- DrewBlood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've really improved my book collection using http://www.paperbackswap.com. This site is pretty much the same thing, but I like that PBS is strictly a 1 for 1 trade, so no BS about point values.
- hotdoggy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4yeah i'm really impressed. as a college student this is an amazing idea
- DangerMouse9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You know, a simple solution to all this would be to force the spellcheck. Once you click submit, it does the spellcheck and you have to click it again. :)
Or did the designers/developers not program the code behind the buttons themselves? - saifatlast, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4>> seems like it works on the same principle as lala.com.
Which is helpful, since of course, everyone here knows how lala.com works. - Areku, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been looking for something like this ever since I started using BarterBee. I wished they'd start doing books on BB, but now I have somwhere else to go for that. :)
- brianjameskirk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2WhatsOnMyBookshelf seems like a great idea but too bad there are only 200 books available right now. Most of them are cheesy Walmart paperbacks and now that I've posted 3 or 4 15-20$ literature books, I'm regretting my trade options.
- Tiabin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Got my digg. Saw the announcement in my inbox earlier.
- MonTemplar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Interesting idea... bit light on information at the moment on their website (I'm assuming it's primarily for trading within the USA), so I'll check back in a month or so to see how it's shaping up, and what people think of it.
- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm still kinda confused about how this works.... so I send them a book and they give me points or do I just register what books I have and then they give me points... which I can use to get books?
*puzzle* - johnie1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2just use Bookcrossing, it's much nicer (:
- kevinduvall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sounds like an excellent site for delicious library to get partnered with.
- Ravensky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How the hell does that break the TOS? If you still have the book, it's no problem, and it's just an easier way of entering ISBN info. Now, if you enter books that you dont have anymore, THAT is breaking the TOS.
- lcarsdeveloper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Interesting site, looks like they have either the same concept or a very similar one.
Seems to be going well for them:
members: 482,168
books registered: 3,198,967
good karma: priceless - jimbosphere, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3this looks really interesting. according to their blog they literally just launched. i'll have to purge my bookshelf at home and register some used books.
- fredjoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Its a good idea, but has been around forever. http://www.titletrader.com has been doing it for over 2 years. They have a way better selection too, of books, dvds, and cds.
- lcarsdeveloper, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@davidraz, thankyou for sucking the fun out of my joke. Thankyou. Big big thankyou.
Go back to Myspace. - dougmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ummm... But really have you ever heard of a LIbrary!
- Noah0504, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2...and alas I only had 1 point now. I'm really starting to wonder about this service.
- Ostermayer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you don't ever send whatsonmybookshelf books. instead you just register them and ship if requested.
- Timjacobs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like it cool!
- treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So it's a http://www.barterbee.com , which has questionable practices, but for books?
- Noah0504, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, I registered when I first saw the digg. At that time, my initial balance was 2 points. I just checked back a few hours later and it was 50 points. I hadn't registered any books -- is this something just for the first few users?
- double_D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1although technically i think you pay for shipping, when i request a book i don't so i do get free shipping afterall
- austinparrish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is quit confusing, how do we use this!?
I keep getting points without registering books. BTW, when you register a book, does that mean you pledge it to someone in exchange for points? Such as you get 2 points and you have to send them the book? Or what!?
This is quite confusing.
And a good idea. - BladeMelbourne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have "Microsoft Windows for Workgroups & MS-DOS 6.2 Users Guide" in my desk still. I can't bring myself to get rid of it.
This story made me flip through it and I found a green certificate of authenticity in the back.
The hologram has a picture of a young boy in front of a monitor. Dugg :-) - dougmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is just like Peerflix.com and LaLa.com...
- othersomethings, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2seems like it works on the same principle as lala.com.
- paulmdx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seems like a great idea. A useful tip for adding books is to look down your Amazon past orders list to get the full titles, authors and ISBNs. s/Amazon//
- gnossis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I get all kinds of neat books...from the library. It's free too.
- DangerMouse9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Davidraz
Shouldn't it be you're welcome? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What happens if someone registers a bunch of books, requests a bunch of books, never ships any of his books, and then deregisters keeping the books he requested?
- paulmdx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes I think that's how it works. I signed up and added a couple of books. I've now got a request (which they call an order or invoice) and an address to send the book too. I assume when I send it my account gets credited.
- dtietze1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Folks in Germany should check out http://www.tauschticket.de -- been around for a long time (had its first incarnation as buchticktet.de) and works quite well.
- bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1media rate is realy cheep. you can usualy send any book for $5 or less any were in the world.
- lcarsdeveloper, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4"Your welcome *****."
And that my friend is the "Please mod me down" attitude.
At least all of your other comments here were useful. Oh wait, actually they were all useless...
"DA MOON RULES #1!!!"
Well put sir. I couldn't have said it more eloquently myself... - RareSaturn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sf-Books.com has always allowed international trades. You can even select which region you wish to trade with.
- Noah0504, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now I have 69 points after having spent 2...
- ernieoporto, on 02/02/2008, -0/+1librarything.com FTW
- EiderDuck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is nothing new. I've been using paperbackswap.com for the past year for the exact same thing.
- nethenm, on 04/01/2008, -1/+1This site looks like *****. It is just some dude's shopping cart. Man.. Just use http://www.half.com/ or something.
- RareSaturn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Been done, there are a million sites like this!!! I'm happy to say I started the first one: http://www.sf-books.com
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Book_swap - andykcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think it's the first site of this kinds I've seen that allows the overseas users to register. I wonder how the "seller" will look like when he discovers that he has to pay shipping all the way to Central Europe. Nevertheless, I hope more books will come soon.
- tksauce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
The problem with these sites is that it's a pain to have to pack and ship each book...if there was a Netflix type of envelope to simply drop into the mail, THAT would be a killer app. - lcarsdeveloper, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Well I'm sure the person who posted this is too busy crying for ruining your day by leaving out a single letter to say sorry.
So I'll apologize on his behalf...SORY - adminmatt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1davidraz.....you're on a stupid streak....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seems to me it now becomes:
1) This one can not request books without points.
2) This one can not get points unless this one sends out book to that one.
3) That one can not request books without points.
4) That one can not get points unless that one sends out a book to this one.
5) Goto 1 - dtietze1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It seems you only get the points once your book has been requested, sent and confirmed by the requester.
- austinparrish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ah, thank you.
Please choose from your address book where you would like the invoice to be sent to.
But you have to pay?
Im totally confused, but i do feel a bit better. XD - criticman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1www.paperbackswap.com has been doing this for a while. Eventually they plan on charging for membership (you can actually buy trade credits now if you lack books on your shelf starting out), but it is 100% free presently.
