- scratched, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's scary that universities are promoting "web 2.0" so much. It's just a buzzword but my e-commerce professor acts like it is actually a new version of the web, as if at one point the web went from a version 1.0 to version 2.0
Technology is just improving, no "new" version of the web was released. Browsers just started supporting better versions of javascript and servers started installing newer versions of PHP, Perl, and ASP along with databases. I cringe when I hear the word "Web 2.0" - csandb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I agree with dmolsen. Web2.0 is just a word used to distinguish differences that exist on the web form the past, and it's the buzzword that is here to stay whether you like it or not.
- dmolsen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What I think it is is that some people (say your prof) used to see the web in one way. They got up one morning, read an article about web 2.0 and now see it a completely different way. While technology hasn't changed really it's that some people are now wrapping their heads around a different view of the web (e.g. talking at vs. listening/talking with). To define that shift they've latched onto the buzzword. To me it makes complete sense to do so. For them the shift is pretty dramatic.

to actually being able to see real time - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Web 2.0 even has a new mascot:

As an instructional designer and online instructor, I can say that facilitating online course work is more dynamic with the evolving toolset of the web. Many are labeling this evolution "web 2.0" and I am fine with that because it enables people to make new connections to prior knowledge, and as dmolser said so well, "wrap their heads around a different view of the web". Keep checking out my blog if your interested in the evolving landscape of education and technology.
