- gregmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10ill just stick to using my cell phone at home
- Psykus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Wow, the Mac zealots are out in full force today. He's not trying to flame Macs at all, he's just stating a simple fact. Windows machines have more market share, therefore, there's a higher priority to get support on Windows first, and then Mac later on. Makes perfect sense, and no reason to mod him down for.
- rossbrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I don't think I want a leaking phone.
- Math-Sux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The image just looks like some cheap trade show give away samples (cheap promo crap)...
- Cronus6, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10@ idean360:
It's 5% TOTAL market share (ok ok, it's not *really* 5% it's 4.33%).
Now lets consider that you are Vonage for a moment and you realize that you will only be getting a small percentage of "total" users as customers. Even if you got half, a rather large number, of Mac users to use your product that's still only 2+% of the *total* market.
Hell, it's not even worth paying your employees to develop a Mac version, your just losing money, not to mention the problems of dealing with two platforms for tech support (one of those two platforms being historically whiny and not very hardware savvy).
I've always said that at 5% of the market share Mac's only deserve versions of 5% of all software and peripherals to be made for it.

- TKDWILSON, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"""Why??
Lets say I have Vonage at home.....if I want to keep my phone I have to hawl the regular Vonage box around. Lets say I go on vaction or to someone elses house...I can plug this guy in and have my home phone.""""
That is such a cool idea. What would be better is if it didn't need an internet connection. It could be this phone you carry around and can make phone calls from it. Maybe they can even develop it so I can send text messages to other things like this. It would be so mobile.
Eric Wilson - mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah I think we need a real phone in our hands and not these earplugs and mic...
FYI, Vonage just enabled all customers to call UK, Ireland, France, Spain and Italy for free. Best thing they've ever done. My girlfriend lives in England so I had a virtual number installed so she could call me at any time. Now, I can call her whenever I want! =) - elShaggy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've seen skype's offering like this at Radio Shack, it comes in a small foil bag, and looks almost identical and same cheap quality.
- stomicron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's not a generic term. While PC does stand for "personal computer" and Macs can be thought of as personal computers, the term most commonly refers to machines that have derived from the original "IBM PC" which was introduced in 1981 and a TRADEMARKED term. It then gave rise to the hardware platform "PC-compatible" and from then on hardware derived from that platform came to be known as "PC clones" and now "PCs."
So while PC denotes the phrase "personal computer," its connotation is something everyone knows about and understands, regardless of which OS they support. - jake0713, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I have been beta testing this device for about three weeks now. I do have to say that I get a lot of interest when I show it to people. It is a cool concept and the device works. However, I do not really have a need for it because I have a SIP softphone on my laptop and on my cell phone.
This is one of those things that I do not see getting very big because the coolness factor goes away after about two days. The sound quality is average and the reason is the poor headset.
I just wish Vonage would offer BYOD accounts instead of trying to deliver these products. - Acill, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4How hard can it be to add Mac suport? I know were in much lower numbers then Windows user, but come on. We do like to use these types of things too!
- BrainiakZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I got vonage,,, hooked up like 6 of my friends.. and got like 6 months free for doing it. I love my vonage service. I pay for nearly unlimited cell + Internet service via Verizon, but I still would rather use my home phone.
Anyhow... Vonage is a great service. If you need to have a house phone, I highly recommend using that.
As for their house phone thing-a-ma jigger, umm.. I guess that would be cool if I had my laptop while I was out of the country. It would be much cheaper then using my cell phone.
Another cool thing about Vonage is you can add other area codes and phone numbers to your single line. So if you have family in 6 states, you can give them each a local number. you can even move (like I did), and take all your phone numbers with you. I can call Canada (not that I know anyone there), and some other places. Their international rates are really good too (better then att from what my mom said when came over to use it to call France).
Anyhow, for those that have not used it, its worth a try. If you need a house phone, screw paying $50 to your local phone company for their premium package (which wont include a lot of long distance). Just get a cable modem, and vonage and you will be very pleased.
Anyhow.. I'm done ranting about it. I'm very happy with my vonage... but I wont be buying into their soft-phone.. those are retarded for how much they want monthly. (9.99 more a month last I checked). - mojofrojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been on vonage for bought 2 years now and I got to say its probably the best phone plan going out there. I like the idea that I can bring my home phone with me when I go to a friends house or if I go out with my laptop and not have to worry about missed calls. Hopefully its a one-time payment for the device and you don't have to keep paying for the soft-phone.
- xunil2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Vonage-to-Vonage calls *are* free. And I'll withhold judgment on this one until I find it whether it is a hoax or not.
- Woknblues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well, "free" means not paying anything, last I heard, vonage has a monthly fee...
- Stopher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That is pretty cool. I've been on Packet8 for a while b/c it's cheaper but their feature set kinda sucks compared to Vonage. You can't check your voicemail online. They will email you a .wav of it but I hear Vonage has a nice web interface. I'd realy dig beingi able to use my pc to make calls.
- bryanl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is this really a leak considering they are IPO'ing this month? The SoftPhone looks cool, but I think they may be trying to generate press without actually generating press.
- Woknblues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Fry's Electonics had one that I saw about 18 months ago, for skype.. This is pretty old and lame...
here is another company that has been doing this for a while, too..

Vonage to me is for the business consumer of VoIP. Until they are free like Skype (skype to skype), I'm out. - rjg1021, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You darn Luddite!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luddites - bradleyland, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't understand how this is better than a software softphone and a bluetooth headset.
- Kelmon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2This is what gets me. The Mac is dead easy to program for and has an increasing share of the market area that this kind of product is aimed at (certainly enough to be more than insignificant). This market share rubbish is really starting to annoy since everyone knows that the majority of computers are in the business sector and this product is aimed at consumers who aren't in a locked-down environment where non-approved VoIP products won't work, Windows or not.
- christophersisk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Remember a while back when someone re-wired an old telephone to plug into his sound card? That's what they need to push. The USB key to store the software and account for traveling is nice. But who like using little earbuds and tiny microphones. Gimme a real phone headset and we're in business.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"no Mac support, apparently", I draw your attention to the word aparently.. It may well be that there is full Mac support, either in the first release, or a later updated version..
- Ben - jawngee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i have vonage soft phone (the regular thing, not this particular one). It saved my ass in Tokyo. I could make and receive calls from my laptop to clients in the states. This would be even better because I could go into any cafe and make a few calls if travelling abroad.
- DrZowie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I see a couple of comments about "mac zealots", but please remember that digitalgopher got it wrong -- "PC" is a generic term meaning "Personal Computer". The macintosh is a PC, so it is wrong to say "You plug it into any PC—no Mac support, apparently...". Correct usage would be "You plug it into any PC -- no Cray support, apparently..." or something similar.
While I'm ranting, "You plug it into any Windows machine" would be wrong too, since Vonage does not support X-Windows or VMS TextWindows or any of the other Windows systems out there. - rotten777, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1If this were 100% crossplatform with no hitch it would be an awesome idea. I don't see it in it's current form doing too much business.
Neat idea but it could have been a killer one if it was Mac/Linux/Windows compatible. - SouthernDigger, on 10/12/2007, -14/+10why? if you have to USB your home phone... it isnt as great as vonage could be. why plug into a computer that already has wi-fi and skype if you have to pay for a service that gives you the same functionality as all other VOIP programs or even your cell phone? no MAC support? They can do a lot better!
- Alphateam, on 10/12/2007, -22/+13Why??
Lets say I have Vonage at home.....if I want to keep my phone I have to hawl the regular Vonage box around. Lets say I go on vaction or to someone elses house...I can plug this guy in and have my home phone.
Yes and no Mac support.....lets see...I can see the meeting on this. "Hey boss, great idea on the USB key thinggy...I know Windows has 90% of the market and the Mac like 5%...so lets get the Mac side all working and get Windows when we get to it. Oh by the way can I have a raise for that GREAT idea?" So yes I'm sure they will get to it, but..... - idean360, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3hey dumbass, that 5% is if you count all the business computers as well, for home users its a lot higher....
