- Evolutuon, on 03/29/2009, -1/+171I don't care if its the apocalypse, I'm never going back to 56k.
- fr0mundacheese, on 03/29/2009, -2/+120I'll cut back to 5 meals a day before I "Dial-up"
- sockpuppets, on 03/28/2009, -1/+100Ding. Ding. Scrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeetttccchhhhhhhhh
- Kryptenx, on 03/28/2009, -0/+58"But executives from United Online, which owns dial-up providers NetZero and Juno, said they saw the percentage of people dropping the company's Internet service hit a new low of 4.3 percent during the fourth quarter of 2008."
In other words, some people are going back to dial-up, yet not enough to offset the people ditching dial-up. - ileftfark, on 03/29/2009, -1/+58I think I still have 30,000 'free' hours of dial-up if anyone's interested. I can show you how to install Bonzi Buddy!
- Yout, on 03/29/2009, -1/+53I'll suffer a diet of ramen noodles and tap water before giving up broadband.
- DrunkenSavior, on 03/29/2009, -1/+50WHO PICKED UP THE PHONE!? >=(
- inactive, on 03/28/2009, -3/+46I myself downgraded from cable to DSL to save a little on my Internet bill, but *shudder* I could never go back to dial-up. Actually, come to think of it, I really couldn't because I don't have a land line.
- protonone, on 03/29/2009, -3/+42You can't put a price on fast loading porn.
- benbrooks101, on 03/29/2009, -0/+37Digg does not and never has taken 25-30 seconds to load on a broadband connection.
If it ever did for you, I suggest getting yourself a better ISP. - Spamcan, on 03/29/2009, -0/+34Ditch the phone line and cable television, use your cell and watch shows online. People who are going back to dial up probably aren't the most savvy surfers otherwise they'd know better.
- TechnoRabbit, on 03/29/2009, -0/+29You can get DSL now without having a phone line. There are still phone lines going to your house but no phone service.
- Lionhart, on 03/29/2009, -0/+27New $9.95 dialup service plans? They've been offering that for literally years.
- RoboRay, on 03/29/2009, -0/+27I'll just piggy-back off my neighbor's unsecured wireless router.
- inactive, on 03/29/2009, -0/+26I noticed yesterday that the call of a red wing blackbird sounds a bit like a modem. Ahh, spring!

- Tyrghast, on 03/29/2009, -1/+19I have a house built entirely out of AOL trial cd's.
- fandyllic, on 03/29/2009, -8/+24Buried for "welp".
- Protoss, on 03/29/2009, -0/+16Some ISPs still offer 19.95 for dial-up. It's robbery.
- thebeginning, on 03/29/2009, -1/+16I'll sell so much of my stuff before switching back to dial-up.
- inactive, on 03/29/2009, -0/+14he takes the dogsled to work
- xsecretfiles, on 03/29/2009, -0/+13Do they have wireless internet there or what?
- sulf, on 03/29/2009, -0/+12$9.95 for a dial-up plan? That's a rip-off. VTISP offers dial-up for $3.95.
- Sparker1981, on 03/29/2009, -0/+12I'm sadly old, I can remember when dial-up internet was the coolest most advanced thing, this being back in 1996 of course. These days, better than nothing, just keep a novel handy to read as pages load up.
- unclejimbo88, on 03/29/2009, -0/+12I'd give up my computer before I go back to dial-up....
- inactive, on 03/29/2009, -1/+13Ouch, 25-30 seconds? Your broadband sucks, man - though to be fair, digg is kinda slow no matter what your speed. But come on, streaming video and the like is a big deal these days. For me, Youtube/Hulu/South Park Studios/Adult Swim make up a decent portion of what I use my connection for, especially since I don't have cable, and it'd be hard for me to give all that up.
- TwwIX, on 03/29/2009, -1/+13Dial up is the telegraph of internet connections. By using it, i'd be doing a disservice to mankind by halting its technological progression.
If you are that desperate, "borrow" your neighbors wi-fi connection. - DarkShroud, on 03/29/2009, -0/+11Yes, it's called Rogers. Rogers is probably the worst ISP in North America.
- NUMBER4940, on 03/29/2009, -0/+11Oh, wow. That took me back. Thank you. XD.
- inactive, on 03/29/2009, -0/+11If only websites were 56k friendly.
- aspec, on 03/29/2009, -0/+11But what's the real cost? Now you have a landline that you can't use if you're connected all the time. I think you'd be better off with cheap dsl and skype.
- Legoman513, on 03/29/2009, -0/+11That's 50 dkp minus.
- inactive, on 03/29/2009, -1/+12Same convictions, I visited my ancient grandfather a few months ago, he had assured me he had an internet connection. When I realized the horrible truth, it was already too late.
Worst week of my life. Sorry, gramps. - bob_the_alien, on 03/29/2009, -2/+13my cable will go before I'll go back to dial up
- linagee, on 03/29/2009, -0/+11@BaconOclock: I think they make a cream for that.
- BaphClass, on 03/29/2009, -0/+11< On a 56k connection right now. This is what happens when you live in rural Canada.
- MrColdheart, on 03/29/2009, -1/+11ewwww dial-up
If I ever had to get rid of my high speed I would just spend more time at the bar - ShelleighOo, on 03/29/2009, -1/+11just steal from your neighbors
- aspec, on 03/29/2009, -1/+10What the ***** does that have to do with dial up internet access?
- inactive, on 03/29/2009, -2/+11I live in the middle of nowhere and just got DSL speeds via long range WiFi...never ever going back to dial up
- docbob84, on 03/29/2009, -0/+8You must be one of those "people". Good luck with the 20th century, I hear there's some tough spots in the middle and you might lose some money towards the end. The rest of us will be plugged in and online. Cheers.
- iceman0113, on 03/29/2009, -2/+10I guess people can use dial up if all they needed it for was for checking emails and such, but for stocks and anything that needs to be done in real time, cable is still king, until FiOS hits my neighborhood...
- regression, on 03/29/2009, -0/+8Bonzi Buddy? You're one of those hackers aren't you.
- Krekko, on 03/29/2009, -0/+8Like other people have said, I aint goin' back to dial up. No way no how.
I much rather not use the internet at home then be frustrated and wanna break things because a simple page takes 5 minutes to load, only to have to proceed to another page.
But this really hits home. I have also seen lots of my friends with less and less cellphones, or going to pre-paid phones. Gotta start personal responsibility somewhere! - nmanguy, on 03/29/2009, -0/+8Doesn't ATT by law have a $10 700 Kb/s service?
- newsboys, on 03/29/2009, -0/+8@strict - 250GB cap is amazing, considering the best package you can get in Canada with any major ISP is 95GB/month.
- Valyn, on 03/29/2009, -1/+9I was forced to Dialup a couple years ago when I got stationed on MCAS Miramar (San Diego). Yea thats right, up until 2004(?) on base in the middle San Diego had nothing buy dialup. It sucked ass.
Like the article said, other things go before broadband. Hell I'd drop not only my land line, but also my cell phone before internet. ***** cable, I wasn't even paying for that before the recession. - BaconOclock, on 03/29/2009, -1/+9It's called a dry loop.
- thefox84, on 03/29/2009, -0/+8Or you could dump the phones, dump the tv, and make the sacrifice of watching tv online. The internet will be the last thing to go for me...
- linagee, on 03/29/2009, -0/+7Foreclosed!
