- thingamajig765, on 12/27/2008, -9/+209I have unlimited messages and it's probably a good thing... I go through 3000 - 4000 text messages a month. I do think it's insanity that text messages have gone from 5 cents a message to 20!
- cmsjustin, on 12/27/2008, -7/+193That's why I wish all of my friends used email
- networkingisfun, on 12/28/2008, -1/+168Unlimited texting + teenage females = nightmare.
They are the reason I had no choice to upgrade to unlimited texting, up from my more economic plan I was perfectly content with. - Kahnza, on 12/28/2008, -10/+177What the hell are you doing that you are sending over 100 texts a day?
- codyman, on 12/28/2008, -1/+141this is why I switched to carrier pigeon.. best carrier around I tell you
- ExRe, on 12/28/2008, -0/+125They are just realizing this now?
Phone companies have been ripping customers off ever since they've been able to monopolize an area (which has been since forever, and "competition" in the area doesn't bring lower prices anyways because they fix their prices). - mitch37, on 12/28/2008, -4/+121I have always thought of it this way, I might be wrong, but here it is:
I get 1GB of internet usage per month for $20. I can send a ~500 byte text message for $0.10.
If I was to send 1GB worth of text messages, i would be looking at a $200,000 bill. (2 million messages)
Now sure, text messages might cost a little more because they then have to be sent to the recipients phone, but come on, $20 verses $200,000. Something is wrong there. - Idrive, on 12/28/2008, -0/+114Why doesn't one carrier take this opportunity to sway people to their company by offering much cheaper text packages than the others...clearly they can afford to do so.
- natpatben, on 12/27/2008, -1/+103After reading that, I feel cheated. :(
- 0260, on 12/28/2008, -1/+99I barely used SMS before I had a girlfriend.
- akchrs, on 12/28/2008, -15/+112"You should be WORKING at work."
what planet are you from. - Chompy, on 12/28/2008, -0/+94I'd never sent a text in my life until I moved to Korea; it's ridiculous here.
Oh and unlimited texts, free incoming everything, and thousands of minutes = $15/month here. And my phone has TV. - canreacchio, on 12/28/2008, -2/+94Actually its 325,962.9 GIGABYTES... you forgot to divide by another 1024.... its actually around 318 Terabytes!
- scratend0788, on 12/28/2008, -1/+85its about how much you are willing to pay, not how much its worth. and you know these companies are probably pretending to be competitive publically and sucking eachother off in private.
- Murdats, on 12/28/2008, -0/+77text messages cost customers more to send then it costs nasa to send data to mars
- dzneill, on 12/27/2008, -3/+79That's why I switched all my text alerts to e-mail alerts.
- bob_the_alien, on 12/28/2008, -4/+71I've Done this before as well, when your sitting and work and don't want to actually be talking on the phone, it's easy to send over a 100 txts a day.
- Psygnosis, on 12/28/2008, -1/+67Someone actually figured it out that with what the carriers charge it's more expensive to receive data via text message then it is to get it from the Hubble telescope.
http://www.physorg.com/news129793047.html - akchrs, on 12/28/2008, -16/+81you must be fun at party's
- needmorechange, on 12/28/2008, -1/+65Cell phone companies are like the South American druglords of data. There is no, I mean absolutely no, way that 160 characters of bandwidth should even cost a nickel, much less 20 cents.
- WhatPeriod, on 12/28/2008, -0/+61He could be the father of teenage females.
- sabster, on 12/28/2008, -2/+60the basic summary of the article is that no matter how many messages are sent, the carriers always pay the same amount for all the texts... so its in the company's interest to sell the the most profitable packages (unlimited).
- Paulish, on 12/28/2008, -2/+60http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/8421/bffjill144 ...
- JigoroKano, on 12/28/2008, -1/+55Because then the other companies will do the same. Price fixing assures them all more money.
- Bloake, on 12/28/2008, -1/+50Wireless carriers cheating the consumers...what else is new?
- S2000, on 12/28/2008, -1/+47"The public assumes that the wireless carriers ’ costs are far higher than they actually are"
What group of ***** retards did they survey to come to this conclusion? My assumption of a carrier's cost to send a text is between damn near nothing and jack *****. - inactive, on 12/28/2008, -1/+44Sounds like he has one, I wish I had friends to text : (
- jakereilly, on 12/28/2008, -3/+41Because there is most likely a better coffee shop down the street. There are 4 mobile carriers who collude/price fix.
/common sense - Ajajadude, on 12/28/2008, -1/+39Unless this person is a father...or just a pedophile.
- inactive, on 12/28/2008, -2/+39I'm sure getting our politicians involved will fix everything, just look at their track record!
- unusualbob, on 12/28/2008, -0/+37 i forgot kilobytes
i went from bytes to megabytes.
***** and i knew i would do some ***** like that too and someone like you would correct me. - dstruktNine, on 12/28/2008, -0/+36you suck at teh english
- BradOFarrell, on 12/28/2008, -6/+41thanks, MOM.
- chemaj, on 12/28/2008, -0/+35He could be *gasp* a teenage male.
- Ajajadude, on 12/28/2008, -3/+37It also includes receiving text messages...I think, I stopped paying attention once I got an unlimited plan over a year ago.
- w3ber, on 12/28/2008, -0/+330.2$ ..... 140 bytes
X ...... 4Gb (536 870 912bytes ) (HD pr0n)
---------------------------------
X=536 870 912*0.2/140=766 958.446$
wow.
So they charge 766 958$ for 4Gb of data! WOW - spynes, on 12/28/2008, -0/+31or he stole them.
- impei, on 12/28/2008, -0/+31Which is an average of only 88Mbps which a single 10/100 router could probably handle.
- mrsteveman1, on 12/28/2008, -1/+28How many lines do you send back and forth when you use IM services? It's very similar
- swiftekho, on 12/28/2008, -1/+27Mine was hit by a car driven by some ***** who was texting while driving.
- theguesser10, on 12/28/2008, -1/+26I always thought that even $5 a month was too much for texting. It should be included in plans for free. Seeing as how it works, would it be possible to use a third party program to send and receive texts? Google phone anyone?
- acmethunder, on 12/28/2008, -0/+24Free market ideas ideas don't exist when there is no free market.
- TSK05, on 12/28/2008, -0/+23You got one dumb ass girlfriend then. "Omg, numbers! Run for the hills!!!!!11!!"
- babaganush, on 12/28/2008, -1/+24It's not a cartel. The Cell Phone Carrier Industry is just an Oligopoly.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherman_Antitrust_Act
Now, that's not to say that it's definitely not a Cartel because the government is corrupt. However, as far as I'm aware, these Cell Phone carriers are in intense competition. There are no discussions between ATT and Verizon on matters of price. They are not fixing the price per say, but it's more a matter of price leadership. If it were a Cartel, we would all be paying a static price consistent across all carriers. OPEC is a cartel in its truest form. - tech42er, on 12/28/2008, -0/+22Because they're a cartel.
- inactive, on 12/28/2008, -2/+2335 cents in Australia. Thanx Telstra, pricks~
- blackb0x, on 12/28/2008, -0/+21you can also make your own coffee, and last time i made my own phone, the battery kept exploding.
- krazytom, on 12/28/2008, -0/+21This is not a mundane detail Michael!
