- abbott75, on 10/12/2007, -8/+137It really was not as amazing as I was expecting...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+79you ever smoked weeed in space man?. . . . .
- allenu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+65It looks exactly how I expected it to look.
Flame. - cody50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+57more on zero gravity candle burning.

sorry for the about.com, terrible layout, but informative nonetheless - kevinmotel, on 10/12/2007, -12/+59boobies. sagging issues
- abbott75, on 10/12/2007, -12/+46Sagging tends to be CAUSED by gravity...
- Bara, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35I was hoping for a video at least... the picture looks cool, but only for a few seconds... a video would have kept me interested for at least a minute.
- darkstar949, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25For those that are interested - here's a link to one of the pictures of the space detonation - http://www.vce.com/balloonetc.html#anchor_outerspace
- rcran, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25Seeing this makes me think 'What else does gravity make ugly?"...
- rcran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23I have seen a photo of such a thing... it looks like a perfect sphere. Humans have detenated several atomic bombs in space... Not many people know that...
Check out the movie 'Trinity and beyond'. Really great documentation of the whole nuclear era. There is one shot where a nuclear blast hits a school bus during testing and you can see all the paint just float of it, right before it falls over... Amazing stuff... Anyway there is video of space blasts in that doc... - kevinmotel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23"Now that you ask, Lois, I find this meatloaf rather shallow and pedantic" - Peter Griffin
- roqua, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23awesome... now I want to see a nuke 'shrume in microgravity
- achoo5000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22^^
I dunno about that, gravity isn't really what "moves" candles anyway, it's more the air currents in the room. (or space-room!) - wabbiteh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19It burns very slowly, and very cool. Diffusion of oxygen and carbon dioxide is enough to keep it going. (From the about.com article that cody50 linked to).
- Anpheus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18You mean, in higher-orbit free fall.
Because if you're looking for a no-gravity environment, you'll not find it here. Or anywhere close to here. In fact, expect to have to go to a different dimension.
"Microgravity" is a term used for when an object is in free fall, and thus the weight of an object is significantly reduced. - Steel_Blue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14One can never acheive true zero gravity. Micro gravity is what is referred to when you are in orbit around earth, closest you'll get to zero gravity. (Oh and there's basically no difference).
- StarManta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Microgravity is smart-people talk for what most people refer to as "zero gravity"... that is, in orbit (or any other free fall).
- GuyHersh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Hmm.. if you look at viktoria565's profile, you see she commented that spam link to 4 different diggs at the exact sime time!
Does Digg have a spambot??! - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Yeah the US tested in space a couple times.. and then decided it was a horrible idea for reasons such as it caused electromagnetic pulses that knocked out the power in major cities.. and they realized it would not only knock out the Russian satellites (like they intended) but also the American ones as well.
- pexor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Wow... ask and ye shall receive.
- cds0528, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16wow, that has 1000+ diggs. sounds like about 1000 people dugg it without looking at the picture *yawns*
- el_jefe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Why is this "tech industry news"? Science would be a better choice.
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Mark the story was "Wrong Topic" then.
- Tynan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I can't really RTFA... it's just an image.
- brotherfranciz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@ achoo5000: but there probably still isn't much wind in Zero-G conditions. Wind occurs when hot air rises and cold air rushes in to fill in the space, so in Zero-G conditions, cold and hot air don't have weight thus no movement.
- achoo5000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6if you talk to my buddy einstein, he'll tell you that microgravity (free fall) is the same as zero gravity.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equivalence_Principle#The_strong_equivalence_principle - skidooer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"I'd like to see the effect in absolute zero gravity."
At very least, the candle is going to exert an gravitational force, albeit extremely small. It's kind of hard to remove the candle from the equation to achieve zero gravity. - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6*The More You Know jingle*
- weiran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's not zero gravity, it's just in constant freefall so it's experiencing zero gravity.
Gravity is everywhere, even in space... - GuyHersh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4umm... what?
- richiestang78, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Cool pic but Ive seen it before and a few others. Also submit in the right section next time.
- halosniper7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@rogua
WOW! you got my brain working. i really want to see that! - SpikeX, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10There's probably no video because there's nothing to see. It wouldn't move that much in Zero-G.
- mxfreak92, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3ya its just a picture but as they said above theres no gravity and no air currents.... so its basicly a movie cuz nothing would change
- otrtr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Zero gravity only exists in theory and mathematics. In the real world all matters exerts a gravitional pull on ererything else around. Wherever there is matter, there is gravity. Even two atoms exchang gravitional forces with each other. In this case. the candle, the air and the vehicle containing the experiment forms a system of gravitional field, although very small and negligible.
Until technonlgy come up with a way to neutralize gravity (very unlikely), zero gravity in the presence of matters is impossible. That is why "micro-gravity" is always used instead of "zero gravity" in describing experiments. - antdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Video would be nicer.
- napinsa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Speaking of nuclear explosions in space, also see:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starfish_Prime - Tynan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Does it periodically go out and re-light? If not, what brings in new oxygen if there is no convection?
- Stuntaneous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2outside the box as they say. ten points.. and a digg
- Forma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Poor quality movie can be found at http://exploration.grc.nasa.gov/combustion/web/vid_cfm.htm
NASA has a slow connection though. - potatoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wish there was more than just a picture, I guess I'll follow some of the other links for more info. I dont know why people bother digging just an image. I figure you'd want some substance besides a "pretty picture"
- billymachine, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Enjoy: http://duggmirror.com/tech_news/What_Does_A_Candle_Flame_Look_Like_In_Zero_Gravity/candle_microgravity_lg.jpg
- eXus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Are you serious? You do realize that to have flame from a candle you need oxygen and a vacuum = no oxygen, right?
- DubbleA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Videos? You got it:
http://microgravity.grc.nasa.gov/combustion/web/video_collection.htm - silicon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1looks sort of like a blue led
- dag68, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought "Love is Everywhere". Now gravity is jumping on the bandwagon?
- ray901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1and some more
http://microgravity.grc.nasa.gov/combustion/cfm/cfm_index.htm - achoo5000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Magicnatism
- Cyberdactyl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually a zero g candle would not burn long as there is no way for the burnt gases to be replaced as under gravity with convection.
- Grig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What did they do with the released Phantom Zone criminals?
