- purpmint008, on 10/10/2007, -3/+45Buried as useless.
If you're referring to this then you need a mental rehaul. Common sense > this stupid chart. - bobcrotch, on 10/10/2007, -2/+28Paper or water? A how-to on washing your ass.
Seriously, this is stupid middle management feel-important type crap. - nepdogg, on 10/10/2007, -4/+26How many people will learn nothing from this flow chart and email this pic in the body of their email?
- LordSkywalker, on 10/10/2007, -2/+23Is this chart retarded? --------------------> YES
- CrimsonBlur, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16Who is actually digging this? Totally useless...
- cmgarcia, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12Haha, they probably have this flow chart in the lobby at Initech.
- peter337, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Buried, God Damnit! I will have to write an article for the author of this article. The title will be - "When To Use Flow Charts & When Not To"
- RubberChicken, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8New Title: "When not to use a flow chart"
- lithuin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I'm going to email this pic in the body of an email... as a joke to my manager.
This is the stupidest thing I've ever seen, and I once saw a guy punch himself on the crotch.
"Hey Bill, could you email me those sales figures?" - "Let me consult my flow chart first. Nope, it says I should set up a wiki, and then use desktop video, free, not commercial, to discuss it with you."
This flow chart has also taught me that there is an intrinsic feature difference between commercial software and free software. Apparently, free desktop video software can by definition only support up to 20 people. For that 21st person, you need to pay. - RubberChicken, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Did you read the part about "when not to comment"? Seriously, if someone sent this to me I'd be pissed and would probably never talk to the sender again.
- Brodels, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Thanks, I've just emailed this to everyone in the office.
- ozydingo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5That's a hugely over-complicated model. Try this one: use email when it makes sense to do so.
- LethalAmbition, on 10/10/2007, -3/+6OK, this is lame.
- Sherazard, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I hate micromanagers with all my being.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3hence the fundamental flaw in digg - there isn't always news.
- Brodels, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Thanks, I find people that have no sense of humour pretty annoying too.
- ubuwalker31, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3So, if I need to have a complex back and forth discussion, neither e-mail nor IM is appropriate? *****.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2This might be the most retarded thing I've seen posted to Digg in years.
- smedrick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2If you need a chart like this to know how to communicate properly, you should probably reconsider your career path.
There are plenty of blue collar jobs to go around. - surfing, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2looks like this was made with MS Paint.
- Urzeitlich, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I thought this was a joke.
- lou2005, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I thought it was bizare that nothing on the flow chart says "make phone call"
- andrew522, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1nice movie reference.
- S1L3NTC, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Step One: GROW A ***** BRAIN.
Step Two: Stop drooling. - antdude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Too bad this won't work for me because I have speech and hearing impediments to communicate orally. :(
- ac2u, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Of course you'll be dugg down, unfortunately, digg has a whole army of nuts who follow this common-sense crap like it's a religion. However, just to piss them off, i'm digging your comment back up!
- CatalystGhost, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Sorry, it's more like this:
Is this chart retarded? -> Yes -> Close tab
|
No -> Yes it is, start over. - echolyean, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Perhaps for yourself, but when working in a collaborative environment, not everyone you work with has the same level of "common sense", as you put it, and this is, I think, a nice way for everyone in the same group to have an agreed upon strategy, whether or not they modify this one.
- mstoneburner, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I am totally emailing this link to everyone on my contact list.
- sabret00the, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Not sure i'd go that far but you're right. It's not something to just say, hey i thought this is something we could all use. Mention it before hand and if people ask you to forward it on then do so.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Think it was called Clippit
- echolyean, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I don't believe *I* would need a flowchart like this, but you don't always have a choice of people with whom you work so my point was mainly to say that it could be a good way to address the issue of working with such people. Having not put this into practice myself, I'm not going to defend or condemn it as a solid approach.
- philo23, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1"Does the matter require iterative back-and-forth discussion? -> yes" sounds like they haven't heard of Gmail conversations...
- compgeek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1that flow chart was just annoying. I was thinking maybe a nicely prepared article saying that if there was an easier medium whether you could physically go talk to the person etc. not this crappy flowchart. buried as lame
- getagrip59, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Have you ever worked for the government? This looks like something they would spend millions to study, then produce worthless documentation.
- josegutz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Clippy...(sniffles) He's always been there for me. (more sniffles)
- b0rg, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1After a couple of years in corporate IT, the quick and easy answer is "Is the email I'm about to write something I would be happy with my employer, family, spouse, children, parents, and friends seeing?"
If the answer is no, then click that "X" in the top left. Really.
(yeah, people still do everything that comment implies they shouldn't, even when you give them a BIG ***** NOTICE that it's being archived, logged, and does not go away ever) - dasunst3r, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1For some reason, some folks think that Facebook/social networking sites are the way to go. I despise it -- no formatting tools and (especially) the small space for me to write the message in. I didn't buy a 1680*1050 screen to write in that pitifully small space.
- tradwolley, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2I was going to e-mail this link to everyone, but after using the chart, I think a wiki would be my better option
- Frezzle, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2i loves me some apple pie!
- chrismgtis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1This whole "email isn't the correct way to communicate" or "email is out of style" ideology going around is quite annoying. It is very useful, convenient, fast and efficient, no different than it was at any time in the last 10 years or so.
And this chart is utterly and completely useless. - eambabo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Stupid chart - and what about the phone? ::gasp::
- RubberChicken, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0What kind of example does this flow chart give? "This is urgent. Why did you email instead of call? You should've called." O yeah, this flowchart is going to do wonders. /sarcasm
- josegutz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1This happened on a group email string....
Female (let's just call her Stacy) : "Hey (lets just call him Greg) from the group asked me out, and I don't want to date anyone from the group...WHat should I do?"
Apparently Stacy had replied to a string and everyone in the group recieved the message, including the poor sap that asked her out....
In the meantime I am bombarded with emails asking for explanations of how this happened. I replied to all "Stupidity?" - adamogiovane, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Oh come, knock the message not the messenger people! Yeah the flow chart is a bit long but it makes sense. Speaking of making sense many people don't know whether to use E-Mail or phone. So many times I'm caught in an E-Mail when picking up the phone and pushing a few buttons, though physically draining by mouse-click and keyboard typing standard is better.
One can gauge so much more in person than on an E-Mail. Written word can easily be misinterpreted. Plus you can't detect some lying when they type an E-Mail.
The flow chart is good for offices with more than say 20 people that actively work together. - filcreative, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1People need to be told how to communicate, Because puny brains can't figure it out. Now if my brain had the all powerful PS3 processor in it I might be able to figure out which form of communication to use. Good thing for the internet and this article to point me in the right direction.
- danomagnum, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I was expecting satire... needless to say I was disappointed.
- cmgarcia, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Too

Breaks - BobTurtle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0This is a point that is lost on so many people (in a business setting). I had learned this lesson in an MBA class and have since observed people violate it and pay dearly for violating it. You could call it the Myspace rule - Don't put it out there unless you are OK with everyone you know reading it.
- davidlyness, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I need no chart to tell me how to communicate.
I've got Clippy. -
