- MrBlue999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12WSJ *AND* CNBC are both quoting TechCrunch. TechCrunch then makes another post saying WSJ and CNBC picked up the story so it must be gaining steam!
Welcome to Circle Jerk 2.0. - Feanor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9WTF is Google?
- dattaway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Good business strategy to buy your competition. Its worked for Microsoft. Its all about One Big Company to rule them all. Consumers no longer have to make a choice. One website to go to every day. One company to work for. One government.
- btgoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6GoogleTube sounds dirty....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The funny thing that although this story is the top headline on CNN, ABC, NBC, and CBS's websites, it doesnt show up at the top of digg.
Why? There are currently over 75 submissions of this same story, each only getting one or two diggs. People are STILL submitting this story over and over. So much so, that no single post can get enough diggs to stay near the top.
Interesting weakness in the digg algorithm- if a story is REALLY popular, it can't make it to the front page! - ZeonZumDeikun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5New nerd pick up line:
"Hey baby, let me stick my GoogleTube in your MySpace" - fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Wow. The two biggest copyright infringers online joining forces in an unholy acquisition....the lawyers will have a field day with GooTube.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Why would Google buy a never-heard-of startup?
- sjalloul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3YouTube, GDrive....why not? Makes alot of sense! And a clever name like GTube, priceless!
- fletchowns, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Atleast they won't have to pay for bandwidth when they supply high speed internet to everybody in the country with all that dark fiber they're buying up. And free countery wide wifi in every city for when you're not at your desk. In 10 years you're going to see a google logo next to your login screen after you boot up your computer...
- SuckMyDigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2...neat. YouTube is nice and all being as how millions of people form little social cults and all that... but I really don't care. I think I'd cringe a bit if Microsoft were thinking of swallowing them, just for the couple months of backlash that would surely ensue. Google can buy them and you know it's not going to be any worse off...
- ZeonZumDeikun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2But why not just take their property and improve upon it with their own, therefore having the largest video aggregator?
- shawnlane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I agree with you. I don't understand why anyone would want to buy YouTube. That seems crazy to me.
- warox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hasn't google indicated they want to go into video advertisements? Sounds like this might be a good launching platform for that idea. Free youtube videos for the public, and Goog gets paid for chunk of adspace added before the video. Content owners get a slice of the pay plus, marketing info on their videos. Seems like a plausible business model.
- interiot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Man, Google colos are going to be like McDonald's soon... they'll dot the landscape. Well, Google certainly is well-positioned to make the most money off of advertising, and to minimize infrastructure and bandwidth costs too.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1SueTube is more like it...most of what I watch are copyrighted works used without permission (music videos) The other user-generated trash I don`t really care for. I know as much as I like YouTube for free videos , they will be sued into oblivion. They are the Napster of video. I stayed up many sleepless nights downloading all my faves before they went under. Now I am doing the same with Video Downloader and YouTube. It`s a free-for-all so get it while it lasts ! Mark Cuban is right...they are just a few lawsuits away fom a Napster-like demise.
- PacoBell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wait, why is this in Tech Deals o_O?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2sell GOOG now
- bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If I was running YouTube I wouldn't sell. They appear to be primed to be kings of the ***** internet and they have barely been around for more than a year. 8 years ago Google was nothing. Why would YouTube sell now?
- Soldan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1youtube is popular because you can post illegal ***** that is all...its 90% hype..... go for the short term... Dailymotion is better and is the same damn thing....but they have hosted porn as well ...
youtube is the new napster...looks good for a little while..
as far as it being popular at schools.... no wonder kids cant pass their standardized tests.. - DanZen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's a poll we did where you get to predict if people will think it is a good idea for Google and then also vote at the same time: http://www.tapoll.com/poll/id/594706440
- drathan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very interesting. I hope Google would adopt the community aspect of YouTube. On the social side, Google Video just feels cold. On the other hand, YouTube could benefit from Google's approach to copyright and flagging, so in a twisted way, the below becomes true:
http://digg.com/tech_news/How_to_Fix_YouTube_s_Two_Greatest_Problems - bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think saying YouTube is based on copywrite infringement is a gross midunderstanding of the whole of the content that they have on their site.
- thegreyfox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did i miss something? When did Google ever buy a company that only added eyeballs and not technology?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1“40% partially true.”
60% of the time, it works every time... - ortel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1did i miss something? since when has the wsj ever been a trustable source?
- kgool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1eyeballs = $. It is a pretty simple equation. Technology has never been the answer. Some companies just have a certain "something" and YT definetly has it.
There are a lot of prognosticators on digg who must have slept at a Holiday Inn Express last night, because YouTube might just be able to get around all the entertainment company's lawyers.
They have something the big media companies need, an audience. People aren't going to the movies, aren't buying CD's, and are not turing on the TV. They are on YouTube and more jump on board every day. - razei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Youtube is just as popular as MySpace at my school.
- tastypastry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google is the only company I can picture buying YouTube.
And if YouTube is to be bought, I can see every video that is uploaded screened by moderators for copyright infrigment. - jonconley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Lets hope it is the same guy that informed both, and he just has a large mouth. YouTube is horrible. It is the MySpace of video. This would be the worst move I can remember Google making. Especially considering the amount of money they are talking.
Don't buy this junk. Spend a fraction of that money on actually developing a better solution, site, delivery, and compression technology
Hell, after you remove the illegal content, its still a mess and has a lot less content. - ceoandpresident, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Maybe they can merge it with blogspot, and call it Gspot?

You mean like Napster was primed to be king of the ***** internet?
sorry dude, businesses based on widescale copyright fraud last until the second they start making money and become a deep pocket target for lawsuits. then the lawyers swoop in to pick over the corpse. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The rumor has already done the job it was intended to do- Google's stock is trading at 421 a share, up about 21 points from where it was just two days ago.
- SeanCK, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Mr.Blue999, you are f*ing brilliant. Thanks for taking the time to follow the links and read the articles. Sadly, most digg users make the decision whether or not to digg articles based on the headline alone.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Let's just hope they don't buy Digg!
