it appears that the "thumbs up" button is broken. please fix this at the earliest convenience.
thanks. - pilobilus, on 04/13/2008, -7/+11Is it safe to come out yet?

- Webwonk, on 04/12/2008, -5/+5Akamai says it has equipment in about 1,000 different networks in 70 countries, including most major ISPs and peering points. They're smaller installations, tho. They have about 30,000 servers deployed, while Google is estimated to have at least 400,000 servers in its data centers. More on Akamai:

- 1SockChuck, on 04/12/2008, -5/+2No. 10 on the US map is Atlanta. The original item at Data Center Knowledge notes that there are two Google data centers in Atlanta, one of which is at Quality Tech.
- PL3NTY, on 04/13/2008, -8/+5Google also have a whole floor in a London level3 data centre that I work in...
- chubbybunny, on 04/12/2008, -6/+3Uh, tried to edit this in there but thanks to the wonderfully wacky digg comments system I wasn't able to. Anyways...
While I was there it was also quite interesting to be able to sample the 'Google way' of doing things, such as food from the vending machines for the office workers of the contracted companies as well as the catered lunches they where served every day. I hadn't had a Publix sub since I began living in the north a few years back and it was a nice change of pace. Those things are damn tasty.
I hope I'm up to Google-caliber by the time I graduate because it'd be one of the places I'd absolutely love to work for. - MrCrispyChicken, on 04/13/2008, -4/+1Well aren't you just amazing....
- Lutremi, on 04/12/2008, -20/+15NOOOOOOOOO I'M TOO YOUNG TO DIEEEEEEEE
- DataCenterCrazy, on 04/12/2008, -10/+5The Google facility in Ann Arbor is the HQ for AdWords, and is an office building, not a data center. Only people there, not servers.
Here's a link about the facility:
http://www.informationweek.com/shared/printableArt ... - chubbybunny, on 04/12/2008, -10/+5I've been lucky enough to visit the center outside of Charleston, SC. It's absolutely amazing to see the space that is dedicated to the sever farms and really puts in perspective the amount of time and money that is put into Google's infrastructure.
- omgitsmit, on 04/13/2008, -8/+3I dugg everyone up, wtf is going on?
- 0ldmankdude, on 04/12/2008, -12/+7i haven't seen it yet, so ***** you
- JewelsNorth, on 04/18/2008, -9/+4Some friends interviewed for the Google data center in Ann Arbor, MI during summer of 2006. I don't see it listed here though.

http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/3975/6698xz8im.jp ... - fkr3, on 04/12/2008, -7/+2Population density in Australia, and I'm guessing lack of internet in most of Africa, makes it unnecessary. Google's got offices in Australia though so it's not like Australia's being left out.
I'm surprised TechCrunch bothered mentioning all the secondary services google operates but few people use. I'm pretty sure a significant share of their servers would be devoted to crunching our numbers and profiling us, and almost all of the rest for search. - whiskeredjohn, on 04/12/2008, -5/+0That was SEA-ME-WE 4 (cut near Marseilles) & FLAG FALCON (Alexandria or Cairo I think).
What a fun morning that was!
There are plenty of maps if you Google. - bilbus, on 04/12/2008, -11/+6google rents space in QTS datacenter in atlanta. Its not on the map
- YodaJones, on 04/12/2008, -10/+5I would like to see a map indicating Microsoft and Yahoo's overlaid with Google's data centers to get some perspective on the Microsoft Yahoo buyout.
- Emachine, on 04/12/2008, -13/+7I was expecting actual Google Maps links with satellite photos driving directions. :(
my ping to google.ca is 10ms, can't be too far... - mburner21, on 04/13/2008, -9/+3There's one on satellite blvd in northeast atlanta, right before it intersects mcginnis ferry road. My friend was at this high security data place and asked who rented all this space at the other end and they guy that worked there said something along the lines of, "i can't tell you but it rhymes with 'oogle'"
- YodaJones, on 04/12/2008, -10/+4I would also like to see a map of the undersea cables that were cut a while back on this map.
- kinerry, on 04/13/2008, -9/+3Council Bluffs, IA representing!
- stinkypyper, on 04/12/2008, -15/+9It's not hard to keep something like this secret. Many data centers house equipment for Banks, ISP's, and other big Corporates. People who take their data seriously, Google isn't the only important one there. Anytime I have been to one it was all thumb scans, bullet proof glass, and lots of camouflage to blend it in with the surrounding buildings.
- Shadowgamers, on 04/12/2008, -7/+1Send it some Scrabble
- inactive, on 04/12/2008, -15/+8Digg me up, Scotty!
- Shadowgamers, on 04/12/2008, -12/+5I wonder how many Datacenters it would take for Google to start beating Akamai...
- sfrench, on 04/12/2008, -8/+1Good call, wonder who is 411-GOOG.

- killbert24, on 04/12/2008, -15/+7This is cool. Its amazing to comprehend the amount of information these things hold, and how much work revolved around it all.
- bigbill780, on 04/12/2008, -15/+7In Australia the water spins down the pipes in the opposite direction. Obviously this messes up their internet tubes. I mean c'mon, its not a truck.
