- vemerge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30That happened after Google became #1.
- simonwright, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24A site with a page rank of 7. That is not easy to achieve. We're talking about sites with popularity somewhere between Ars and Digg.

Irony. - po43292, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27Google search is #1 because the general public uses the word Google as a verb when referring to web searches.
- shadcrkd, on 10/12/2007, -9/+28Don't use the first comment to post a dumb response to a dumb question ;__;
- kitwaites, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19PR is pagerank - the value given to the page by Google based on the quality and quantity of links. Can be from PR0 (no links) to PR10 (basically, Google).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PageRank - snakesonasam, on 10/12/2007, -8/+25whats PR7
- bariswheel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21Happy cows make good cheese.
Happy workers make good products. - Earlofnecromium, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16theres' other search engines besides google?
- vemerge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9That is for total views from Alexa toolbar users, not just search engine totals. Yahoo as a directory is monstrous, and has a lot more "services" than Google, as does MSN.
- keyboardduder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10yahoo uses security preferences too, theyre not #1
/pwnd - englishganxta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9OK those words confuse the ***** out of me and probably most people, but I've always prefered Google over other search engines because it's faster and much simpler.
- loconet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10So hey, is the pay at Microsoft any good?
- TravisG5, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I've heard rumors but... hey why don't you go google that.
- thesparrowband, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6i always figured google was able to pull ahead of the other search engines because it was the only one that didn't have clutter. it was just a white screen with the search bar, which is asthetically attractive to the common user. once they obtained this lead, their superior searching took them the rest of the way.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6If i block him, how can I view the insults directed at him?
- Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"its on a scale from 1-10 the higher it is, the higher ur site will be in googles results. theres ***** of algorithms it uses to calculate pagerank."
Funny how you claim that every digg reader knows this while you don't know yourself. No, it's not the higher your PageRank is the higher you end up in the search results. It's not that easy. It's perfectly possible for a PageRank 3 page to be #1 and a PageRank 7 on #33 for the same search. Hence people need to think a bit about what's on the page as well otherwise it would be just getting (or buying ) a PageRank 7 (for example). It's more about content.
And no, there are no ***** of algorithms to calculate PageRank. Calculating PR is not that hard. It's all the other things Google takes into account to calculate a position on the SERP that is complicated. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Sooo... how do I get to the google again?
- quickgold192, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It was also one of the first good crawlers. I remember using dogpile.com back in the day and getting 10 or 20 results from all the engines and then google would have a few thousand. So, eventually I just skipped dogpile and went to google and there's been no reason to switch. Had the current windows live search been around back then i think it would be the current leader, even if google is a little better.
- inspecality, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Can anyone explain what "PR7" is?
- Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"A PR7 site has a whole lot of links coming in" No, that's not necessarily true. It's possible to get a PR7 site with just a few links, if those links are coming from pages with high or very high PR.
- inspecality, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I googled it thanks. Here's a quote from the first result. "PR6 to PR7 Search Engine Optimization. ... Would anyone out there know what it takes to go from PR6 to PR7? I have heard you need 5 times the number of ..."
Try googling it yourself guys. - Patton, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Google's returned results have next to nothing to do with the author's point. The Live crawler, on the other hand, just got blacklisted at the firewall in front of all my servers today because it's gone bonkers, and continues to try, multiple times per day, to crawl pages that do not exist, and have never existed, on my servers.
- ogletree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This article is stupid. The writer knows nothing about why Google is on top. People could care less about how fast it is. I personally do not notice how much faster google is than yahoo or msn. A few years ago people used to say that Google was better than Yahoo when Yahoo was exactly the same. Yahoo search was provided by Google. Google is number one because it is the only search engine that looks like a search engine. People want to go to a clean front page with no ads. Yahoo and MSN are portals first and a search engine second. Google could start using Yahoo search results and still be way on top. Google will stay on top because they are now ingrained in pop culture as the place to search for things. I see the verb "googled" on TV every day now. People go to MS for MS products and people go to Yahoo to play games, read news, get maps, and book flights. People go to Google when they want to find something.
- keyboardduder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4its better because not only does it look for phrases mentioned in the search, it looks to the links to the page that are spelled or spelled like the way you searched. Thats how people "googlebombed" GW Bush for the word "Failure". They linked the word "failure" to Dubya's white house profie many times. So many that it became the top search.
- ogletree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Right now Google is very slow and Yahoo is updating smaller sites faster. Google takes up to a week sometimes on smaller sites before they update the page. Yahoo is much faster right now in getting fresh results. By your explanation yahoo should now be number one.
- ogletree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2then how do you explain how Google beat Yahoo when they served the same results? Your explanation is wrong. Do you even know about websites. There is a large number of people that think google works because they use it instead of the address bar. Your prob right if you are talking about a very small group of people that actually know about the web but what you said has nothing to do with why the masses use Google more than any other search engine.
- fastseotest, on 01/30/2009, -0/+1google is the best
http://www.fastseotest.com - JasonCox, on 10/12/2007, -7/+8Google crawls smarter? I dont think so. Google returns far more results than any other search engine by pulling results that have noting to do with 70% of the query. Search engines such as Live are far more accurate then Google is in returning relavent results, but hell, I still use Google anyway.
- AhmedF, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No - the point is that Google's results are more expansive and updated far more quickly. Its not just about results, its about how 'fresh' the results are.
But thanks for letting me know that I know nothing :) - sven007, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4blocked!
- fani, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Actually I'm using Yahoo these days as its search seems to find more relevant matches.....
Essentially don't just use one search engine, use multiple for optimum results - kitwaites, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7...although that was unintentional - the reason why it is so simple was cause Brin and Page didn't know enough HTML to design a more complex page.
- hmaugans, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1http://www.duggmirror.com
- cayennenator, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Very strange. sweet!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Faster searching, better result, more accurate results. It has also some other features like converting currency with just typing 1 USD to GBP it will give you the result, you can also get the time by typing What is the current time, or what is the time in US.. and so on...
- dt40, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Indeed. For example, go to Google and enter "search" and see what you get. ;-)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3"It simply crawls faster and smarter."
It doesn't take a Google engineer to figure that out. :p - Tanishh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The commenting system on that site is terrible...that's really all I have to say. I use Google, always have. Fast and usually the first page has what I need.
- sallos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2this is exactly the reason why google is wrong for just going after high PR sites like the one in the article.
- unsolicited, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Has anyone tried http://www.aspseek.com
It is open source clone of Google - sallos, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3This article doesn't show at all why google is #1. A PR7 site has a whole lot of links coming in. MSN and Yahoo tend to index sites with less links coming in a lot better. Just because a site doesn't have a lot of links doesn't mean that it doesn't have the answer you are looking for or that the site with links weren't obtained through forum and blog spamming. From my experience MSN and Yahoo get the site indexed right away and google puts it off for a few weeks until it really starts ripping in. MSN and Yahoo also tend to get the results into the SERPs a lot faster then Google after indexing from what I have seen. But those are just my results, it varies every time.
- kingygk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Google is number one because they won the brand wars. They still need to fix the 9/11 google bombs. They still promote the 9/11 disinformation sites.
- davidlee41, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0google maybe fast but who would notice its fast unless it was used, more and more people are going to sites via other sites or via recommendations, web 2 sites like digg arent helping matters
- hayesy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Believe it or not, I think there is someone who actually managed to improve google.
www.searchkindly.org uses google search, but every time you use it 1/3 of a cent is donated to charity!
I think its a fantastic site that everyone should use. As they say, "If you're going to search, why not Search Kindly?" - thedude1181984, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Because their KISS design is much better than other cluttered ones
- Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1"A site with a page rank of 7. That is not easy to achieve." It is, I got it: http://johnbokma.com/ :-)
Now for PageRank 8... Maybe later this year, otherwise next year, who knows.
You must just be very smart and selective in getting links. At one time 2 sites of mine ( http://castleamber.com/ and the former) were PageRank 7 :-)
And it has nothing to do with popularity (as in visitors) as in "We're talking about sites with popularity somewhere between Ars and Digg.". When both my sites had PR7 I had added up 200 daily visitors. It's perfectly possible to have a PR7 site with 50 visitors a day.
On the other hand, PageRank is quite overrated those days. Focus on content and you will get links. - pw1388, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5SPAM!!!!!!!!!
- banthis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1because it's google and it all started out in a garage?
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4Jesus the article is about Google and people still can't think to search.
