- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually, you can get it for about $8 a pound, or less for bigger orders.
It's made by Dow Corning as a generic product and they sell it direct in 50 pound units, but they have a minimum order of 100 pounds. That much of the stuff will cost just under $800 or so.
To order: Call either 800-248-0248 or 800-248-2481 (not sure which) and tell the operator that you wish to purchase X pounds of "3179 Dilatent Compound", where X > 100. They'll probably transfer you to the chemicals division. Repeat your request, and order the stuff. They may accept credit cards now, but you used to have to set up a "cash in advance" account to pay for the stuff. After answering all their questions, they call you back with the exact price, including shipping and tax.
It arrives in 50 pound boxes. Simple as that. - yldave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is it just me or there a couple of alien autopsy photos on the blog? This is not silly putty, this is alien flesh....
- tacom8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1FYI i found a site to make your own homemade crap version:
1/2 cup elmers glue (white glue you used to eat back in grade school)
1/4 cup linit liquid starch (found in the laundry aisle at the store)
food colouring
mix it and *****.. dunno if it works, but then again unless you have this crap handy, why not just buy the real deal?? - vagrantradio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2All the starving kids in you know, places....and this guy wastes his money on friggen silly putty.
- silvyn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The color changing putty is much better. http://www.crayolastore.com/product_detail.asp?T1=CRA+08%2D0005%2D0%2D003
We bought about 30 pounds of this at work and split it up between all the developers. It's good to have around to fiddle with when you're waiting for a website to compile or something... - WizzleFish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's awesome.
Google should try taking over the world with that stuff. :)
Google rocks...they seriously do.... - cmykx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1250lbs of silly putty is over $3800 worth. ($76.99 for a 5lb box times 50) Must be nice to have that kind of money for something as stupid as silly putty.
- timbudtwo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How much did that all cost?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I always keep about 4 couple eggs worth at my desk, combined and stored into one egg.

- Quantic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use silly putty to hold my mouse cord down, instead of using one of those over priced mouse cord holders. I've got about 2 Lbs of silly putty sitting right here for ***** n giggles.
- redalert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0google looks like such a fun place to work

- timbudtwo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wish google would donate about 10 lbs to me. Or silvyn :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The glue mixed with sodium borate always just made slime for me. More like the Nickelodian Gak stuff than silly putty.
- Luftwaffle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It didn't cost them $3,800. They didn't order 50 five pound boxes... they bought it in bulk.
- nesdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I totally wish I had four grand lying around that I could blow on Silly Putty. Totally. So many uses... this is so dugg.
-nesdude - thejadedmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0haha that's the greatest article I've seen on digg in a very long time!

- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The problem was that once together, Silly Putty doesn't like to come apart"
- meekar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0...so...awesome
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0eigh: Be careful doing that. Silly Putty is flammable. Burns bright, and leaves a fine ash.
- Morph_Ball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0YES. Just...YES.
- xodex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that looks so distrubing XD :D but FUN!

Spending too much time banning AdSense accounts I guess - nanboya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Silly Putty is awesome stuff; I'd love to have several pounds sitting around like that...
- NeilM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0haha!!! I want some now.
- Vector713, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i swear, google is the coolest ever. where else are you gonna be able to order an eighth of a ton of silly putty, and play with it at work? **envy**
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"lol! wtf!?? That's awesome. Google rocks!"
If that was sarcasm, then I salute you for writing the funniest thing I've read all day. :)
If that was serious, that is the saddest thing I've read all day. :( - Chicken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lmfao. Good Stuff.
- dognose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well, even by the pound, it's still in bulk in comparison to the little eggs. Make it at home w/ Elmers and Borax. Other recipes are available online.
- davdav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Enjoy it while it lasts Google...
- me134, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dude. I say they need to make a big ball and drop it off the top of Google HQ and see how high in bounces!
- eigh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wait they never thought about heating up the silly putty? i have about 8 eggs worth of putty that i didnt feel like peeling out of a coffee mug, so i tossed it in the microwave. warming it up makes it much more malible. worked great.

- duger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This will be a "Michael Dukakis" (wearing ear muffs in army tank) memory for Google. First Google embraces the AOL culture, and now they dive into silly putty as harmless kids.
The myth of Google's "do no evil" with AOL can't be patched with Silly Putty. - primal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The silly puddy stumped a bunch of Google employees...
- masterdebater, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Google rocks"
Because they play with silly putty? Yeech. Does anyone have a brain anymore? Talk about your typical mindless lemming attitude. You were probably saying the same thing about $insert_big_rich_company a couple years ago. They make software thats useful, and like so many others have mentioned, they are becoming a little over valued - don't take my word for it, investors are downgrading their stock to hold because they arn't quite sure why its worth over $400US a share and still climbing. The people who got rich from the IPO have already cashed out. It feels like 1990 all over again! -
