -- Yahoo is much cooler to work at than Google.
http://digg.com/tech_news/Why_it_s_cooler_to_work_at_Yahoo_than_Google - crossers, on 07/14/2008, -0/+0I want to say, that I can't find great different between Google and Yahoo, of course there are!
I think there are good for work! somebody's enjoy yahoo and others enjoy google!

Canada must be lame since most of us use MSN. Most people here don't even know what AIM is. Oh well. Lame is the new cool. - perfectfire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I have to agree. I read the intern's blog post and there isn't anything in there that would indicate that Yahoo is somehow worse than Google. The way they reamed his post I thought the guy would be raving about indoor plumbing or something utterly common, but it turns out that Yahoo sounds like pretty decent place from his description. And remember, all of Google's perks are still in BETA!! :-)
- muffins, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Oh, that's really exciting, that's so--MATT CUTTS, BITCH."
Don't forget this. - VinSomething, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can have IM in the workplace and still have security. We use IMLogic - recently acquired by Symantec.
http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/imlogic/index.jsp - MrSidnet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Mmm, mango lassi.
useless article, but rather entertaining if you follow the obvious links - DougTanner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1It's pronounced "PWEENED" not "PUNNED", and everyone uses MSN not AIM (well, those not on Trillian).
- mtrip, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Plus, Google won't turn you into the Chinese authorities so you can serve 10 years in prison! Pwned!
- cybernetic798, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3And Microsoft is better than either.
- asphinx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0too much icing at google. how good is it to work for them - as good as working for anyone. open up your own...anything...and you'll be better off than most of those "googlers". as for how good it is compared to yahoo - yeah i am sure there are worse places than those two and whether you are stuck in either one doesn't really matter...
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I'm sure Yahoo! is one of the better companies to work for.
- jo42, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Uhm, because only yahoos work at Yahoo?
- TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1kai.
evidence? - mynuts, on 10/12/2007, -10/+6This links to a blog filled with ads. The real story is here: http://paulstamatiou.com/2006/06/27/inside-yahoo/
- dmron, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3Whoopee.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3Indeed google is a better place to work. I love working there. :D
